Obama's initial response was correct. In my town, it is amazing how me, a white adult, can drive around, loud muffler, cracked tail light, through the yellow light etc. while a young black or latino is pulled over in a heartbeat. It is so obviously a racial thing. And another thing, your idea that routinely falsely arresting people is acceptable is preposterous! You obviously don't know the law. Anyone can demand a badge number as Gates did, AFTER, he proved his identity.

I feel strongly that these people need our full support. Nobody is above the law, however, and in the Gates case, the way I see it, officer could of turned the other cheek and walked away after ascertaining Gates identity, and that there was no break in. I think it was ego and frustration... not cause for the cuffs, or arrest!

Really? you dont show it. Police officers have strict engagement rules to follow because of liberals who are quick to use the racial card. Educate yourself and read the reports Mr. Gates followed the police officer out of the house in a confrontational mode making obscene racist statements and accusations to the officer and his family (his mother). Onsite Black, Latino and White officers all reported no racial profiling. I believe that demonstrates Gates and Obama harbor racist elitist beliefs.

There was absolutely no need for Obama to get involved in this. I believe his hope was to appear as the one who healed this wound, but, we are not children, Crowley and Gates got together and resolved this on their own, before the "Beer Summit". As Sgt. Crowley stated, "Obama supplied the beer". Other than adding fuel to the fire, Obama played no role in the matter. His "Beer Summit", was nothing but a photo op, and played no role in the resolution of the matter.

If Canada can get more efficiency, and better results out of their health plan system shouldn't we at least consider those aspects that may as well help us do better?

Again, unsure where you're getting your information, but it is incorrect. Canada IS NOT enjoying more efficiency from their health plan. Just the opposite the program is nearly broke and Canadians are dissatisfied. If Canadians like their health care system so much why do they cross into the US receive treatment? Think it may have something to do with the 5 months it takes to be assigned a physician and then await to receive government approval of medication or procedures required?

I'll have to double check this, as I am certain I read somewhere, maybe last year, that their system cost hem as a whole less per capita, and that people there were generally more satisfied with the quality. With a slowed down economy, and less dollars to work with, it wouldn't surprise me that they would be hurting too. I think we all have to be careful of seeing everything through the prism of our own pre-conceived viewpoints, and the politics (and agendas) of where we get our "facts"

If there is a "teachable moment" in this situation, it is this. If you are going to complain to a police officer on the perception that he is being racist, complain politely. Had Gates been polite in his complaint, Crowley wouldn't have a reason to arrest Gates.

This lesson should be taken by the TEA party protesters. Be polite to the cops, even if the cops overstep their legal and constitutional bounds.

I agree with everything you said, except for the claim that the arrest was appropriate. The Mass. disorderly conduct law specifically states that speech alone can not be considered disorderly conduct. The 1st amendment protects speech, so yelling, screaming, even insulting a policeman should not be an arrestable offense. Of course, cops tend to believe they can arrest anyone for anything, so fine details like, "the law," are usually irrelevant anyway.
