I could only go 50 mph with my converyed 1998 to vxl stampede. So I am thinking about getting a 4x4 and put a 1/8 scale motor and gearing it way up. I wonder how fast out will go before becoming unstable. My converted vxl gets a speed ocilation at 50.
OK i need QUICK answer ! ! im about to buy the traxxas vxl system for my stampede butt !!!! does the motor ever wear out like stop working like the titan 550s?
i tested the speed of my stampede vxl with a 5000mah 11.1 V lipo 30c, and i just reached 76.3kmh with 25/30 gearing...i was driving on a 1km long straight road...so...what's the problem??
I have a problem with my stampede vxl, when it gets up to 3/4's of a throttle it can't keep the front down and my hobby shop told me not to put something at the front of it because the motor will over heat to fast''i see your not having a weight at the front and keeping the front end down going full throttle! what should i do?
@emzan98sandstreamer what do you mean by "safety mode"? If you are referring to the lipo voltage cutoff, then yes, you should use it to prevent over-discharge of your lipo batteries.
@Mw2Gaming123 You should store your lipos at about 3.8V if you're not going to use them for a few days. You don't need to discharge them like old school NiCD batteries. Lipos have no memory effect.
I did the same exact thing with my stampede vxl and geared the same gearing just on a venom 6400 mah 11.1 volt 3 cell lithium polymer battery and got 65 mph out of it!!!!
@rcdude132 Try thunder power they're worth the price and make your truck go like 5 to 7 mph faster then it's top speed estimated by it's manufacture and last for about 3 years until they start going bad! it's a good deal toward any kind of lithium polymer battery reliability out there
@whiteknuckles717 I do Agree, TP. is a really good brand, for the money and the performance,i use the in my Planes and heli's, as well as my Trucks, cars,
Hmm. I put a Hi Energy 7 cell 4500mah pack in my rustler vxl geared 28/86, with suspention lowered all the way down, and I could only get 40. Is my GPS innacurate?
@VideoGamePlayer12 You running nickel a metal battery? if so... theres ur problem... get a nice lipo battery and...you will hit 55+.... gear it right and you hit 75+ in a rustler... Id say you have a huge problem if your going 40 in a rustler and it has a lipo battery... id almost think it was a lemon from the factory
Cool truck and, I alway look at this video before, I got a new stampede vxl for $350 in Dec 25, 2007 and then, I broke the right steering block in first day and which suck and then, I hit 65 once with 3s 6000 li po maxamps. Now, I have a Bandit vxl is the best one ever, I had and then, I hit 76 a twice with 3s 5400 venom and gear was 36/76 and it done that on Dec 24, 2008.
how fast do u think a 8.4 nimh battery will get it or a 9 volt lipo. im new to the rc world but its fun so far and every 1 i talked rc with has been realy helpful and nice i wanna start to race at a local track and not just bash. but bashing is fun. lol thanks btw way im ganna get the new waterproof vxl rustler in december. but any advice is helpful
if you are new to rc do NOT get a lipo because if you charge it too long it has a high chance of exploding and you always have to watch the temperature of your esc and motor to make sure it doesnt overheat
if your getting 7 min something is wrong. my 6400mah 11.1v gos for maybe 30-40 mins at 45-50 mph. my lipo was only $100 at a hobby show that moves around the usa
Thanks for posting that was cool How long is the run time on the Lipos? I get about 7 minutes on my 3800 NiMH batteries with my brushless motor. I dont even remember what brushless motor I have it is three years old and hasn't been used. It looks like traxxas has much cooler stuff now instead of the do it myself that I had to do for my stampede to go brushless
Unfortunately, I have 12 dead MaxAmps packs that indicate otherwise. Yes, they were all used within spec. Yes, I took perfect care of them. They were just bad packs, everyone of them.
Why is common sense funny? 8.4V is more than 7.2V. NiMH cells typically drop more voltage under load, but they're still delivering more volts at the first part of the run. Lipo does outperform for the duration though. Had I tested them after 10 minutes of runtime, then the 2s lipo would've had a higher top speed.
They're actually incredibly similar, sharing many of the same parts, including drive train and electronics. The Stampede VXL has higher ground clearance which helps off-road. The Rustler VXL will be a littler better on-road.
you can use tire warmers or a hot plate to warm them. if not, put ur oven on for about 5 minutes at max temp. turn off and insert the lipo. the temperature inside should be about 100-120f which is about the lipos max temp. dont leave it in with the oven on though.
Hey brother, great video... i needed to see it.. So i take it the mAH makes the battery last longer but no make the car faster? The cells make it faster right? Thanks for your help?
In general, more mAh means longer runtimes and more cells (voltage) makes it faster. More mAh (than an otherwise identical pack) also means that the pack can hold its voltage under load better, which can mean more performance as well.
Cold isn't bad for lipos, but it does reduce their performance. Some racers even warm their lipos right before the race. I wouldn't recommend doing that though unless you really really know what you're doing. You can run 28/86, but you need to be very mindful of the temperature of the motor, esc, and lipos. Search the Traxxas forums to see what people are running.
Going uphill even a little bit could make a pretty substantial difference. Also, make sure your gear mesh isn't too tight and that it rolls very smoothly with no binding anywhere. If your lipo is cold, that would make a big difference also. I did mine in the warm summertime and lipos love warm (not hot or cold).
Holy moly! That's crazy fast, mister. Makes me excited to think I'm getting the Velineon tomorrow for my Kyosho TF-5 (only 7.2v). And whenever the store get in back in stock, I'll be getting a Slash with a few 8.4v packs. I can hardly wait. :]
take the shock spacers out, put rusty shocks all the way around, or get the losi(?) xxxt shocks (adjustable). You can also play with the mounting areas on the arms.
It depends on the capacity of the batteries, gearing, and driving style. In other words, there is no possible way for me to answer that question because I'll never know your driving style. It's different for everyone. I personally don't use 7 cells.
Just use bigger tires and/or move the bottom part of the shocks closer to the chassis on the a-arm. Adding pre-load spacers to the shocks will increase ride-height as well to an extent.
Lol. Nice vid man. I got a pede vxl brushless too. I got a 7-cell 5000mah in it and the thing flys. the front wheels skip along the road on my street cuz theres no grip left. Its geared at stock. havent change it yet but worx well.
hey butmunch, hahaha.. anyway, im doing wide conversion with my rustler, using rear vxl rpm arms, with rear vxl camber links, and jato toe links. if the casters are the same as rustler you need to drill them out to allow for the larger rear screw/pin and you need a 4mm and 1mm spacer(fuel tubing works) to make up for the gap with using rear arm. that about sums it up for the rustler, id imagine it would be similar for yourself, and xxl shocks on all corners
The E-maxx is heavy so it takes a lot of current to get it moving. Weak batteries can't handle that for very long. Similar situation with your 'Pede with the tall gearing. It's drawing lots of amps which is dropping the voltage on your batts below the threshold. You need to drop the gearing or get better batteries that won't drop voltage under load. :-)
Thanks! I using venom 3s 5400 so I don't doubt it. I was impatient and didn't feel like waiting on an order. I tried 25/83 and it did once after running it awhile. Might be actually low this time. I'll charge and balance then try again. Live in baton rouge so I need a fresh charge in case no tv! gustav!!!!
Yep. I put those 3s 5000mAh MaxAmps lipos in a Brushless Revo and they couldn't handle it. It puffed cells on both packs. They are quite obviously over-rated cells. They're sold as 20C, but are actually closer to 12C IMO.
I asked because I have an e-maxx & it goes through batteries every 2 months seems like. I have even used it lately. I guess it's something with those dual battery esc's maybe. I have a nimh & 3s for my stampede and those batteries are doing fine. One question though... I geared my stampede 30/83 and I have been getting a false low voltage on my esc every now & then(traxxas said doesn't mean anything) but if anybody has had this happen... just wondering if it could been damaging my battery?
The lipos I used were good at first, but they didn't last very long when I used them in a bigger truck. They should have worked fine in the bigger truck but were not rated accurately. They don't hold up to their ratings very well in my experience and they cost too much for what they are. There are much better deals to be had IMO.
It's all about the batteries. In the video I used 4 different batteryies that netted 4 different speeds. Watch it again and read the text parts for the details.
what kind of brushless motor were you running to get it to 60 mph? im thinking about upgrading the stock engine on my stampede and im tryin to get an idea
Amazing what the stampede can do just being stock. My pede is running stock as well, with a Venom 7 cell 4200mah flat pack. It gets up and goes for sure. reat fun for speed and jumping.
They must not have been using the right batteries/gearing. Many people have shown, like in this video, that the Stampede VXL will do 65+ on a good 3s lipo and proper gearing that comes in the box.
brushless moters require no maintenance, are faster and more powerfull.create less friction, run longer on a charge, run smother than brushed...ect...
nice vid man, sweet music. Mine should be here tomorrow, I can't wait. I'll be running 22/86 with 8.4v Elite 4500. Thought i'd try to get familiar with brushless before i jumped to the lipo. I've been running nitros for a while but never a legit electric.
Try this for me: Get your 5700 to hit 68mph (if you can) and report back your temperatures and how long it lasts until you have to throw the motor away. It's a good motor, but it won't get the Stampede to 68mph reliably like the 3500 VXL will. I've already tried it. :-)
And if you're gearing your mm5700 at 18/86 then it's overgeared. You should be able to do that on the 4600 but for bashing thats too high in the 5700.
is this truck better than the regular stampede? and wat does brushless mean? im 12 and a beginner so please reply. im tryin to find somtin reasonable.
The Stampede XL-5 is the regular one. The motor uses brushes to generate power, so it's called brushed. The Stampede VXL is the crazy fast one. It uses a newer technology motor that doesn't use brushes, so it's called brushless. It's more efficient and way more powerful. It's twice as fast and twice the price too.
Depending on the money you have to invest in one of these, you can always buy the VXL and just use crappy batteries to keep the speed down while you're learning. It also has a "training" profile that cuts the power by 50%. Then you can always get better higher voltage packs down the road when you're ready.
It's a type of motor. Doesn't use brushes. Uses a magnet. much more powerful. If your going brushless (even if you're not), a forum will help for brushless (BL) preparation
i have a vxl stampede with a 3s lipo 5400 mah. it is INSANE fast and runs for like 40 mins :) im very happy with it. if your considering lipo, its a great upgrade and as long as you have a cutoff, balancer, and peak charger its pretty safe
nice video..i just bought the stampede vxl today..i just wanna know how many minutes of runtime do you get with those maxamps li-po 11.1v 3s batteries u use in your truck? and also did you achieve 65mph just by leaving the pinion/spur gear unchanged from stock? thanks
Great video, well made. I was wondering if the Stampede VXL motor or anything needs to be "broken in" before use. I don't think it does, but just a question.
Breaking in isn't necessary, but before you run it for the first time make sure all of the nuts and pins and screws are tightened. It sucks having to stop 5 minutes into your first run because a wheel nut came off and the axle pin gets lost. >:(
How fast will the 2s go geared with 30/86? I don't know if I should get that battery or a nine-cell nimh. How long does a 9 cell run, and how is its speed compared to the 6000mAh 2s?
all be posting a video of it soon, A tip to keep the car to the ground is to buy smaller tires , that will keep it from jumping in the air as much, or by ajusting the shocks, the stampede will more likely flip more than the bandit.
please resone enyone what is more durable emaxx brushed or stampete 2wd brushless and which one is better

Thanks! I using venom 3s 5400 so I don't doubt it. I was impatient and didn't feel like waiting on an order. I tried 25/83 and it did once after running it awhile. Might be actually low this time. I'll charge and balance then try again. Live in baton rouge so I need a fresh charge in case no tv! gustav!!!!

when you say you put the lipos on a bigger truck, did you mean a twin battery esc like the brushless set ups for the e-maxx & e-revo?
tigerfan3905 3 years ago
Yep. I put those 3s 5000mAh MaxAmps lipos in a Brushless Revo and they couldn't handle it. It puffed cells on both packs. They are quite obviously over-rated cells. They're sold as 20C, but are actually closer to 12C IMO.
kulangflow 3 years ago
I asked because I have an e-maxx & it goes through batteries every 2 months seems like. I have even used it lately. I guess it's something with those dual battery esc's maybe. I have a nimh & 3s for my stampede and those batteries are doing fine. One question though... I geared my stampede 30/83 and I have been getting a false low voltage on my esc every now & then(traxxas said doesn't mean anything) but if anybody has had this happen... just wondering if it could been damaging my battery?

eBay ... it's called a Garmin eTrex Legend

for christmas i'm going to ask for one just like yours. damn i feel like a child!
kenwoodprobes93 3 years ago
The lipos I used were good at first, but they didn't last very long when I used them in a bigger truck. They should have worked fine in the bigger truck but were not rated accurately. They don't hold up to their ratings very well in my experience and they cost too much for what they are. There are much better deals to be had IMO.
kulangflow 3 years ago
ok another question? how much was that lipo.were did you get it?
can u do wheelies with the second battery?
dirtox4 3 years ago
Yes, it's solid.
kulangflow 3 years ago
how was it going 37 bone stock?
it says 65+
dirtox4 3 years ago
It's all about the batteries. In the video I used 4 different batteryies that netted 4 different speeds. Watch it again and read the text parts for the details.

what kind of brushless motor were you running to get it to 60 mph? im thinking about upgrading the stock engine on my stampede and im tryin to get an idea
rebelleader123 3 years ago
I was using the stock VXL brushless esc and motor. It's still running strong.
kulangflow 3 years ago
Amazing what the stampede can do just being stock. My pede is running stock as well, with a Venom 7 cell 4200mah flat pack. It gets up and goes for sure. reat fun for speed and jumping.

should i get the revo or the jato because it will be my first nitro car.
maelynnc 3 years ago
Get the Revo and immediately convert it to brushless electric.
kulangflow 3 years ago
no, get the e-revo, then convert to brushless lol. it would be cheaper and easier
scarletboa 3 years ago
no the revo is 500 and then brushless is like a good 250 its a stupid idea

This proves that Traxxas advertises exactly what they say!

how did you tell how fast the truck was going? or did you have a remote that where you can put how you want it to go?

Trade you a working Nitro Ruslter 2.5 for it.

I wonder what's the difference of a motor that has 12 turn, and a motor with 20 turn?
TIckP 3 years ago
i just have the regular xl1 stampede andam going to put the xl5 but now i would put brushless except i dont have a straight without cars
eligs340 4 years ago
i have tryd myself using a 9000 19.2volt on a 20c discharge of power. but i dont think you should do this as not good for the brushless motor
EvilResistance 4 years ago
yes a 8000 li-po battery at 11.1 volts
EvilResistance 4 years ago
you need a 3cell li-po battery 11.1volts 20c discharge. iv done a speed test and these models can go 82mph max.
EvilResistance 4 years ago
traxxas says stanpede vxl goes 65+MPH. RC Car action magazine did a test and it only went 57
wolftube02 4 years ago
They must not have been using the right batteries/gearing. Many people have shown, like in this video, that the Stampede VXL will do 65+ on a good 3s lipo and proper gearing that comes in the box.
kulangflow 4 years ago
hello
i just watched your video.
whats brushless mean?
im not quite for sure.
keeshgoboom 4 years ago
brushless moters require no maintenance, are faster and more powerfull.create less friction, run longer on a charge, run smother than brushed...ect...
jesseseamans 4 years ago
i got my fan at a hobby shop
tikibaha 4 years ago
for the speed 25t but for bashing i would use the 19t,i have 29t its crazy fast but it gets hot without a fan
tikibaha 4 years ago
where would i be able to get a fan for the esc and motor for my new rustler vxl?
scarletboa 4 years ago
what gear should u recommend for 9 cell 4200nimh ? i dont want the motor to head up too much.
munnii 4 years ago
i have a 9 cell its fast but not as fast as 3 cell lipo, for the money i would recomend the 9 cell ($44)

nice vid man, sweet music. Mine should be here tomorrow, I can't wait. I'll be running 22/86 with 8.4v Elite 4500. Thought i'd try to get familiar with brushless before i jumped to the lipo. I've been running nitros for a while but never a legit electric.
torqmuch 4 years ago
Once you go brushless, you won't go back to nitro.....unless you're a nitro guy.
PedeKid 4 years ago
Nice! I can't believe how close we are to breaking 70mph. Very cool.
kulangflow 4 years ago
my mamba max 5700 goes 45mph geared 18/86
that makes the vxl look, well sad. but after all its only a 3500 and i gotta 5700 so right there is the reason y
jessem2480 4 years ago
the velineon will have alot more torque so you can gear high and still have as much torque as a 5700 geared low.
jpagan123456789 4 years ago
Try this for me: Get your 5700 to hit 68mph (if you can) and report back your temperatures and how long it lasts until you have to throw the motor away. It's a good motor, but it won't get the Stampede to 68mph reliably like the 3500 VXL will. I've already tried it. :-)
kulangflow 4 years ago
And if you're gearing your mm5700 at 18/86 then it's overgeared. You should be able to do that on the 4600 but for bashing thats too high in the 5700.
PedeKid 4 years ago
is this truck better than the regular stampede? and wat does brushless mean? im 12 and a beginner so please reply. im tryin to find somtin reasonable.
poison70p 4 years ago
The Stampede XL-5 is the regular one. The motor uses brushes to generate power, so it's called brushed. The Stampede VXL is the crazy fast one. It uses a newer technology motor that doesn't use brushes, so it's called brushless. It's more efficient and way more powerful. It's twice as fast and twice the price too.
kulangflow 4 years ago
Depending on the money you have to invest in one of these, you can always buy the VXL and just use crappy batteries to keep the speed down while you're learning. It also has a "training" profile that cuts the power by 50%. Then you can always get better higher voltage packs down the road when you're ready.
kulangflow 4 years ago
It's a type of motor. Doesn't use brushes. Uses a magnet. much more powerful. If your going brushless (even if you're not), a forum will help for brushless (BL) preparation
PedeKid 4 years ago
i have a vxl stampede with a 3s lipo 5400 mah. it is INSANE fast and runs for like 40 mins :) im very happy with it. if your considering lipo, its a great upgrade and as long as you have a cutoff, balancer, and peak charger its pretty safe
redrider250r 4 years ago
What company made your LiPo?
superdriver777 4 years ago
$140 from MaxAmps . com
kulangflow 4 years ago
nice video..i just bought the stampede vxl today..i just wanna know how many minutes of runtime do you get with those maxamps li-po 11.1v 3s batteries u use in your truck? and also did you achieve 65mph just by leaving the pinion/spur gear unchanged from stock? thanks
vijith555 4 years ago
I've never timed the runtime, I just know it's a lot. The spur was the same, the pinion was the 25T that comes in the VXL box.
kulangflow 4 years ago
Great video, well made. I was wondering if the Stampede VXL motor or anything needs to be "broken in" before use. I don't think it does, but just a question.
cpm6372 4 years ago
No breaking in necessary. Just light it up and have fun!
kulangflow 4 years ago
Breaking in isn't necessary, but before you run it for the first time make sure all of the nuts and pins and screws are tightened. It sucks having to stop 5 minutes into your first run because a wheel nut came off and the axle pin gets lost. >:(
oziumzx 4 years ago
Haha, exactly that happened to me! so it is a very good idea to check everything before first run!

How fast will the 2s go geared with 30/86? I don't know if I should get that battery or a nine-cell nimh. How long does a 9 cell run, and how is its speed compared to the 6000mAh 2s?
superdriver777 4 years ago
SWEET VIDEO , I HAVE A BANDIT VXL MY TOP SPEED ON THAT WAS 76.4 MPH , USING A 8000 mAh Li-po (18.5V)
GoldRollsRoyce 4 years ago
Very cool! Show us a video! How did you keep the front end on the ground? I know I could break 70 if I can keep the front end planted. Ideas?
kulangflow 4 years ago
all be posting a video of it soon, A tip to keep the car to the ground is to buy smaller tires , that will keep it from jumping in the air as much, or by ajusting the shocks, the stampede will more likely flip more than the bandit.
GoldRollsRoyce 4 years ago
When I was doing speed testing, I bought another spoiler (same as factory) and mounted it on the front
laurenlead 4 years ago
It would be great if you could show some A123 cells running, I am curious as to run time and speed reached with a 3s one
