The song is about! Your stupid perception, okay? Now just shutup and look at the fuckin' white board. there you will see, ... What ever you damned well please.
@ToiletBomberAlpha You misinterpret my post. I'm merely repeating what Trent himself has already said in interviews. It's a recurring theme throughout several of his albums.
look, it ain't 1987, and it's a different trent...he grew up...imagine that. he still rules. his ideals and intelligence are still there. and he's still the man.
My ism is that this song is him venting about whether or not that significant other should actually matter to him or not! Since, in his perception of he/she, he got hurt real bad.
@MrC2king First off, the President signs bills into Law. The Supreme Court exists to hear legal challenges that claim that a lower court decision was unconstitutional. Second off, your elected officials don't give a damn about you, they're in the pockets of the banks and corporations that influence government more with their money than you do with your vote.
@MrC2king Did the Majority of the people of America want organized prayer out of public schools, abortion legalized, George W. Bush's presidency, or corporations to have the same rights as individuals? No. Those things were decided by the Supreme Court. Nothing Democratic about any of those decisions.
@JanusChristIsRisen the majority of people did want organized prayer and right to choose. as for the presidency, our own laws were followed. change them. as for corporations, well...chalk that one up to lobbyists.
@MrC2king America is not a democracy and never was. America is a secular republic. Ben Franklin once said "Democracy is 2 wolves and 1 sheep voting on what's for dinner."
Agreed. I was raised by southern baptists. I went along with it, mainly to please my parents. It only made me have more questions and feel more guilt. I actually felt guilty for not feeling this connection to "god." Thankfully they raised me to be smart enough to make decisions for myself, so I looked for my own answers. I've been an atheist for about 6 years now, and I'm actually happy. If being at peace is wrong, I don't wanna be right.
This song to me is so similar to a lsd experience. The part abou seeing things you know you shouldn' t see, but now I no why, things arent as pretty on the inside. Eat some lsd and that will make perfect sense. Shit is scary on the other side. I was a Lsd surgeon and the inside of reality is scary as fuck especially when you eat a hole vial.
This may not have the passion of Broken, nor the turn-it-up riffs of PHM. What this has is the "I grew up and realized life sucks because I want it to suck" honesty of age. Truth is in this song. The truth we learn after passion is sucked from us, and we are left with what is real, and the knowledge of what is not real. What other people think doesn't matter. What is real is my perception of reality, not yours. I shouldn't care so much what you think, what you believe. That hurts.
I love how you'll hear ten year-olds say "fuck" or "shit" all the time, yet we can't say it on tv or in music. At least South Park just does it and makes the censors have to bleep it all.
I disagree that this song qualifies as genius. Reznor delivered awesome albums, but the focus has been lost. "Drifting into the abstract..." blech awful lyrics. I used to love your work and I still love your old stuff, Trent. Success was unkind to your talent.
So they censor this, which isn't even the least bit offensive. I'm sure if this was a Kesha song or some other stupid now day shit, they wouldn't censor one thing.
This song is extraordinary. The lyrical content, the synth composing, all put together wonderfully. Trent is a creative genius. This is art. As for the censoring, I think censoring is always stupid. Slang is a part of our culture as much as anything else. The notion that "Fuck", or "Asshole" are bad words is based on silly, outdated religious morals that shouldn't rule a democracy. So as an adult of 34 years of age, I say no censoring of art. The expressions in the song shouldn't be ommited.
The double morale of the present day. Our kids can kill people in virtual game worlds, watch fake women fake fuck in porn, but they cannot say the word fuck. Hah
@Winewoodgloom You have wonderful grammar and vocabulary, just thought I should point that out. Most people these days have forgotten how to use the English language :)
@Winewoodgloom In actual truth, it's not the Christian morals that are outdated. The notion you speak of is a remnant mainly from the Victorian era, as are many of our so-called "table manners". Even though most *Christians* don't even know it, they're running off outdated beliefs when they consider such words to be "bad". Culture is a thing composed of history. And most people are too stupid to move on.
@Winewoodgloom agreed with most part of your thinking, yet "fuck" or "asshole" have shit to do with religious issues. They are mostly related to what´s defined as "good manners". Regards, a religious guy.
@rapTram you are joking aren't you? our culture is being taken down by a 'do what thou wilt' attitude and fuck everyone else. decent christian values are ridiculed and scorned on endless tv shows and films written by twisted sick atheists. the shackles of 'freedom'. don't the lyrics of this song say it all?
The lyrics are about solipsism. And while I totally know where you're coming from with your comment on things going to shit, you really shouldn't generalize by labeling atheists as "twisted and sick," there are just as many sick and twisted religious folk as non-religious folk. Everyone's human, and religious beliefs have little to do with morals - one's upbringing has a much larger impact on whether a person will be good-natured.
@etb513 I was with you all the way til you said "religious beliefs have little to do with morals". Growing up with the reinforced values of treating others as you would want to be treated and love thy neighbor would seem to produce a stronger result in morality than being raised in a vacuum with tv and a broken education system as guidelines.
I agree actually, religion does help reinforce good values in people. I worded that first comment poorly - I don't want to dismiss religion as not having any impact, I just wanted to say that one can still have good morals without the guidance of religion. It's just a different path, one of many. There are so many things that factor into who we really are, that it's both impossible and unfair to point at any one thing and say, "This is what makes someone a good/bad person."
@etb513 Solipsism or mystical consciousness? You cannot confuse the two, One believes that only "I" exist (solipsism) and no one else does, while the mystical consciousness of nirvana, satori, moksha,...These see the mutual interdependence of all things and come to understand that "I" is all there is. "You", "The Other", this too is "I". Trent it seems is in the latter, seeing that he attributes his illusion of separateness to all the pain he's ever suffered.
No, solipsism is the belief that everything that exists is a projection of one's own consciousness. In existentialism, which this song perfectly illustrates, the other is a projection of the self. In this, there is nothing other than self, so the transcendendental 'I' of mystical consciousness is abandoned. It is not a song about seperation, but about accepting his identity while realising his formerly shared identity was an illusion.
@seahawk75 "There is nothing other than the self" is exactly what mysticism is saying. Brahman, the ultimate reality of existence is all that there is. There is only me. I think you have your interpretation of mystical ideas wrong.
It's not solipsism. It's existentiism. The realisation that there is someone else, but that your relationship with them is driven completely by your own needs and desires, which in this case are to hurt himself. Hence, he entered a relationship fuelled solely by his desire to be hurt, and the romantic ideals that were formed were all part of that hurting mechanism and not in any sense shared and real. Solipsism would be more self-determined.
@seahawk75 He never exclusively states that the other exists at all, which is a requirement of existentialism. I do agree that is a possible interpretation, but I do not believe that to be the case - he didn't enter a relationship to hurt himself, he fabricated the relationship in the first place.
He doesn't have to state it, as it's given in the context, 'fitting into your world that is'. Only is a reflective analysis of why he chose to fit into that world; of what it is in himself that led him to idealise this person; and most important of all that he chose it. This last realisation - that we choose our every circumstance - is the cornerstone of existentialism. Therefore, he summarises with the realisation that there was no her in what he has been through, only him.
@seahawk75 "that we choose our every circumstance", the real meaning of Karma. All that we perceive to be not us, outside us, beyond our control, is actually ourselves and our doing, even the illusion that we are little egos trapped inside a bag of skin is our own doing.
@etb513 i love the song, and your comment is great. so much truth. i just can't help but think of Descartes Meditations on Philosophy and his disproof of solopsism hahah.
@jaddajn1 Atheist doesn't mean bad like christian doesn't mean good. Atheist only means that you believe that there is no greater being, that doesn't mean that they don't have good morals or value honesty and trust. Just like being a christian doesn't guarentee a good non-judgemental person. Think about it.
@Winewoodgloom Words such as that should really only be used in limited quantities still, because they signify a strong outburst of emotions. Such as anger and enjoyment, but they are mostly used to describe a situation of when you literally can not put what you are seeing or hearing into words. Also Fuck loses it's edge when there are people who just spam it out every sentence because they can't think of something better to say. That said, Censorship is wrong.
@Winewoodgloom I think cutting your throat and playing with your blood would be an incredible expression of art. I don't believe morality should keep me from my art. Don't you agree?
you guys really miss fucking that much? better get out of the computer, then...or wait until you've grown up enough to get a girl, whatever's the case
If you keep watching this song and cussing you'll scare people. Every time you say it, it makes people want some. And sometimes they don't get any. And they have to sneak and beat themself up. I mean off. Mwha ha.
I just love the way cutting out the word 'fucking' makes us all want to say it! Vevo and Youtube just got the exact opposite of what they set out to do. Well done chaps.
Se os brasileiros não gostam desta música, deste génio, que se mantenham neutros. A partir do momento em que comentam sem qualquer brio, então sim - são uns autênticos BURROS/IGNORANTES/IDIOTAS.
