  • Really? I had no idea. It originally wasn't written in English then or was it?

  • best song eva go england

  • This is a honorific version of the song. Do you realize it's a slave song? Jesus Christ.........

  • The reason why it has stuck as an English sports anthem is because we we're the first country to outlaw slavery.. and proud of it.

The first time it was used in English rugby was to salute a black player in the late 80's.

  • First of all, slavery did not take hold in Britain, just as it didn't in Northern America not because of a lack of racism. It was because the economic and geographical conditions in those places did not make it beneficial to whites in those places.

Furthermore, it is offensive to take a song about the long fought battle over the right of a whole category of people to be treated the same as anyone else and to brand it as a jingle for something so trivial as a sports team.

  • I never said that slavery took place in Britain, it took place in the British empire.

It is not offensive, black people sing it at Twickenham to salute the team, as well as white people - why make everything about race. In fact, it'd be deemed racist if we didn't sing it after all these years just because it is a black gospel hymn.

  • Black BRITISH people...

  • yes all English rubgy fans sing it, black and white.

  • Yes I know that. What I was saying was that the backs singing are not American - not descended from American slaves.

  • yes but nonetheless descended from slaves of the British empire. The song was about one mans struggle of slavery so not specifically African-American slaves.

  • Uh know it wasn't -_-....."Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" was composed by Wallis Willis, a Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory, sometime before 1862. He was inspired by the Red River which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah being taken to heaven by a chariot.

  • A priest heard the song so he sent the music to the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Jubilee Singers then popularized the songs during a tour of the United States and Europe.

  • what exactly was that response to, because I never said who it was written by or popularized by, so I don't see your point?

Or was it just a general bit of info for me?

  • Oh my bad my friend was using my computer and I guess he forgot to log on to his account and just used mine. (my answer is..I don't know... -_-

  • OK, fair do's mate

  • Thats why Ali Campbells tour was cancelled and postponed til next year.

Never remember UB40 having to reschedule a whole tour.

UB40 are massive, with or without Ali.

  • @Alirocksmyworld i saw them live twice without Ali,and they are awesome! the new album is a hit also.

  • Three of the tries came in quick succession from Chris Oti, a black player making his Twickenham debut. A group from the Benedictine school Douai started to sing a rugby club favourite -- the gospel hymn "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" -- in honour of their new hero, large sections of the crowd joined in. The song is still regularly sung at matches by supporters.

  • The Twickenham crowd had only seen one solitary England try in the previous two years and at half time against Ireland they were 0-3 down. However during the second half England scored six tries to give them a 35-3 win.

  • Well, you weren't familiar with whites singing this song, okay. Well, Bill Medley(rightious brothers) sung it(I think it's one of the best versions, seriously). Rugby players got in contact with the song when Coming into the last match of the 1988 season, against Ireland at Twickenham, England had lost 15 of their previous 23 matches in the Five Nations Championship.

  • they got in contact with it by a choir that was there. and the person that score their points was a nigerian man called chirs oti

  • OMG i was at that concert it was hell good LOVE EM !!

  • great song! cheers form brazil!!

  • cool song! ENGLAND TRUELY ARE THE BEST!!!... won the world cup and then the next 1 we got into the final!!!!

  • THIS IS SOOOOOOOOO COOOOL

    :-)

  • still a great song

  • i still get excited at this video

  • a great song, and a great game. nevertheless, it's odd that English Rugby would use an anthem that has nothing to do with England, and nothing to do with Rugby.

i think the song was produced by Blacks over here. before i encountered English Rugby, i wasn't familiar with any Whites using that song. it's in my church hymnal, yet i haven't heard it sung there.

  • Black, white, green, orange, who gives a toss

  • i think it's fine for people to sing songs created by other races, yet i'm not sure how people in england heard about the song in the first place. also the song is very religious, and thus i was a bit surprised to find a rugby team using it. it sounds like something that a baptist or pentecostal would sing.

  • scotland pumped y u b 40 lol

  • DATZ MUH JAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i went to this last night they are at the nec again now

  • Being a passionate lad this song makes me feel pround even if it does originate from another country. You disappoint us sometimes boys but we love you!

  • the most influential song of my entire life, still brings a tear to my eye

    well done lads

  • whouh xD

  • The song is very tastefully performed. Geat show guys!

  • Well then you should stop singing boyzone

  • lol and people wonder why some white people are racist - coz we can't do fuck all without someone with a different skin colour piping up saying "that's racist". So what if it was orinigally used by slaves - a white person invented electricity so you can't use that so you shouldn't even be ON youtube. Saying that white people can't use things that people with different skin colours made really promotes peace and tolerance doesn't it! Get a life!

  • i agree!

altho i do prefer the ladysmith black mambazo's version of this song (and im a huge ub40 fan!) coz it jus seems to suit a black choirs voice better. most probs because of the historical context i guess!

  • ummm they didnt claim the have written the song... they are just singing it..... not stealing.... but take some comfort that they did suck.

  • exactly, i'm not saying wether it was good or bad but saying they shouldn't be ALLOWED to sing it just coz they're white is in itself racist. And just for good measure i though it was quite good.

  • "And just for good measure i though it was quite good. "

see now your trying to state an opinion as fact. also note I didnt say they couldnt sing it... please adress that concern to originator of that comment.

  • well it was supposed to be directed to the person who originally made the comment so sorry if you couldn't see that. Also i never said that my opinion was a fact which is why i used the phrase "i thought".

  • ok serioulsy!! the constant camera angle shifts in this are pissing me off..... never mind you have white guys doing an only passable job of the song... but I'm about to have an epeleptic fit over the damed visuals.... fuck eh!

  • racist

  • how so? racist comments are almost always by definition blanket statements... I made no such blanket statements in conjunction with their race... I merely observed that they where white and expressed the opinion that they where butchering the song. descriptive and opinoinated my comment was indeed. Racist? No, not at all.

  • Awesome harmony, great vocals, not too loud with precussion. Not to mention a beautiful song. I know nothing about rugby but if you guys want to use this as your anthem it doesn't bother me. Wouldn't mind hearing it more often...

  • ive got tickets 5 row from the front at newcastle !! got 1 ticket spare if u want it contact me X

  • I find it offensive that England took this song and named it as their "Rugby Anthem." It's a spiritual/inspirational gospel used by black people in America during times of slavery and also civil rights. Taking it as an "anthem" is almost a bit racist.

I don't dislike England or anything, as I find it ignorant to hate an entire country; however, it just strikes me as wrong to call it a "Rugby Anthem."

Anyway, it's a great song, especially when done by UB40.

  • It was not meant to be racist because rugby is enjoyed by all sorts of races and classes. The reason is below from wikipedia

  • In 1988 England had only won 8 matches out of 23 in the previous five nations. And at home at Twickenham they were losing to Ireland and a black player called Chris Oti, scored three of the six tries in that match, which England won so. A group from the Benedictine school Douai started to sing a rugby club favourite -- the gospel hymn Swing Low, Sweet Chariot -- in honour of their new hero, large sections of the crowd joined in

  • is that true? im only 19, i didnt know it started so recently. it sounds like one of those traditional things handed down from generations.

  • Yep! It was how ever a slave song which is believed to have been sung about freedom and the first underground railroad, hence the first verse I looked over jordan, what do i see... A band of angels coming after me..

  • why wouldn't it be called a rugby anthem when it is sung regularly at certain rugby matches.

you are the one trying to make this about race when that is pretty obviously (to me and i think most others) that its not intended. in my eyes that makes you the racist one, if anyone.

  • Kewl Video - gr8 song gr8 band
