Great rendition and fusion. Love Our Song - it's an anthem of mine. I've seen Gabriel and Genesis in Europe and North America but this is great. From a Sheldon boy now settled in Canada, well done UB40! Next one for you is Jerusalem by Parry.
First of all, slavery did not take hold in Britain, just as it didn't in Northern America not because of a lack of racism. It was because the economic and geographical conditions in those places did not make it beneficial to whites in those places.
Furthermore, it is offensive to take a song about the long fought battle over the right of a whole category of people to be treated the same as anyone else and to brand it as a jingle for something so trivial as a sports team.
I never said that slavery took place in Britain, it took place in the British empire.
It is not offensive, black people sing it at Twickenham to salute the team, as well as white people - why make everything about race. In fact, it'd be deemed racist if we didn't sing it after all these years just because it is a black gospel hymn.
yes but nonetheless descended from slaves of the British empire. The song was about one mans struggle of slavery so not specifically African-American slaves.
Uh know it wasn't -_-....."Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" was composed by Wallis Willis, a Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory, sometime before 1862. He was inspired by the Red River which reminded him of the Jordan River and of the Prophet Elijah being taken to heaven by a chariot.
A priest heard the song so he sent the music to the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. The Jubilee Singers then popularized the songs during a tour of the United States and Europe.
Seeing this reminds me of how music should be: played by skilled musicians who work together and love the music they play, rather than the wierd, sexual, self-serving ego crap peddled out by Madonna et al.
Three of the tries came in quick succession from Chris Oti, a black player making his Twickenham debut. A group from the Benedictine school Douai started to sing a rugby club favourite -- the gospel hymn "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" -- in honour of their new hero, large sections of the crowd joined in. The song is still regularly sung at matches by supporters.
The Twickenham crowd had only seen one solitary England try in the previous two years and at half time against Ireland they were 0-3 down. However during the second half England scored six tries to give them a 35-3 win.
Well, you weren't familiar with whites singing this song, okay. Well, Bill Medley(rightious brothers) sung it(I think it's one of the best versions, seriously). Rugby players got in contact with the song when Coming into the last match of the 1988 season, against Ireland at Twickenham, England had lost 15 of their previous 23 matches in the Five Nations Championship.
Does anyone else know of any other Referral Codes such as, for example, JUSTMORE at Fulltiltpoker com, where you receive a several hundred dollars as a gift? With this Referral Code you can poker with the money you just received and therefore at almost no risk! Fulltiltpoker accepts all Americans!!
a great song, and a great game. nevertheless, it's odd that English Rugby would use an anthem that has nothing to do with England, and nothing to do with Rugby.
i think the song was produced by Blacks over here. before i encountered English Rugby, i wasn't familiar with any Whites using that song. it's in my church hymnal, yet i haven't heard it sung there.
i think it's fine for people to sing songs created by other races, yet i'm not sure how people in england heard about the song in the first place. also the song is very religious, and thus i was a bit surprised to find a rugby team using it. it sounds like something that a baptist or pentecostal would sing.

exactly, i'm not saying wether it was good or bad but saying they shouldn't be ALLOWED to sing it just coz they're white is in itself racist. And just for good measure i though it was quite good.

Awesome harmony, great vocals, not too loud with precussion. Not to mention a beautiful song. I know nothing about rugby but if you guys want to use this as your anthem it doesn't bother me. Wouldn't mind hearing it more often...
I find it offensive that England took this song and named it as their "Rugby Anthem." It's a spiritual/inspirational gospel used by black people in America during times of slavery and also civil rights. Taking it as an "anthem" is almost a bit racist.

This is a honorific version of the song. Do you realize it's a slave song? Jesus Christ.........

The reason why it has stuck as an English sports anthem is because we we're the first country to outlaw slavery.. and proud of it.
The first time it was used in English rugby was to salute a black player in the late 80's.

It was not meant to be racist because rugby is enjoyed by all sorts of races and classes. The reason is below from wikipedia
