Actually if you put in the console "host_framerate (framerate here)" you can choose how many times a second it takes that "photograph" therfore, reducing the amount of time it takes to render. (render is the proper terminology)

You have to append AVI at the end of the StartMovie "name" command. That gets AVI's, but its kinda buggy...on mine at least. Fraps is worse for me though.

You change the settings in options to change the quality, fps, whether or not you have sound, and screen size, there're several other options too.
