"Lolita" is a name and it was usually used in the context of a "young girl" - "Lolita" is a pet name of "Dolores". When you say "lolita" in Europe, most people will remember the classical book by Nabokov, but when you say the same word in Japan, people will often think about a little girl, not the novel.

Who knows why they named the style "lolita", maybe they just liked the name ~ For example, "goth" people have nothing (or almost nothing) in common with the "gothic era"...

I don't think anyone actually knows how the style was called lolita. The fashion has been around since the late 70s I believe although it was much different back then. It wasn't called lolita until later. Someone outside the fashion probably called it that because it looked childish or creepy to them (look up the book on wikipedia and you'll understand) and the name caught on. The gothic part only refers to a subcategory of lolita which adds darker elements of western goth to the lolita style.
