Forgive the contradiction,but if you think about it both personalities are evil. Smeagol is just the self pitying personality of the creature. Did he not kill his best friend? did he not try to murder and eat Bilbo in the Hobbit story.Also Smeagol / Gollum, led Frodo and Sam to Shelobs lair for his own evil ends.
