  • Hi Ray, Just got hold of a Marconiphone T21A, Cabinet being restored but the radio does fire up and rx ok, should I get it checked out and the capacitors etc replaced? Really love old valve radios..could get into this big time..beats listen to 59..20 mtr pile ups. Cheers Ian G0YAP.

  • @G0YAP It might be a good idea to have the radio serviced as you're having the cabinet restored. Cheers, Ray.

  • @yourkshire1able A Magnetic Loop Antenna is the absolute best setup for apartments and tight spaces, bar none. Best defence against interference!!!

  • For someone like myself, who can't erect an external antenna (apartment block), what is the best indoor alternative?

  • By the by, Ray, I have an old vintage radio Bluencomf? please excuse my poor spelling that I had dismantled 10 years ago, needing the apartment space at the time. Anyhow all I have anymore is the main tube deck and the basic radio and the plastic (1940s 1950s plastic channel indicator display) and was wondering if it might be worth it to reassemble it? And I too had started when a boy, some 45 or so+ years ago, listening to radio. Great stuff that hobby. Murray K in Ottawa.

  • Hey Ray, good informative stuff. Was just online and found your site, thanks for posting it. Am thinking about a Grundig S350 DL for am/fm and swl worldwide.

    Whatcha think?

  • Why make a video, on a subject about which you know little? I don't get it.

  • @Jamiep84 Hi Jamie, I think you’ve missed the point. The video is non-technical for people who have old domestic valve radios covering short wave. It would be crazy for me to talk about doublets fed with 600 ohm open-wire feeder or coax-fed dipoles. My customers aren’t using communications receivers or transmitting on the HF bands. For the technically minded, I cover transmitting aerials on my amateur radio web site. All the best, Ray.

  • @g4nsj jamiep84 is so obviously a troll and you Ray such a gentlemen to bother replying to him. You have repaired 3 radios for me and always do a top notch job. You sir are clearly an expert on this subject.

  • @TenorClef1971 Thanks for your nice comments. Have a great Christmas. All the best, Ray.

  • I have been a DXer since i was a kid back in 1992 and I still find this hobby very interesting and even mysterious at times when it comes to utility stations. It is good to know the hobby is alive and well.

  • Hello, thanks for the video, very informative. About a good earth : I live on the third floor in a big city in a rented house. It's not possible for me to get a good earth. What do you suggest I would do to compensate for this? Can I use the earth pin of the mains socket as an earth connection? By the way, I don't have central heating neither.

  • @DanCeekey Hi, don't use the mains earth. You can use a so-called artificial earth, info should be on the internet somewhere. 73 Ray.

  • Excellent, thanks!

  • thanks for the video.....73s from island of marmara

  • @teunaydin Thank you. All the best from the UK.

  • Great info! Thanks a bunch.

  • Hi, thanks for commenting and good luck with the radio. Cheers, Ray.

  • great vid thxs.I have an old 1937 silvertone radio #4569 cant wait to try your ideas thxs a bunch .will let you know how it works out.thxs again

  • Good stuff! Thank you, sir!

  • It's been almost 2yrs since you made this video and I'm glad I got to see it. I will now remember whats good during the day, then the night. I purchased a G-5 grundig S.Wave radio and was not haveing any luck on my patio(faceing north-east). My freind lives near me but faceing south-west and the radio had lots of action as I turned the dial. I notice people who use satilite dishes have them faceing south, does S.Wave work on the same principle?

  • Great videos Ray! from WA1UFO in New Hampshire

  • that's my pleasure........long live shortwave and all who receive her.

  • that was very interesting....gives me a few pointers to think about

at present i have 66.5 ft of wire outside...goes round the house and then down the garden...i listen only but i have an amateur radio.....in doors i use also a roberts sw radio....with it i made up a slinky aerial...which works pretty good

  • @mikejk27 Great stuff, thanks for your comment.

  • Remember the little birds and put some small strips of colored sticky tape at regular intervals along the antenna, so they can see it and avoid it.

  • Good info, answered few of my questions! think im goin to put antenna on apex of roof. 22 gauge? might first loop a wire round my Garage (workshop) that would be nearly 30m!

  • Sounds good. Don't worry about wire size too much, as long as it's not too thin. Cheers, Ray.
