  • Prothro.. what could of been...

  • Prothro.. what could of been...

  • damn that is loud. ready for next season.

  • Built 80% of offense around Prothro.....not smart

to start with;but even WORSE when there was

    no "plan b"!

Fate has smiled on the Tide lately and that's a

    relief to Tide fans everywhere!

  • football is dangerous u know the risk when u get out there its not the coaches fault shit happens but it was a bad coaching choice

  • WHAT A BEATDOWN THIS GAME WAS. When Florida wins, it's cuz Bama let them hang around. When Bama wins, it's a route

  • I'm a gator fan who was at this game. Bryant Denny was sooooo loud that afternoon, and I was at the top corner where the noise usually isn't even that bad.

  • This shows the world 3 things

    1. This is what happens when Brodie Croyle gets protection.

    2. This is what would have happened every game if Mike Shula wasnt such a fucking moron.

    3. This would have been one of the shining moments of a HEISMAN award winning season for Prothro and Bama's 13th National Title.

Even though Im a Texas fan, I live in Alabama and that year, because of Prothro's efforts he put into the few games he played, I was all about Rollin' With The Tide.

  • I don't believe Shula was trying to run up the score. My goodness... didn't Tennessee come back from 20+ down against LSU that same season and win? At Baton Rouge? Gracious, injuries happen. Would people have felt better if Prothro got injured in the first quarter as opposed to the fourth? It was fourth down with about 9:00 remaining in the game... starters from BOTH teams were still playing.. not just Prothro

  • that made no sense. they were up 31-3, just because tennessee did it AFTER this game, with LSU's starters out because they were up big, doesnt justify Shula doing it here. of course UF had theirs in, they were losing. Prothro, his STAR receiver should have been sat. No mater what argument you try and put across. The guy could have won the Heisman that year.

  • What does winning the Heisman have to do with winning a football game? As I stated prior, would it have been any different if he were injured in the first quarter as opposed to the fourth? You're making a point on hindsight. Can you honestly say you were screaming at your TV for starters to be out of the game at that point? Brodie was in there too. Remember, he was hurt in a blowout the previous year right before halftime. What about him? It's unfair to criticize Shula for an unfortunate inj

  • What was unfortunate was Shula being stupid enough to keep his best player in. The point I'm making is a coach with common sense would take his best player out of the game at that time. Of course Brodie was in, how many times did you see a backup QB in a Bama game that year? Almost none, MAYBE two games against cake teams. A fourth down pass play when you are up BIG in the 4th? Really? Even that shows how stupid Shula is. You're basically helping my side of the argument with everything you say.

  • Florida had NO CHANCE to win that game.. NONE. I had predicted that before the season even began. I knew they were not going to throw the ball against that experienced defense, and Leak is not one who likes to run. So, they were basically going to be one dimensional and I KNEW that would be one of 'Bama's easier games. The only game which concerned me on their schedule was Tennessee... because of their running game... and it was a tough game.

  • The fourth down throw made NO sense BECAUSE of what you said, theyre one dimensional. They didnt score a TD all game, you think WITH YOUR STARTERS IN they wouldve miraculously scored one then? no one argues with Shulas logic because there was none, it was a stupid decision and he paid for it with a mans would-be amazing career. Tennessee's run game did nothing, as you can see. and without Prothro, Bamas pass game was locked because he wasnt there to create openings for the other receivers.

  • I subjectively said Florida had no chance before the game even started. So, using my logic, why play Prothro at all? Using your logic as well. We both agree Florida had no chance, right? So, why even play Prothro for the game... just when with defense and the running game. I don't believe in blaming injuries on coaches unless there is some drastic mismanagmement... I do not characterize this as drastic.. .just unfortunate.

  • I thought 'Bama had the best team in the country that year.. they shut down Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl too.... Shula may not have been reading for a head coaching position.. however, the Prothro injury was just an unfortunate incident. Very dangerous to blame injuries in that manner on a coach. For goodness sakes.. it was a fourth down pass play... Florida was blitzing... this is all hindsight criticism.

  • I have no idea what you are talking about. He couldve won the Heisman, but he was hurt. Winning the game has nothing to do with it. It would have been different because it wouldnt have been a rout at all, do you even know what you're arguing about? If he had been hurt in the 1t quarter, UF probably wouldve been the ones up. And Meyer wouldve put in his second team. Which is what Shula should have done.

  • You are putting this whole game on Prothro.. Keith Brown caught a touchdown too... the defense had interceptions and held Florida to a field goal, Darby ran for over 100 yards... 'Bama was the BETTER TEAM.. .get off the Prothro stuff. Yes, he was a playmaker for them and took their offense to a level it did not have once he was hurt... but injuries are part of the game. The fourth down play made sense because it would have been a long field goal or a short punt.. .no one argued with the logic

  • that TD was great but that didnt win the game for them. Prothro made gamebusting plays all over that game. Darby had blocks by his receivers including one where Prothro blocked two guys in one hit and sprung the TD. everytime you say something, it proves that Shula was stupid to leave him in. No one is talking about the game, this is about the injury. The fact that UF had no chance, the fact they were one dimensional, proves that by that time, it shouldve been game over for Prothro.

  • I felt Florida had no chance BEFORE the game... you are talking about what happened in the FOURTH QUARTER. I'm sure you didn't go into the game feeling the Gators had no chance... Florida was favored by a couple of points. Prothro and the Heisman is immaterial... blaming his injury on Shula is wrong though.

  • The game was a blowout... however, I don't recall hearing any major criticism at the time. Of course, I was not around you during the game.

  • Prothro's injury was 100% on the Alabama staff. Shula for leaving him in a game that had already been decided, and the medical staff for criminally mishandling his injury. You clearly have absolutely no knowledge of the situation and are talking out of your ass. I for one was criticizing Shula before Prothro got hurt. Everyone I was sitting with was too. He had no reason to leave the starters in at that point. Even for a team that had little depth the game was over at that point.

  • To 'Bsaint91', you blame Tebow's injury on Meyer? Do you remember that Tennessee came back from 20+ points down to beat LSU, AT Baton Rouge? Before you attempt to insult keep your viewpoint in perspective. Any time you start blaming coaches for injuries in a game you are going down a very dangerous path. Again, what if this SAME injury occurred in the first quarter? Then what? As for the staff mishandling the injury, once his leg was shattered his career was over. He wasn't coming back

  • Are you trying to be this ignorant or what? Tennessee had an entire half to come back from 3 touchdowns behind, not 8 minutes to come back from 4 touchdowns. Coaches are certainly to blame for injuries to players who shouldn't be in the game. And yes, the medical staff did a very poor job with Prothro. It has nothing to do with him "coming back" either. He almost lost his leg due to their negligence. This may come as a shock to you, but it's a good idea to disinfect open wounds.

  • Do you realize that MRSA and other infections are most common IN hospitals? For the obvious reasons... yes, it's negligence and, hence, you have medical malpractice cases. As for Tennessee... unless I'm mistaken, they made up ground in predominantly the fourth quarter, not the entire second half. Unless you know the exact time frame of their comeback.

  • As for the Tennessee comeback, I was there(crying at the end) and it was Les Miles' 1st SEC game and the whole game plan for the 2nd half was to run the ball to run the clock. Including the hail mary at the end we threw the ball 3 times after halftime. It wasn't about players it was about poor coaching descisions.

  • Bsaint91 and TexasMade 20... I stand corrected regarding the Prothro injury... thought it happened on the landing... had forgotten about the Florida player falling on his leg causing the break. You two were right. I stil lthink it's unfortunate though because, had Prothro not been hurt on that play, it would not have been a big deal. However, the injury occurred and the rest is history.

  • See I'm the same way, just opposite. I wasn't and still aren't criticizing the staff because sometimes they just happen. I'm sure Prothro wanted to be in at that point. I know it's not HIS choice, but nearly all football staffs keep starters in waaaaaay too long. Saban does the same thing. The only reason he isn't criticized by you is because he hasn't lost a star player.

  • Hey 32nirvana...do you mean the kind of KARMA that happens when you celebrate another breaking his leg into? If so, enjoy it when it comes back around. =) Roll Tide.

  • I agree. It was a beautiful thing.

  • then he broke his leg trying to run it up...KARMA CUNTS LOL..career over..couldnt happen to a better guy

  • It's not Prothro's fault that Shula left him in the game with such a lead...When a coach tells you to play, you play...And if you want to talk about running up the score, you need to look at the Gators...Because they do it every chance they get...

  • Nirvana, how's that Prothtro trying to run up the score? I blame Mike Shula for that, Prothro was probably one of our best Wide Receivers of all time.

I agree Mike Shula was trying to run the score up, but you can't blame Prothro for what he did. Prothro definitely had a great NFL career ahead of him though, makes me sad everytime I think about it.

  • That's my single favorite moment of Alabama football since the '99 season. Thanks for posting.

  • this is when all hell broke loose
