  • What parts of this can and cant be done in the intro version...Its all I could afford at the moment

  • how come your piano loop is doubled in arrangement view? I cant seem to get that done :()

  • thanks for the tips!

  • hey there isn't a link in the dicription to your free ableton ebook. um help?

  • I may be blind, but I can't find the link to the e-book =/

  • Vespers, man, you are a bad ass. Every tutorial I take blows my mind. Can I email you requests? How should I process my bass?

  • fantastic tutorial mate subscribed :)

  • this tutorial is so gangster i dont even know what to do with myself. I'm going to owe a lot of credit to vespers in the end

  • howd you get from 1:48-1:49?

  • @DudeImWayBetter Zoom in. :)

  • how do you favorite videos again?

  • Thanks for the fantastic tips. Good work.:)

  • I actually learned a lot here by watching this. Thank you. ^_^

    I'm also going to Subscribe.

  • Thanks for the video man. I'm a hardware geek in need of a good software platform for live use(pun not intended). But after watching Video's like this I relise that Ableton is alot more useful than just a static sampler.

  • Great video. Thanks for sharing the techniques.

  • Hey I watched this video about a year ago and it really helped me finish a track, tried to post the link to it but I guess youtube doesn't like me doing that sort of thing.

  • Nice video man! Thanks! I'm just now getting my feet wet in Ableton and I just learned alot. Appreciate it!

  • Ive always wondered if different DAW Audio engines differed in terms of quality. Would be interesting to find any studies on this. Perhaps someone with lots of time and money can gather up all the DAWs, make an identical track in them, and then invert the phase after exporting. If they are the same, should be able to cancel each other out. Nonetheless, I have heard many warm sounding tracks made in Ableton and any "cheap plastic" sounds is an error by the producer or his/her tools.

  • Hey vespers, I just wanna personally thank you for taking the time for creating all these videos. I've been making my own house music and I'd like you to know you're videos are part of the reason I have much better control over Ableton. Peace out man.. and If you got the time, do check out my page and soundcloudDOTcom/vmprmyth.

  • i can´t stand ableton live you hear directly what tunes got created with ableton live this cheap plastic sound it got rather use reason or mach 5 or something advanced there is so much better stuff

  • @konjunktion26 I hear this type of comment from people from time to time. Usually when people say Ableton has a cheap sound, it's from users who haven't gotten it set up properly. I've learned a lot about Ableton since creating this video. Primarily this sound is created by producing with low quality settings active and warping everything unnecessarily. Ableton is perfectly capable of sounding as clean and professional as most big DAWs, you just need to know how to set it up right.

  • @DJVespers

EVERY TUNE I HEAR FROM EVERY PERSON WHO USES ABLETON HAS THIS CHEAP SOUND. I NEVER USE ABLETON BECAUSE IT HAS A CHEAP SOUND THATS COLORING THE AUDIO SIGNAL. I NEVER WOULD LET ABLETON GET CLOSE TO MY MUSIC.

  • @konjunktion26 If that's what you think, I find it curious why you're watching and commenting on videos on an Ableton channel. If you're just here to rant without backing up anything you're saying with specifics, I'll invite you to go somewhere else. If you're interested in talking specifics and having a respectful conversation, let's chat.

  • @DJVespers Hey. when i switch from seesion to arangment view some of the tracks are grey and will only take sounds from session view and wont play whats in arrangment. help?

  • @konjunktion26 Cheap like yo mamma!

  • @konjunktion26 lmao, do you really think, quality of a sound can depend on the program? Use your hands and don't talk too much.

  • @konjunktion26 sorry but you haven't got a clue about what you're saying. And what are you doing watching this it's an ableton tutorial, duh !

  • @PeresD

i got no clue what i´m talking about? i´m a audio mastering engineer and i did a lot reviews about the signal routing and everything of different audio editors and ableton live is a mess and you don´t know anything about me or what i study or in what studios i worked already so you better should watch your tutorials to learn the basics from beginners who upload their videos while people like me create audio plugins for audio engineering solutions.

  • @konjunktion26 Let's rein in the egos here folks. This is a forum to discuss Ableton as it relates to audio production, not to beat our chests like apes bro. If you are a mastering engineer then you've probably heard of Tarekith. He's designed soundsets for Access Virus and is one of the most talented engineers on the planet. He masters all of my music and he also uses Live to produce. Check out his posts on the sound quality and transparency of Live on the Live forums.

  • @DJVespers

I don´t like the way Ableton Live sounds. End of discussion.

  • @konjunktion26 I think you've made your own personal opinion abundantly clear now. However, seeing as you've done nothing to back it up with specifics, research or examples, and are relying solely on personal conjecture and wide sweeping statements, then, with respect, I don't see how you can expect any of us to put much stock in it.

  • @DJVespers

stop it ok?? you know nothing aboput me or what i did so stop your paranoid stupid bullshit talking!!! i just said that i hate the way ableton live sounds and you got to respect this and i´m not the only one who says this so stop your bullshit nonsens talking i got better things to do than talking with little children about things that they don´t understand at all!

  • @konjunktion26 I give everyone the benefit of the doubt and encourage them to have respectful conversations here, so I'll give you one warning. I will not tolerate this type of attitude on my channel. Discussion, all good! Disrespectful, negative trash talking and personal attacks towards other members of this community, or myself, no thankyou. If you're intent on spreading a negative and argumentative vibe, I will ban you. I hope you decide to embrace constructive and amicable attitude.

  • @konjunktion26 LOL Ableton is amazing! you obviously are a idiot. hate the way its sounds? obviously you cant produce. you must hate the way you sound.

  • @konjunktion26 Then post some of your music up here so we can rip the shit out of your work. I mean hear what your explaining.

  • great vid vespers thanks for sharing your knowledge !

  • @konjunktion26 ever think it might just be the artists you are listening to? Ableton is WIDELY respected dude.

  • cool tricks man..thanks..gonna use some of them in my next track...

  • This is really great! Thanks!

  • Thank you for sharing your insight. Keep up the great work!!!

  • very nice. i didn't know. what i want to know is how can you transpose your midi instrument in ableton? or in midi files instead of transposing all midi parts 1 r 2 notes down, i just want to transpose the midi instrument as a hole some semitones.

how do you do that in ableton? so simple and yet not so obvious in ableton as it should be.

if anyone can help me out I much apreciate it

  • brilliant tutorial

  • nice tecniques here!

  • @AmadasTwist Fades were introduced in ableton 8 , youll have to draw volume curves manually

  • I have a question.. Let's say I create a melody.. How can I make that Midi clip a waveform so that I can manipulate it like you have in your tutorials?

Seems like an obvious first step that I do not really understand.

Once I get a waveform, than I can actually split and slice.

    Thanks!

  • @KooLmeTs21 You bounce it down to audio using the freeze and flatten function or resample it. Cheers!

  • @DJVespers What does freezing the track do/ how do I get rid of the (freeze) in the title of each clip, or would I need to manually rename them all?

  • vespers your shits hot and i really appreciate your tutorial videos maing, good work... im foollowing you on soundcloud

  • @AmadasTwist same. I assume its a 7 thing not pc.

  • really great stuff, man. i've been having a creative block lately and this was just what i needed to get back in the flow. thank you so much. keep 'em coming!

  • btw: i actually used this technique recently on a remix, i know people end up making douchbag comments, but I just want to leave my appreciation for your wok

  • @johnnybigoode Hey mate. Thanks for the comment. Glad you were able to use this on a remix. Post it up on Youtube if you can. Cheers!

  • @johnnybigoode Me too. I made a sweet stir fry with the wok ;P

  • Very helpful <3

  • @7oas7y Glad you dig. Cheers!

  • Any chance of you doing a tutorial on actually putting together a glitchhop beat? This is one thing I find very hard to find online (noone seems keen on divulging how a glitch hop beat is put together).

  • @torment3d I just did one on how to write hip hop beats in Live and it's pretty much a glitch hop beat. Check that one out. Cheers!

  • I Have been a big fan of your tutorials for some time now, and I must say im gratefull. I figured I would give something back to the community by sharing my personal tips and tricks in a video tutorial. May I ask what software you're using to get such clean and responsive flow in your tutorials?

    Greetings from Denmark :-)

    -Johannes

  • @Joebdammed Thanks bro. Much appreciated. Nice work on the giving back attitude. I use Camtasia for Mac.

  • I have a question are we only able to edit midi clips in arrange view ? The reason I ask is I have an audio clip in it right now and make a selection of an area and put a loop region on it when I click to play the selection it starts from the beginning of the song and has a transparent white color covering the whole track it did not do this with my midi clip I'm a bit baffled

    Thanks

  • @divakaneva You can edit midi clips in both arrange view and session view. If you're in arrange view, also make sure you click the "back to arrangement" button if it's highlighted red. That's probably your issue. Cheers!

  • @DJVespers Ok Thanks that wasn't it but it's a good thing to know I think I forgot to split the clip 1st I really don't know what I did but its working how I want it now the interface is quite easy in some areas and very non intuitive in others

    Cheers!!

  • Blowing my mind here, Mr. Vespers.

    Thank you.

  • @enjoynathaniel Thanks mate. Appreciate the comment.

  • wow cool, thanks

  • If you are placing warp markers say 2 bars apart from eachother, Instead of placing 1 marker at a time in the whole song.Is it possibile to place a few markers in the begining and then copy and paste the rest?If so how?

  • @cast390 Thanks for the question. Live's warp markers don't work like that. You need to warp either automatically (which usually guesses wrong), or manually. Check out my video titled #1 Power Warping Technique, it explains how to warp accurately and fast. Cheers!

  • @cast390 As far as I'm aware, warp markers must be added manually, or automatically based on Live's transient detection engine. Don't think you can copy and paste them.

  • thanks for share!!!!

  • @lucasbarbuzzi You're welcome mate.

  • Great information...thanks for posting

  • Excellent info, much appreciated.

  • thanks for the time, really helpful video and free.. thanks

  • About producing ... the most important and main factor is TO KNOW the program ... like a guitar ... you have to know every tone each fret make ... well you don't have to know that actually --- but if you do, your melodies will be slightly better and more creative :) this is very important when it comes to Ableton and similar producing software ... if you don't know the program in detail, you can do nothing special ... :) Thank you DJVespers

  • great work....thanks a lot !

  • @deejaysoulution Glad to help out. Thanks for the comment!

  • @DJVespers

meanwhile I can't get enough of your leesons :))

  • @deejaysoulution Sweet! Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for more.

  • "If you hold CMD on mac, probably ALT on a PC"

    ...

COME ON. I know designers and hipsters LOVE mac, but W T F?

    CMD=CTRL

  • @johnnybigoode Don't expect me to know anything about something that doesn't matter at all to me. I know my tool set and not much else. Glad someone made the translation. Thanks.

  • @johnnybigoode ur a dumbass. he said hold option not hold command. you should prolly make sure you know what ur saying before talkin so much shit. "hipsters and designers LOVE mac"? gimme a break

  • @SoSoImmaDoMe

    really?

I made a trolling and retarded comment 6 months ago and there's still people taking it seriously?

    Geez...

  • @johnnybigoode Hey kids, let's keep the comments focused on music here in the spirit of learning and practice some acceptance for each other. Happy new year.

  • This is so cool! Exactly what I needed for something do with my next track :)

    Thanks!

  • PS sorry if a bunch of comments appear. I fail at the internet and thought it was not working LOL

  • @lenarst Awesome, can't wait to hear it!

  • How do you get the piano sample in that form? When I save a recording like the piano it saves in midi form. How do you upload it so it shows the sound waves like that?

  • @cleman10 Thanks for the comments and feedback everyone! Much appreciated. For the piano, it's Native Instruments Akoustic Piano. To render it out, simple create a new audio track, set to "resampling" then solo the midi track with the piano instrument, record arm the resampling track, and hit master record, then play. This will resample the audio waveform onto the audio track.

  • @cleman10 create a new audio channel, set it's imput to whatever channel your piano is on, arm the track, hit record on a clip on your new audio channel and hit play on your piano channel, it will then record the audio from your piano channel

  • even for a non-Ableton user (I'm primarily in NI Maschine) this has been really helpful. thanks for the upload.

  • I like your video and way u describe it. I think, for someone who uses Live, it is essential when narrator, while showing the magic on screen "speak out loud commands n' shortcuts".

This is great video once more, thank.full :)

  • after using fruity for years have finally moved onto ableton, have learnt more from these videos than any other tutorials. thank you for the time and effort you have put into these. great work

  • @rattle0ray Cheers and thanks for the comment. Glad to help out.

  • Wow, very cool tutorial, once again Ableton amazes me with its infinite potential.

  • @AppA @jessebrede @macfan30 Thanks for commenting guys. Much appreciated. Keep rocking Live!

  • Good stuff. I like you videos very much. I appreciate the work you've put in. Gold star for you.

  • Thnx big guy nice vids

    I learn a much;)

    Thnx

    Cheers

  • Helpful and inspiring, Thank you!!!

  • Great stuff Vespers thanks for this.

  • dude thank you so much for these videos there really helpfull

  • Someone asked me what I used to record this screencast, but I deleted the comment by accident. I used iShowU HD Pro from Shiny White Box. Great program, for Mac.

  • not exactly "extremely glitchy'.. more like subtle plain editing

  • Did you watch all the videos in the playlist? There are 4. What kind of things are you looking for that were not covered?

  • I think you covered all the techniques well, but the result - particularly in this first video, was not what I would call 'extremely glitchy' ... it was very subtle use of the techniques.

  • Matter of opinion I guess. But if I said "Hey, watch this boring video on plain subtle editing!!!" no one would watch it. LOL. ;)

  • One of the most educating vidz I must say

Can you make vid dedicated to transposing

melodic loops if yes that would rock .....

Live gets cooler each day i fire it up :-)

  • Clearly presented, decent video presentation. Just a note, we're not all Mac users, so try not to conform just to the Macs. 5*

  • Yeah I hear ya. I don't have a PC so I don't even know the shortcuts though. Sorry PCers, gotta look it up in the manual ;)

  • Pretty sure that most commands are the same just command is control button on PC! Keep live-ing!

  • how do i get to this view of the note hits and reverb tails? in my arrangement view the notes are just solid blocks of sound...

    thanks

    jordan

  • In your arrangement view you have to expand the track to see the audio waveform. You do this by clicking on the little triangle that appears just to the left of your track name. By default, when you load Live, the first audio track is called 1 Audio, so check out the little triangle next to it. Otherwise, just zoom in enough that you can see the individual hits and reverb tails. Cheers!

  • is there any way to get view the waveform of midi notes? how can i play a rhythm on my mpk25 and then view the wavelengths of it to glitch it out like this?

  • You can't see the waveform of midi notes, only audio. What you have to do is render out / bounce down you midi to an audio file. You can do this easily in Live by adding an audio track, setting it to resampling, soloing the midi part you want to bounce down and then doing a recording pass. This will record the output of your midi track on the resampling track.
