The reason why it has stuck as an English sports anthem is because we we're the first country to outlaw slavery.. and proud of it.

The first time it was used in English rugby was to salute a black player in the late 80's.

I find it offensive that England took this song and named it as their "Rugby Anthem." It's a spiritual/inspirational gospel used by black people in America during times of slavery and also civil rights. Taking it as an "anthem" is almost a bit racist.
