I'm a singer and I have to say her diction is very good. I think the only reason some do not understand that easily is that she has an impeccable legato. I would rather loose some words and get a nice phrasing, phrasing and dynamics. I mean... I can only talk for mysef.. I have heard that aria so many times I could even recite the whole thing even during a coma.
@deterrese that's because sopranos often have to sacrifice certain consonants and vowels in order to sing that high. That's what all my choir instructors have said.
"Roméo et Juliette" es una ópera en un prólogo y cinco actos, con música de Charles Gounod y libreto de Jules Barbier y Michael Carré, basados en la famosa pieza homónima de Shakespeare. Fue estrenada en el Théâtre Lyrique de París, el 27 de abril de 1867.
I will be honest and say that I am new to the world of Opera singers. I have very shady background, one that you would not expect to like such music. I have to say that Singers like Sumi Jo have changed my heart; therefore, changed my life.
Si yo digo lo mismo la verdad es que esta aria sale muchisimo mejor con Joan sutherland esque sumi jo puede hacer mucho mejor pero otras arias no me gusta esta interpretacion
On the other hand, I prefer Maria Callas' version.
Not to mention I am Korean. Maria is full of emotion and love. Sumi maybe technically better....Just my opinion. She doesn't bring tears to my eyes as Maris does.
hjparkma why should an ecstatic aria bring tears to your eyes, inappropriate affect, not unless those are tears of happiness LOL ... Maria Callas was acclaimed for her dramaturgical prowess for PAIN! And this is a RECITAL ... not opera ... Maria is spinto basically while Sumi is lyric ... it is a matter of taste ... odd you're Korean yet you are not proud of the best international operatic sensation ever to come from your part of the world????
you can't compare singers because there are so many who are so good. its all personal. what do you look for? my personal favorite is joan sutherland. others cant stand her because of her diction. some love maria callas, i cant stand her. they are all still amazing.
@preppybeast6293 Wonderful comment! It's so nice to see a comment like yours after listening to so many people arguing over singers...and many times by using nasty personal attacks. Bravo for your diplomacy! Would that all people on YT were as polite and diplomatic as you are.
@CatalinaDM56 because we're brought up in a competitive society, we're insecure, most of us have nothing better to do and it's now human nature. I blame Oscar Wilde and Louis XIV.
she won the 1st puccini prize. you mean damrau is better than her if sumi jo won the prize not damrau? these people who are criticising sumi jo is idiotics. you're are not a expert. the puccini prize is only given to those people who are best in soprano
she is the best soprano so far. you mean damrau is better than her if sumi jo won the first internatonalk puccini prize when damrau did not won any famous prize like sumi jo. when you get older, there will be more vibrato. not like toung. when sumi jo was young, she sang like a crystal.
Um, you should check the score - practically every word has a chromatic appogiatura. Sumi is an excellent interpreter of the musical score. And who are you? If she did something inappropriate, the conductor would have fixed it in rehearsal. Plus, when someone has a career as long and as successful as hers, at this point she can do whatever the hell she wants on stage.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
well for you information, i have checked the score, as i really admire this aria. and yes she is successful but just because she has a big name for herself, and she "can" "do whatever the hell she wants"...doesnt mean she SHOULD! it degrades her as a professional singer/muscian. but thats her choice
I can see your view. However, if you are truly an innate musician yourself, you would be able to recognize the differences in interpretation. Obviously this performance did not result in any self degrading for Jo. You shouldn't consider your particular interpretation as "correct", but simply "different" from others.
It upsets me a student of sining that there are so many artists out there who get away with not singing the correct music and they are admired for it. I know their interpreation/voice is the key thing that people applaud and love, but shouldn't that be on top of the basic music as written by the composer? They're not setting a good example that's all... frustrating...
Well, it depends. If you look at the history of performance practice, the idea that the composer's work is sacrosanct is a fairly new concept. Performers in the early 19th century would chop and change roles at will, even inserting arias from other operas. So which attitude is right? That's just it, neither. It's all a matter of opinion.
At the end of the day, what's more important: that a dead white man's music is sung as written, or that the living, paying audience gets a good show?
That said, I'm not saying this is a good performance. It's so heavy on portamento that she is actually swooping from note to note, it's clearly underrehearsed and Ms. Jo herself very definitely appears to be having an off night.
Sumi Jo remains to be the one of the best coloraturas of all time! To think that she can still sing that beautifully even upto now, that is INCREDIBLE!
beautiful voice... but why oh why do they not teach ethics of being on stage today??? the incessant movement she makes with her body is distracting when in recital form. I was instantly turned off by the way she thinks more about how her hair is lying and waving to someone in the orchestra before she begins. The message should be the music, not "how I look"
This sounds a little crazy, but maybe it was her time of the month...it's tougher to support the higher notes during that time..and everything can be a little off. Maybe that's tmi...i dunno. ;)
What exactly you think whent wrong? I just see Jo as a diferent singer, authentic, unique timbre, exquisite tonic accents on the phrasing(which can make it odd..but new to the ear) ..and she sounds diferent compared to what those "same cookie factory" sopranos sound like...
I prefer renee flemming. I just feel that this performance was mechanical and...yeah something lacking. She has a small voice in this song. Maybe it was an off night for her. I typically enjoy her voice.
Seriously Belle, exclude 4 months and tell me how long you have been listening to serious opera. If you're a buff, I would have to accept your personal appreciation and taste; but if you're new, refresh your ears and tell me Renee's chest voice is the most disgusting thing you've ever heard (Forgive me, the fans, that's my most sincere notion)
I've been listening to opera my whole life, and I've been receiving classical training for 3 years, been singing independantly since I was 13, I'm 24....I don't see what any of this has to do with preference. I'm allowed to have mine and you're allowed yours. I'm an adult and I can reason. I won't knock your opinion because it's yours. Have a good day.
and please spend some time explaining to me what that is about her chest voice that's so charming (and I'm not being sarcastic). Please keep in mind that I don't deny her talent, a lirico spinto-lirico coloratura that can hit g3 is no joke.
Wait... You aren't saying Renee is a spinto, are you? Or a coloratura? Renee is a talented singer, but I don't think she spans three fachs. ;) In my mind, Renee is a lyric soprano, MAYBE nudging the line towards full lyric/spinto.. And has no business performing this aria.
is there some kinda secret opera club where you can judge every singer or piece and be accepted as a member or not accpted (i forgot the word) as a no-member you asshole

I felt as though she was lacking something... She needs character or personality. I'm only left with the opinion that she is singing a recital - to me she is NOT Juliette. Which is a pity, for she could have been - with a little more acting or charisma or something. Still, thanks for posting it! :)
I don't know guys, but she appeals to me as a "selfish" opera singer. IMO, singers (and muscians in gral) should be able to interpret what the composer wrote on the paper. I find it of bad taste when they try to "fix" the music in order to facilitate things...just my opinion.
Personally, I think this aria doesn't suit her voice type at all. Because this aria was written for a full lyric soprano or a dramatic coloratura who is capable of singing with a "full lyric" sound comfortably. To my knowledge, Sumi is a lyric coloratura (not dramatic) and is more suitable to roles like Queen of the Night, Olympia, Lucia among others. She has a beautiful voice, but personally I think she is trying to sing beyond her station.
