@alicemckin actually It was written for the BBC film "The Dark Island" in 1963. This was filmed mainly in South Uist, but was about Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides. Their actually was Another set of words to the tune was written by Stewart Ross of Inverness. The film was done In Scotland and many see it as a Scottish song actually. In any case I think that songs that were really for movies aren't truly traditional at all. In any case its a wonderful song and not what many call
@alicemckin that crap they play for visitors. It really fits well on many instruments where violin or bagpipes or about anything. And a lot of what I see as traditional for either is sung in Gaelic but that is because I like it sung that way theirs more poetry to the tongue then English has IMO
@ambersdarkfox I was referring to the legend of the irish piper,who was washed ashore on benbecula,I'm probably wrong but I thought that the music, not the words were supposed to evoke the tune he played for an angel.I'm probably wrong,but anyway It's a beautiful tune.
@alicemckin In the end right or wrong doesn't matter makes for something interesting to talk about which is more often then not important :) Music both tune and voice are supposed to inspire thinking, Imagination and often conversation. When it is good tune it does all 3.
