you do not need to buy the buckets. most restaurants which use pickles have them, and bakeries have something similar. check out globalbuckets org for other options, too. though, I personally have found that I can skip the 2nd bucket route by putting tons of air-holes all around the body, leaving the lowest two inches untouched. this naturally creates a water reservoir at bottom, and i have had no root rot since lots of air coming in all along sides of body
I am trying this bucket system now. I discovered putting a bucket from Walmart into a bucket from Lowes gives me 5 inches of water at the bottom. Its the way they fit that gives me more room in the bottom of the Lowes bucket. I used Patio Plus from Lowes it has compost, chicken, bat poo and seaweed in it. I also added worm casting and worms to it. Now I will watch and see it this works. No commercial fertilizer was used.
Thank you for your interest in my little garden. I will be posting part 2 which shows how I make the double buckets. I will video my bucket garden again so you can see which plants survived the winter freezes...not too pretty, but beginning to produce fruit again.
@manzur27 Thanks for commenting. Stay tuned for part 2 which I videoed today. It shows the kind of holes to drill in the buckets to have success in efficient watering with minimal water waste.
I watched your video which crazy interesting and fabulously shot and edited. (I haven't figured out how to edit my videos yet.)
Is the black plastic on top necessary? what is it's purpose. Thanks for the vid - I may try this myself.

Looks good. I wish I had green buckets instead of the orange Home Depot ones I do have. I'm growing 8 buckets this year plus 2 made from totes.

I keep looking for the follow up video! How are they doing for you? I started two tomato plants in these. Thanks for the replies.
