@JuggernaughtBro .... actually we (well i`m) gonna see whats going on. i can remember ever posting this... seriously... i`ve been switching computers....etc.
Today's concerts are so loud that when they do the guitar solos to show off their talent for 20 minutes during hte song it's not even fun to lsiten to cause it burns your eardrums and then they ruin the song b y making hte guitar solo so long, but if the guitar solos were like this I wouldn't mind so much.. THAT'S talent.
Darrin Vincent is the archtop guitar player, which now has his own band formed with a buddy of his, called Dailey and Vincent. you should look them up they're really good.
@1253mv Wonder Bread Lite, no whole grain. When Tony, on stage, tells you (where an audience can hear it, just off mike) "you're playing too fast", then that is a clue. No tone, plenty of timing and a mechanized sense of taste and too many notes. But, highly accurate and technically proficient. Suzuki method.
great version - if you compare to Ralph Stanley, it's faster and the verse lines not so prolonged; but that allows the great musicians to show off their craft. Incredicle...
@MisterSchlomah Coldy Kilby is a great guitar and when it gets to this level its all in what the listener likes. I prefer Bryan sutton and clay hess over Cody Kilby but thats just me. Either way they are all 3 awesome
He didn't. "Little Maggie" is actually a traditional song. There's bootleg recordings of the song done by Monroe on the Opry with Lester and Earl that are prior to Stanley's version.
Ralph is the one who popularized the song "Little Maggie", basically made it a song of his own, I'm sure that's what Ricky meant.
Way to go Ricky, he was picking that when he was 6, then and now. How about playing us something we haven't heard a billion times. Hot pickers only do so much.
Great Video and Song... I was raised up on all these old songs, and singers such as Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley , Stanley Bro's, Jimmy Martin,,etc......
I've worked in the Ky coalmines for quite some time now,,, and listening to all these old songs and hymns on the way to work kinda gave me the drive' to push on and work hard each day, Whether it was a good or bad day...
DoLittleMccoy: And dont think everyone forgets what you do for us all.. Many remember and know what that man does going down in the hole for a days pay. There are some that have a lot of respect for you. Great comment and you are very right this music does push you just a bit harder dont it.
@sclawman Kilby is a musical prodigy. He hears it, and then plays it. Phenomenal and with taste. Key is what is the tones chosen, neck position and structure. Lot's of pickers can play fast, and they will stay employed in that sense.
You have to be kidding me! It just smokes! What do you want, quarter notes? He definitely is around the melody even though he's not strictly following it. A killer solo. Plus it's at like 160 bpm so that's impressive as is.
are you kidding me it was all melody.you obviously know nothing about music. he is the single best guitarist in the world and could out pick anyone you could come up with.
Well there was NO melody at all other than the notes fell into the same chord pattern lol! He is one of the best but not on melodic bluegrass songs. Someone like David Grier and/or Tim Stafford is much more inventive, creative and tasteful than that. Even Rice is more inventive at working around a melody. Sometimes you can play TOO much. Ever heard of less is more?
Actually there was all melody on this... Up the neck break for banjo was just like that of scruggs, down the neck closer to Stanleys. They even added the D position chord after the F. Not many bands do that during the breaks, ;)
Sweet! I suppose that if you're a pro musician you might find room to criticize; but this lot (by my Kentucky simpleton reckoning)are simply up there with the best. Thanks for sharing a great vid. Now if someone could just get them playing Wheel Hoss on here.....
I thought his solo sucked. No melody at all. Just note after note. Not very mature or inventive for bluegrass solos. I think he is alot more mature and has settled down a lot since his wild days back then.
I've been (seriously) listening to and playing bluegrass for about a year now, and it's the first kind of music that can actually make me cry when I'm listening to it or playing... It sometimes just gets to you, too perfect!
Thanks for sharing this amazing video, great to see a performance of this song when they just recorded Bluegrass Rules!
I figured out why most modern music sucks. Ricky Skaggs stole all the best musicians.
