The book never had a Napoleon Dynamite feel. There was a desperate quality to the narrator, but he was also likeable and very articulate, with a strong voice and a very definite world view. The film has very little do to with the novel.
Incidentally, FOX attempted a tv series and filmed a pilot, but it didn't go over. The author said the pilot was nice, but that it wasn't anything like his book.
