Here is a question for someone who actually knows how to play one of these things (if anyones out there that is). Is he stretching the rubber at all, or are the notes made mainly by his fingering and his mouth? Also is there anything at all special about the rubber band, other than just being a plain beige rubber band that has been cut, so its a strip? Is there a special technique for holding it?
@frankensteinmoneymac You just pull it taut so that it resembles a (more pliable) reed. There are many possible ways of intonating, since it's simply a matter of changing the amount of vibrating rubber, but Stan seems to have found the easiest and most controllable way. He said himself he had 35 years to work on it though!
@woutertron True....it took me a while just to learn to play the Jaw Harp but I'm pretty good at it now. I am really curious about this 'vibraband' though....So then do I take it that the intonation has nothing to do with physically stretching the band, & it's mainly his mouth & hands that make the notes, or is it a combination of both? It's been a while since I've tried to play one...I've had trouble finding a wide enough rubber band, though I can get some basic noise from smaller ones.
@frankensteinmoneymac It looked like he was changing the band distance ever so slightly to change pitch. I saw him shorten the length a bit towards the end when he hits the low note... Fucking baller! Amazing sir! Simply AMAZING!

It looks like it takes a lot of wind, because his phrases are only about four seconds

fascinating, the sound of it, and how and why it works....
i ve tried it, and i can get different notes, but never as controlable... the vibrato is great, if i trie that, the pitch often jumps...
and beautiful music!

It's a rubber band that's been cut, so that's it's a strip and not a loop. Pretty incredible, no?
