  • balls of steel

  • Oh god, There was an antlion guard on the rooftops

  • gráficos incríveis .-.

  • shit half life 2 was the crysis of back then!!

  • Very glossy textures

  • HDR+Good Graphic Card=BAD ASS GRAPHIC!BRING IT ON! =D

  • JESUS DICK

  • I think: The best engine of 2004 :)!

  • whys there no shiny textures in half life 2 now? i liked the shinyness of the game

  • Better than Black Ops, Even In 2003

  • I wish the real game was like this.

  • @oortdoug It is better than this

  • @supergamer1221 no its not. The lighting is not a s good,

  • omg antlion guard on the roof top

  • @RedDotRampage 7 months and this comment still makes me laugh

  • Now all they need is use this lighting in episode 3 , water, grass, trees but less cartoony from dota 2, some new sound effects, new models for wood and concrete, reaction to shots from bullets from enemies or better reactions and some new breakable object physics as in more detail,

  • looks better than crysis on max

  • Ha-ha, in 2003 Valve showed us Episode 1 engine then ripped HDR off and simplifed lightning. I hate this.

  • I really hate it when all people do is make things shinier.... Doesn't improve anything. Makes it unrealistic and annoying too. These shingles wouldn't have so much luster in real life.

  • @asdfghj38559 It's just an old tech demo from 2003. If you played the retail version of Half-Life 2, those graphical effects are not in there.

  • @asdfghj38559 YEAH YEAH YEAH SHINE SHINE its all they want to have an orgasm with their freak mind! LOL BUT... i dont understand how they really do it... they just augment the range of the light rendering to unnatural levels?!... THAT is really freak lol

  • @asdfghj38559 First few times I saw HDR I thought it felt very cozy. First game I played with HDR (HL2) had some closed areas with light emitting from outside much like in the first section in this video. It delivers a different feeling, I agree that HDR is mostly bad but there's some good things with it.

  • @asdfghj38559 It just rained.

  • @asdfghj38559 Finally someone who fucking agrees. :O

  • @asdfghj38559 The reason why its ugly is because the maps in hl2 dont have dynamic cubemaps and cubemaps are reflections thats why it looks bad

  • @halo22222q Tell me 1 game that has dynamic cubemaps

  • @vRussianSPY

Crysis 2 as far as I heard.

  • @asdfghj38559 Or when developers put filters on everything and say it's *art.*

  • @asdfghj38559 In the final release of the game the shingles do not have reflective properties (at all), they were used in this demo to show off the source engines reflective capabilities.

  • This video is showing a potential of source engine but they can't use it in 2004 cuz of weak pc's imagine what will we see in ep3 ^^

  • my hl2 dont look like that .... far..

  • Wow Directx 9 and Source engine Still rocks better than black ops and crysis 2 Congrats...You made me another Lover of source engine ^^

  • Its is one of the final stages of Half Life 2 Beta.

  • there was HDR back in 2003.... omg

  • @Latvietis96 No

  • Lol ? that was form 2003 ? AMAZING

  • in 2003 there were weak pc's :/

  • Even in 2011 it still looks great.

  • Valve should make more games on Source Engine

  • @NanosoftRussia all of their games since half life 2 are on source

  • @NanosoftRussia they make all their games on this same engine. including left for dead 1 and 2

  • @NanosoftRussia Every game since this tech demo has been on the Source engine :)

  • @NanosoftRussia There are lots of games on source engine, but not from valve - Dark Messiah Of might and magic - my favorite RPG until now (skyrim), Dishonored - will come out next year, and many others.

  • @m44ever How about Dota 2?

  • VALVe FTW!!!!!Fuck IW fuck Treyarch just fuck any other game software developer!

  • I think source engine is the most realistic of all engines...it looks so natural...like it's real world!!...love source engine...love Half Life 2

  • VALVE = HD GAMES FOR SHIT PCS

  • @rihard20000 True...mine is shit and i play on max! :D

  • This reminds me how mch my computer is a piece of crap.

  • Now if only Valve got rid of those ugly lightmaps.

  • @kevlar60442 what do you mean?

  • @supergamer1221 All of the environmental shadows in this game are done by static lightmaps, which are pre-rendered and do not have an effect on static props and NPCs, making it look unnatural, compared to the dynamic shadowmaps of Tech 4, UE3, CryEngine, Frostbite, Refractor 2, and nearly every other game engine of the 6th and 7th generations. Vanilla HL2's lightmaps are also rendered with a very low lightmap scale, causing the shadows to also look absurdly soft.

  • @kevlar60442 Yeah Yeah I know...but Source is A REALLY OLD ENGINE...Also,I prefer source rather than Cryengine 2 and 3 . Why? My PC Is a piece of %£$%&$,thats why...

  • @supergamer1221 It's just as old as Refactor 2, CryEngine 1, and id Tech 4, all of which have proper lighting and really nice dynamic shadows. Sorry, I realize that Source is catered towards low-end PCs, but I get a little butthurt when I see Valve not use the Source Engine to it's fullest potential.

  • @kevlar60442 Yes,I'd like that too...But if they did that...I wouldn't be able to play this masterpiece...something Which I dont want...Also, my pc is not updateable and the parts cost way too over-budget for me

  • @kevlar60442 fullest potential = dear esther i guess?

watch it on youtube if you dont know what i mean.

    *sniff* MAKE HL3 WITH THAT!

  • @alonalon777 Dear Esther is beautiful artistically, but it's very basic technically. Now the Cinematic Mod or Ivan's secrets... THOSE are mods that push the Source engine to the limits.

  • @supergamer1221 build a new one then XD

  • @willeyboy2 The parts here cost way over budget I cant afford them

  • i love this graphics engine : )

  • @Jigsaw5999999999 Tech demos always look better than the actual game.

  • @kevlar60442 Perhaps - but not far off, in this case. Actually, I think it looks better now on my Radeon HD 5670 than it does in that video (and the difference between the Radeon and my last card, a GeForce 7300LE, is astounding, as I found tonight - might as well be two totally different game engines)

  • @ogrejd Huh, for some reason I replied to the wrong person in the above comment. Anyways, there's only so much you can improve visual quality from just a graphics card. These cubemaps and bump mapping got axed in the shipped copy and an improved graphics card isn't going to improve anything besides the Framerate, AA quality, and the Direct X level. To get the technical looks of this video right in the game, you're gonna need mods.

  • @kevlar60442

I bet you used a Geforce FX series card right?

  • @kawaiifreak860 2X GTX55ti. Before that, an HD4670. I run the Source engine at max and average 250 FPS. The OB engine improved things somewhat, but the game still doesn't look as good as this.

  • would be awesome with high res. textures and directx 11 !!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I swear to God the game doesn't actually look this good...

  • I love how this looks like it was made in 2007 when it was made in 2003. Can't wait to see what Valve comes out with in 2012 that looks like it was made in 2016 O_o

  • @XKHA0Z

HL3 won't be as amazing as HL2 was at the time because it will be made on consoles' terms.

  • @avatarion No, Valve is too dedicated to the PC market to dumb down HL3.

  • @XKHA0Z Anything is possible.

  • It's not the power of the engine, IT'S HOW YOU USE IT!

  • Damn source engine wich is modified goldsource wich is modified quake 1 engine wich is modified Doom Id tech 1 engine wich is wolfenstain 3d engine! crap damnit it's based on old tech and it will never be compareble to new (from scratch) engines that use modern tech.

  • @uratoko its extremely modified there is barely any Quake left in the source engine, and absolutely no id tech

and the engine is updated with new tech at every game release. almost nothing of the source engine isn't made by valve they took quake and modified it to a unrecognizable state and took Havok physics and modified it to the point that Havok based future versions off of it.

  • @warrengmoore all of that is correct and source engine sure is good...but it has problems with dynamic shadows(your weapon gets darker when under a shadow but you cant see that shadow on the weapon and there are some other stuff and it really slows down source for example they can use it but only when they want to make it an important thing like in portal 2 in some dark levels) and there are some other signs of an aged engine...

  • @uratoko most people don't pay attention to if their character casts a shadow or not but that's actually a decision of the developers.

  • A great engine, It doesn't need a great hardware, and it has still lots of potential!

  • @roblox1711 maybe cuz not many people had a good pc?

  • looks like somebody forgot to write buildcubemaps

  • It looks nice but it needs real time reflections cause cubemaps are a little bit nasty

  • Source engine is my favorite engine

  • this is like the cry engine back then. it still looks kewl today

  • it's fuckin quake 1 engien beyyatch!!!

  • THIS is why I am not upgrading my OS...

I am perfectly happy with DX 9.C, and I could care less about Battlefield 3...

It's not the engine, it's the developer...

Only valve can take 6 Year old tech, and make it look beautiful.

  • @PinkFloydGuitarist who cares less about battlefield 3...when you can have battlefield 1942!

  • @RedDotRampage lol its a pun

  • @PinkFloydGuitarist Yes, Source is the best engine ever. It's 8 years old now, it can make a game look photorealistic and run perfectly on a computer from 2005.Imagine this situation in 2020.This goes to show the big lie that hardware and software manufacturers are perpetrating. That this is achievable in 10 years from now, only with rocket PCs on your desk and super-ultra-poorly-optimized game engines. If more people would know the truth, this industry would fall.

  • @PinkFloydGuitarist "only valve"

    "only"

    everyone

almost every ocnsole games are based on 6 year old technology dude.

  • At first I thought it was Half-Life 2 in the cry-engine... Then I looked at what year it was posted...

  • @brandon9271 ikr, its stupid that they take out all these amazing things

  • @brandon9271 why the fuck doesn't the game actually look like this tech demo :D

  • looks better than Black ops

  • @SandstonRedneck2 what doesnt look better thank black cocks

  • @SandstonRedneck2 Black Ops is running on ancient quake3 engine. Obviously Source eng. >>> Quake3 eng.

  • but does it blend?

  • Comment removed

  • Classic...

  • alright alright... late night... where's the bathroom... overhere... hey there antlion buddy... disco thing...? man im trippin balls gigglegigglegiggle

  • what are you doing admiring high definition graphics? combine are chasing you!!!

  • wtf whyy he moving slow he looks like playing in the console...

  • @hakanefe43

To hear the sound diffrence and there is no reson to rush...

  • DAMN this is so awesome

fuck crysis this is the best

this game can run with onboard graphics and still looks great

  • @xeonhl2 Crysis 2 looks really well with bad graphic cards^^

  • this was probably 2003 and 2004's crysis

  • @baconfury44

Not really. When it came out players got much higher fps than someone in 2007 with Crysis.

  • @capatais777 It's kinda stupid to compare a game that has won many awards rather than crysis. Crysis isn't even meant to game with it's just displaying it's good looking engine for other games.

  • kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

    crysis is much better

  • @capatais777 Yeah man but you need a fucking super computer to run it. I have 512mb nvidea video card, a 2.0gb intel core duo and 4gb on ram n it runs really slow, this beauty runs sweet and novody can belive that its an old game from 7 years a go and thats is way still rocks !!!

  • @capatais777 "kkkkkkkkkkkkkkk crysis is much better" DUMBASS! These two games cannot be compared.

  • @benzzodude crysis graphics very better

  • @capatais777 does not mean the game is better

  • @benzzodude wtf?

crysis is more nice more beaultiful more nice map and gameplay for me

  • @benzzodude and crysis more better history

  • was this originally a cut beta map (polished up with DX9 effects for this demonstration) ?

  • @shimmy1984 Yep. only they added a antlion guard and some polishment. that and its also a Cube map test.

  • @brandon9271 but the thing is, It's the same engine running this vid. so one could have a game that looked like this using the awesome source engine!!

  • @nathanwalker462 The version of the source engine that got shipped with HL2 was neutered compared to this video.. either that or the texture, shaders, etc were downgraded. 7 years later, top of the line PC and graphics card and HL2 still doesn't look as good as these tech demos. Hell, I wouldnt dont if this was prerendered just to generate hype..

  • @brandon9271 You sir are very ignorant, I map and work with materials in the source engine all the time and I fully understand its potential. This map was infact, just a tech demo, the reason the rooftops arent all "shiney" in the actual game is that Valve wanted City 17 to look more worn out and grungey, the bump and cubemap functionality has been present in every version of Source right back to day 1. The environment artists simply don't always choose to employ EVERY effect ALL the time.

  • @RushFreak2 riiight.. I guess they wanted the antlions to look old and worn out as well. Lol NOTHING in the final game looked as good as the tech demo and there's more than just some artistic reason for it.

  • @brandon9271 the antlions are reflective even in the 2004 release they were your point is invalid

  • @warrengmoore they weren't that damn glossy as in this demo! My guess is they had to lower the resolution of the normal maps, cube maps or some other textures in the game and thus make things less shiney so it wasn't as obvious.

  • @brandon9271 well sometimes companies will make effects more obvious in a demo to show them off but then change them in the full product but it kind of depends on the scene

  • Well now its been updated to the Left 4 dead 2 source engine so u can see those shiny roof tiles now :).

  • damit. I fell in love with the shine/phong

  • That's what the updated version looks like now... (2010!)

    lazy Valve...

  • @Headshotgod nope.avi

3d liquid physics, thats very unfamiliar in gaming right now.

portal 2 was the first one i knew that had that.

it wasnt really BIG, but it was there, and they should put it in L4D2, BECAUSE to fix the GODDAMN COLLIDING SPIT OF THE SPITTER, THAT JUST DOESNT DO ANY DAMAGE TO THE SURVIVORS! FUCK DAMNIT GODDANAISDUFGJIAOFGJADFIOGJA

  • you now when valve develop this they didnt have pc that could max out this :)))) thats how old are this game and how unbelivebel are the graphics

  • What about EP3 ? DX11 would be awesome ^^

  • im sad that still nowadays valves actual games dont look that good.

  • And it's not gay. Balls aren'n touching

  • why source engine looks very realistic on screenshots and videos? but when playing the game it doesn't look so good O_o

  • @plandercozeron Uhh,get a batter PC!

  • @tonihomi my pc is ok

  • Hey somebody play this game with this settings ???

    i have a computer p4 1.8ghz, 512mb ddr2, geforce mx440 agp 4x 64mb 128 bit, with min settings and play this game in 2003

then i buy a new videocard like gigabyte radeon 9600pro 256 mb ddr2 and with pixel shader 3, i see in this video there is pixel shader 5 or better

  • this is e3 footage, though i dont know when this was made but it was probbably before the incedent of the hacker that stole the files

  • @Gzero91

The guy was arrested, and he wanted to work for VALVe.

  • Comment removed

  • really awesome.. i still think's that the graphics in 2004 that the source engine is running on kicks ass

  • WHy isn't there that wind sound in real Half Life 2 O_o

  • @isokessu there is

  • Alcatraz presentation ?

  • I want a pet antlion

  • Source engine is so well made. The graphics were AMAZING for 2003-4 and it didn't require a monster graphics chip to run. and even today, Source Engines graphics still are good enough to compete with modern games.

  • HL2, a technology breakthrough, and amazing story and gameplay... best. game. ever.

  • bad that the game dosent look that god

  • @tiagom135 this is 7 years old. they were the best graphics when this game was released. and the amazing part? you didnt need a super computer to run them.

  • DIREXT X SUX FUCKEN ALWAYS HAVE TO UPDATE THIS SHIT

  • @AnthonyXD0 It's all good for graphics.

  • @AnthonyXD0 Ditrect X does not suck Windows Vista and 7 Suck and i would say Microsoft SUCKS!!!!!!!! they are not giving me any updates on XP ...

  • 1:19 why is there an Antlion Gaurd on the roof?

  • @ureteralclock to show how envmaps work

  • @ureteralclock To confuse you.

  • that was just like 5 years ago ...... this is going 2 fast !!!

  • i have half life 2, direct x 10 and a nvidia high graphics card, and what im seeing is 6 years ago they have better graphics than mine, what the heck

  • this game can be considered as old now but still its graphics are better than a lot of today's games, and still does not require a great hardware either, and also the game is quite cheap altough this quality of work. this is why i love valve.

  • @turboZenci The HL2 graphics is not better than todays graphics, although it is very impressive for 2002-2004.

  • @123pureownage What he means is the graphics are better then some of todays games... not every single game.

  • @larlar752000 I know that, but this kind of graphics can't be better than some of todays game graphics (except for MW2).

  • @123pureownage Actualy MW2 Uses Very Simple Detail and really doesnt have Dynamic Shadowing. Theres not much work into the level design based on Dynamic Props. You cant really compare Mw2 to half-life

  • the final game didn't looks this good. If we look at teh direct x 10 videos, they look far superior to our actual dx10 games.

  • 7 years old graphics... still looks awesome

  • @DiePoente Anything that is crap back then wont be crap now

  • @DiePoente because its valve. Vlve is awesome

  • @DiePoente Thanks valve for programming eveything in pure c++

  • @DiePoente well, they've updated it

  • @Jacc0s

Yes, but this video is from 2003

  • @DiePoente Better than today's Call of Duty..

  • @RoboTHUG2 also better than tommorows.

  • @DiePoente its now 8! lol

  • That ant lion guard looks bored as fuck.

  • Jesus christ, and that is only 2003! God damn that's been made with hand of a god.

  • Possible reaction:

    1:17 - OHMYDOG!WHATISTHATTHING?

OH, oh... yeah, it just an antlion guard... very typical creature on the rooftops on alien controlled cities... Well... nothing much else to see here.

  • @LordVidra

yeah! Its from 2003 and this game only requires pixlel shader 1!!! And barley takes no space on your hardware. The games of 2010 requires about 7-20GB of space and requires pixel shader 3 or 4 and STILL the graphics arent much better

    the world fails.

  • yeah nice graphics but the fact that these graph. isn't in the game is shit....

  • Lol @ random antlion guard

  • @DesertRat22225 lol @ random balls!

  • @DJacKnifeAlpha xDDD

  • yea its all too shiny. not every dman surface should be shiny
