I remember watching Daiaporonin Japan with my friends. We all wondered (even at a real young age): when the 3 robots combined and then the pilot would grow into the armor, where do all the robots' machine parts get displaced? Also, no one in Japan plays American football (which is the sports concept in the story) so that was also a bit strange.
It didn't help that half of it was made by Go Nagai. I don't know how he found time to eat, breathe and sleep while basically laying down the entire foundation for multiple anime genres.
No, you're absolutely right. It's pretty formulaic stuff. But at the same time, it was created for kids and not for adults. In recent years, I've watched a lot of the old shows I grew up with. Most of them haven't aged all that well.
Every giant robot team always had the same kind of characters: sly rogue, brainy guy, prissy chick that could fight, goofy strong guy and the baby brother. What was with that?
Thanks for the awesome collections of the 70's. I used to watch them all. I still even have the Voltron V toys 'til today. It was nicely built in hard metal. I had to save my money to get one at time before I could combine them to one robot.

Correction to the comment below: I meant to say Voltes V, not Voltron. Voltes V is the second of the trilogy.

Combattler V is one of my favorite anime series- it has lots of action but it also has good storylines.
