  • This video is exactly what I was looking for today ! This asshole "friend" of mine tried to convince me that I'm crazy because I didn't acquiesce to his pedantic unthoughtful religious crap !!

  • Although not ideal of course, cognitive dissonance that is, it is obviously a relative advantage compared to a closed minded state. Subsequently, this signifies an small opening to reason.

Currently, the world in general is filled with cognitive dissonance, which obviously means a state of doubt, thus the possibility of accepting new ideas overall. Just ask all religions in general. Obviously , the abandonment of traditions is not limited to religion; it encompasses all aspects ofculture

  • By the end of it, I wasn't sure if you were serious or speaking satirically. Almost entirely safely assuming the latter, thank you for the video. Amusing, and grandly true in a deeply personal way.

  • youre intelligent... and soooo sexy

  • the "t" for your intro name looks like a cross... the Christian cross at that.

  • Not a fan of irony?

  • HUGE fan.

  • Thank you! We were talking about this in my Rhetoric course. If I am not mistaken, gather that you are actually pointing out the flaws in human nature that cause us to shut down and never get anywhere when we disagree with each other. Far to often we are prepared to fight, be dismissive, or insult, rather than to listen and make points that might cause us to actually understand each other.

  • I agree with most of your viewpoints and try to practice some of them. This can be used for any kind of debate and that is what I am interpreting your video as. One of the best ways I find to counter is you have obtained several sources to back up what you say.

  • Precisely!

I reckon that I'm simply not driven enough to argue for very long with someone. I prefer to opt out and leave my opponent to their opinions, as I mutter "Exit, stage left", (a la Snagglepuss) while feeling annoyed with myself for being sucked into the argument in the first place.

What cracks me up is when someone walks away and then then comes back, saying "And another thing..."

    Nope.

  • Dude your accent is badass! I wish I had one like it.

  • Brilliant! XD

Best video i´ve seen on YouTube in a long time!

    5/5!

  • i know he is RIGHT:)

thats why he is on my favs list..

  • now if there was only a cure for CD

  • I see this a lot in political divisions.

  • Win!

  • Ha, sad but all too true.

I think the main problem is that most people take debate, whether about theism or economics or modern art or bacon, as a personal attack. We can't usually distinguish between a criticism of ideas and a criticism of character.

  • "Grey" is a bad way to describe a good view of things. It implies that there isn't a single truth value of true/false. Things aren't ever grey. The problem is any restraint on reason, psychological, social, or otherwise. The idea that the person who believes differently than you is any kind of opposition is also horrible. If people are thinking clearly, and concerned most about truth, then the ones that disagree are the ones you want to talk with.

  • On the other hand you can't ever actually have an ACTUAL truth. You can't know if something is actually true, you can only assume, and based on observations you might have a something that is so likely to be true that its easy to just assume it is. But you can't actually know anything you know is actually well, there.

  • If you're talking about empirical truths I agree, but that involves a very radically skepticism that doesn't really allow for anything at all. What amount of skepticism does it take for us to realize that we 'don't know' that water is made of H20? It takes an incredible amount. And we always have truths of logic.

  • But that is what facts are, things we've observed and simply decided to hold as the truth. The way how we have a very hair fine line between what we can call a truth and what we can't is one of the reasons I don't like religion. They assume that they have an ultimate truth, that has no faults what so ever. There is no such truth, you cannot HAVE such a truth because you cannot actually know something is actually true.

  • LOL. I'm too familiar with this, both in myself and in other people.

    5 star.

  • This is how i act when people don't like the bands i like.

  • Is this a parody or some other form of comedy, because I find this video to be funny ;o)

  • Yes-ish. Showing how not to act...by pointing out how silly it is to dismiss people completely on the basis that "You" are "Right", and they can't POSSIBLY be wrong..you know..because you're right lol.

  • Can't POSSIBLY be right***

  • lol good video

  • The audio in this video is incredibly... "dry". The whole audiopicture is kind of annoying to listen to, the background noise doesn't help it either.

    Good content though.

  • Good stuff. It gets very frustrating thinking about it sometimes. Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish, but it's almost impossible at times to even show which one is the fool and which one just thinks the other is. I've considered many times that it may just be me, but never really manage to actually convince myself that it is because in my head, my logic seems perfect and it's hard to grasp how some one else doesn't get it. The problem, is that they're thinking the same thing.

  • you're obsessed with Burial, hu?

  • I never actually listen to them outside of what I put into my videos.

    They do decent background music.

  • Are you trying to say that Pastafarians are deluded in their belief of FSM??

Remind me to run me cutlass through you next time I'm down under! Aaaaaarg!!

  • i ROFLed :DDDD

    funny stuff man :D

  • good point about not showing weakness. I find that when people show confidence even if they may not be sure about whether their position is the correct one, they can still come across as more open minded. That ending was great with a slight hint of sarcasm, but could in some cases be true. Good video. :)

  • Your videos are great. There is a lot of good philosophy videos on youtube, it is refreshing to see some good psychology videos too.

I think you gave a pretty accurate summary of how us humans often think and operate.

    Wait, your an atheist?

Nevermind, everything you said was wrong.

  • Sarcasm noted and enjoyed.

  • Refreshingly sarcastic, and painfully true. I am right, i know i'm right, so you must be wrong, deluded, and probably evil. therefore i must kill you. BOOM!

  • It can be understandable though, when you run into 100 people with the same opinion who are all irrational about it to assume that all of the people who hold that opinion are irrational, and to treat them as such before they have a chance to prove themselves one or the other.

I'm not saying it's right, just understandable.

I find that the best way to keep myself in check is to play devils advocate for my opponent.

It's become a complex. I'm a devils advocate for EVERYTHING now...

  • Lol, and here I was thinking that we had a good conversation on the comment forum on "My Falsehoods".

Anyways, good video, with points I occasionally find myself guilty of. Then again, I think that, at times, we're all guilty of at least of a couple of these flaws in argument.

  • Lol nah, I appreciated your comments. It was everyone else who seemed to jump the gun and not go out of their way to actually have a conversation.

And I agree. This is something we all do. It's very tempting.

The only way I've managed to limit it is to take time outs and come back to the discussion later. It's hard.

  • Good video sir.

I have at times attempted to have a simply open discussion about the existence of god with someone holding an opposing view. It just seems impossible to sustain. For a start it is hard to get 2 people in that state of mind in one place at the same time and I cannot maintain that state of mind indefinitely.

The closest I have come is - you tell me your facts one at time and I will refute them if I can and admit when I can't and agree a good point if one is made.

  • excellent video, and this is why all of this immigration must stop now.

We have borders for reasons and if they are crossed, there is trouble..

Multiculturism sounds great but will never work.

Just look at the fuckin mess we are in now ( UK that is ),ethnic minorities all over the place saying they are mistreat, bollocks,if you don`t like it here, just go home.

To please yourself is bad enough,to pleases all is impossible.

I`m not a racist but if I go to Rome,I do as Romans do,not as I want

  • ...... what does this have anything to do with this video?

  • Way to use a video of no relevance to unleash you racial hatred out on those that really don't care.

And for the record the line 'I'm not a racist but..'

Usually means that yes, you totally are.

  • Oh man this is brilliant, I couldn't help but smile and laugh at myself inside. That's basically how I think a lot of the time in these types of discussions. Granted that rarely have I been given reason to think otherwise with the people I've encountered, but still.

  • this is good, but this can go both ways on the theistic, and atheistic battle. I find the best thing to do is also to study up on their side, their flaws. before you even come to something like it in the debate. then point something out that is contradictory in their out look. the bible has a contradiction for everything it seas so this is easy. then try to make them defined their hypocrisy's. you then look like the smart one, and them the fool:)

  • Interesting. Good points on winning a debate.

  • Great video!

  • Not really well put. Here's 3 videos that explain rather well.

    Open mindedness: watch?v=T69TOuqaqXI

    Cognitive Dissonance: watch?v=UP-B1tgWfJU

    Congruence: watch?v=xyE8wUteFA4

  • Way to totally miss the point of the video

  • I understood the point. The point was to make a satire of cognitive dissonance. What I meant by "not so well put" is that the video better fits a satire of ignorance. They are close so I can see how they can be confused.

  • A satire for cognitive dissonance would be if instead of attacking the opponent he would dismiss the facts, no matter how obviously factual, whenever they contradicted a predetermined conclusion.

It's a specific kind of ignorance that he missed.

For example, you could NOT acknowledge that the special type of ignorance known as cognitive dissonance was not used at all in this video since you have already made up your mind that the video does illustrate it.

  • Well done. You've just gone and proved exactly what I have just said. This video is not a satire of cognitive dissonance at all, you've really gone and missed the point.

  • What exactly is the point of stating something without explaining it? What is the point then? I could go into a guessing game.

  • Because I honestly thought you'd have the intelligence to maybe pick up on the quite self explanatory statement of you misunderstanding the video and maybe watching it again. I apologise. I clearly gave you much more credit then a child that needs their information spoon fed to them.

And if by the time you've finished reading this and you still haven't figured out the point then it's really time to hang up your brain and call it a day.

  • OK I think it's time I jump in before someone loses an eye or poke eachother's eyes out with crayons.

newexperiment, the point of the video is not a satire of cognitive dissonance. If you want to grasp at what the point really is try skipping the start of the video and working it out from that. If you work that out, then the beginning will make sense.

And no, I wont explain it to you. There's a good reason I didn't spoonfeed you the point in the video.

  • Now I think I'm going to block you both temporarily until you can stop acting like five-year olds.

  • This is why I always lose arguments. I have to stop being open-minded and thinking that other people are rational.

  • lol awsome video dude, thinking on this it fits the thiests so well, but i also realised that i ocasionaly use the same kinda mentality when debating, usually when i cant be bothered to go on with the debate. Its interesting to try and think of the rational reasons behind thiestic belief or what mite seen rational from their perspective.

anyway i rant, awsome video dude.
