first off, I am a Notre dame fan and I agree that this play should have been reviewed and overturned. However, Polk's overturned TD with 7 minutes to go DEFINITELY was not a touchdown. NBC paused the replay a little late, thus making it look like there wasn't conclusive evidence. However, If you play the slowmotion replay in slow motion and pause it when Polk's knee actually hits the ground, it is obvious that the ball is not over the goal line.

The officiating has been pretty terrible week in and week out in every Notre Dame game. The Big Ten officiating crew took a touchdown away from Armando Allen of Notre Dame, and missed several pass interference calls on Golden Tate. aganst Michigan State, the officials again took away an obvious touchdown from the Irish. It's about time the refs swung one Notre Dame's way/ Although, I believe that this two point conversion was good
When a wide reciever catches a pass, he sometimes slips down onto his knee, but continues running and going on with the play. It isn't until he is actually taken down, that they rule the play dead. If you watch enough football, you would see it happen. The only reason why the two point conversion was good however, was only because two offensive lineman gave him a strong push into the endzone
If you watch enough COLLEGE football you would know that as soon as the knee hits a player is down. You are referring to an NFL rule. Also, if there is contact when a player goes down, or if a player goes down as a result of contact in the NFL he is considered down. I think that would apply here.
I won't argue that this was a questionable call. But from what I see there was every possibility that his upper body was over the goal line when his knee finally touched. I'm not going to say that he would deserve the benefit of a bad call. But I will say that I think we ALL need to get used to them from the lousy officiating I've seen this year.

this is CLEARLY inconclusive! that blue strip at the bottom hides his knee going down. his knee appears to be an inch or two off the ground in the second shot. Seek and you shall find.

Darkgoob, not sure if they discussed this on NBC, but while the on-field officials were Pac-10 guys, the BOOTH officials were Big East. If you're wondering why the play was not reviewed at that stage in the game, you have your answer.

Aside from the goal line stands, ND's defense was not that impressive. Some HUGE holes in the middle of their defense. Sark finally called some plays there in the 3rd quarter, but I wished he would've called more short slants and routes to take advantage of that.

The problem is that the NCAA videos are not the same as the ones ABC uses so ABC pretty much has better angles and better shots compared to the NCAA replay cameras. Even if this was NCAA footage there really isn't enough proof to overturn it so it's just bad luck.
The angle they used to overturn the Chris Polk tuchdown was a horrible angle as well it was three yards in the endzone maybe if it was actually on the goal line. That touchdaown even with the bad angle was way to close to be conclusive.
I've watched this a couple times and I think you're probably right that he was down before he crossed the goal line, but this isn't exactly definitive evidence because you cannot see anything but his leg. The huge mass of people block Hughes' (#33) upper body so there is no view of the ball, so the video evidence is inconclusive. All that being said, I'm surprised it didn't even get reviewed.

I laugh whenever Golden Domers complain about the "Bush Push".
Look closely at this video and you'll see #59, #55, #78, & #74 pulling and pushing Hughes into the endzone. It happens on every play, and it doesn't bother me, but ND fans should stop pointing to that as a reason ND lost the Bush Push game.
PS. It did factor into the outcome as Washington's field goal merely tied it up instead of winning. That's the very definition of "relevancy".

Once the tip of the ball is EVEN with the goal line it it s a tuddy. The ball was in his right hand, which was even with the goal line before his knee hit. TOUCHDOWN!!
Besides, ND got HOSED a few times on penalties. The PI on sergio brown on the drive that sent it to OT was a terrible call, as was the roughing the snapper.

first off, I am a Notre dame fan and I agree that this play should have been reviewed and overturned. However, Polk's overturned TD with 7 minutes to go DEFINITELY was not a touchdown. NBC paused the replay a little late, thus making it look like there wasn't conclusive evidence. However, If you play the slowmotion replay in slow motion and pause it when Polk's knee actually hits the ground, it is obvious that the ball is not over the goal line.

Of course I remember. But the difference there is, even if the refs made the correct call, then it still would have been first and goal Texas at the 7 yard line of USC. The officiating has been pretty terrible week in and week out in every Notre Dame game. The Big Ten officiating crew took a touchdown away from Armando Allen of Notre Dame, and missed several pass interference calls on Golden Tate. aganst Michigan State, the officials again took away an obvious touchdown from the Irish. It's about time the refs swung one Notre Dame's way/ Although, I believe that this two point conversion was good

When a wide reciever catches a pass, he sometimes slips down onto his knee, but continues running and going on with the play. It isn't until he is actually taken down, that they rule the play dead. If you watch enough football, you would see it happen. The only reason why the two point conversion was good however, was only because two offensive lineman gave him a strong push into the endzone

If you watch enough COLLEGE football you would know that as soon as the knee hits a player is down. You are referring to an NFL rule. Also, if there is contact when a player goes down, or if a player goes down as a result of contact in the NFL he is considered down. I think that would apply here.

it is conclusive on the second replay... you see his knee clearly on the ground, and his WHOLE UPPER TORSO is behind the goalline, with his back facing the goalline. he had the ball tucked into his chest, meaning it was even further behind the goalline than his back. that was not a touchdown.

I don't see anything conclusive, but these calls go both ways. How about the illegal block in the back by UW on ND #5 who would have stopped Locker on third down during UW's first series. UW's first TD should never have happened, it was a gift from the Pac 10 refs. Those sam refs called an illegal block in the back on ND later in the game. Go check the video at NBC sports.

You can call a penalty on apprx. 85% of every play.Roughing the snapper is BS, as the ND player did not make direct intentional contact with the long snapper. As I recall, Notre Dame had their own touchdown called back, a roughing the passer call, and a roughing the holder call that went againt them. Washington had about 11 tries to get a touchdown within the 1-yard line in the game. To me, it sounds like your team can't win a game when it stares you in the face. We outgained you in the game by nearly 100 yards. So stop crying, it's football.

Actually it's not particularly clear. What is clear is that the officials handed Washington four free plays on the half yard line, and they still couldn't score a TD. As for Polk's non-TD, I say look at Tate's long play earlier in the game.
Bottom line, the Notre Dame defense stood up, and stonewalled UW. It's a long season, good luck in the rest of your games.

I think you should look at tates long play early in the game. at least they had a good angle the line judge was right there watching his feet. NBC zoomed right in on his foot and from what I saw atleast half of Tates foot is out of bounds. The refs handed Washington four free plays? I don't know about you but I would rather take a touchdown over four more plays to try and get it in again.

no, b/c the replay i saw should have put the ball on the 1 inch line, but it doesnt matter, if he scored then there would have been almost 8 minutes on the clock. more than enough time for 2 TD drives for the irish. and i dont feel bad for UW fans b/c washington was only in the game b/c of a missed defensive holding call on the lateral that led to the defensive TD in the 2nd quarter. make that call and the game isnt close. the better team won, despite the better team playing bad most of the game

But, there's no denying UW played a helluva game in the redzone holding you guys to a shit load of FG's.
So, if turn the tables ... if our receivers hadn't dropped all those fucking passes ... if Chris Polk's TD wasn't overturned ... if we had scored TD's on both those 1st & goals ... we would have "DESTROYED" Notre Dame.

I think it was because the game was televised on NBC the Notre Dame network. What a bunch of biased brown nosers at the end of the game I did not see one positive Husky hilight. They only showed all the plays that made Notre Dame look like a BCS contender HA! Ooooo they beat Washington a team that went 0-12 last year. good luck against a good defence in USC.

Officials...regardless of whether they are officials from the teams conference....which Notre Dame doesn't have since they are independent (regardless of their Big East affiliation) don't decide the games. Hey alexmueller22, I'm not sure how a bad call is supposed to "make up" for an accurate one, unless we're talking about Notre Dame. Darkgoob, not sure if they discussed this on NBC, but while the on-field officials were Pac-10 guys, the BOOTH officials were Big East. Of course, the Big East is the conference that Notre Dame is a member of in EVERY sport other than football. If you're wondering why the play was not reviewed at that stage in the game, you have your answer.

the gaol line stand was impressive and Washington had there chance to score. But in retrospect the roughing the sanpper call ment nothing. Except more time was wasted off the clock. Time that could have been used to march down the field to score a game winning touchdown, or send it inot over time which ended up happening.

The call gave you three more chances to score inside of the five yardline. Besides even if they ruled this two point conversion no good, how can you say you would win. If ND was only up 1, Jon Tenuta would have thrown different defensive schemes at you to keep you away from our side.....

I think you are giving your defence to much credit If washington could drive 80 yards against USC with the final drive of the game I think they might be able to get into field goal position against Notre Dame. If Chris polk scores that touchdown that is a four point swing and we arn't even talking about this. The roles would be reversed and it would be the ND fans moaning and groaning.

Aside from the goal line stands, ND's defense was not that impressive. Some HUGE holes in the middle of their defense. Sark finally called some plays there in the 3rd quarter, but I wished he would've called more short slants and routes to take advantage of that.
We'll never hear the end of ND's goal line stands ... but, aren't these the same guys slipping off of Chris Polk's legs? How many fricken guys did it take to bring the guy down? Polk was a beast out there!!

Neither team "deserved" to lose a game as epic as this one. It was hard fought on both sides. Both teams had their share of great moments ... as well as ugly ones.
ND won. But, UW certainly did NOT deserve to lose.

I'll give credit where it's due ... and ND pulled it out in OT. But, UW was right there the whole fucking game, pal ... 7 lead changes? Does that mean anything to you?

The problem is that the NCAA videos are not the same as the ones ABC uses so ABC pretty much has better angles and better shots compared to the NCAA replay cameras. Even if this was NCAA footage there really isn't enough proof to overturn it so it's just bad luck.

The angle they used to overturn the Chris Polk tuchdown was a horrible angle as well it was three yards in the endzone maybe if it was actually on the goal line. That touchdaown even with the bad angle was way to close to be conclusive.

The play was originally ruled a TD ... so, in order to over turn it, there has to "CONCLUSIVE" irrefutable evidence against it.
It's really a shame we couldn't get to see the EXACT "replay" (and angle) those refs were seeing.
The outcome was what it was and UW lost.
BUT ... I thought the ball clearly crossed the plane before Polk's knee hit the ground.
2 PAC-10 ref's on the field.
2 of theirs as replay officials.
If anything, they need to mix that shit up. 1 of each.

I've watched this a couple times and I think you're probably right that he was down before he crossed the goal line, but this isn't exactly definitive evidence because you cannot see anything but his leg. The huge mass of people block Hughes' (#33) upper body so there is no view of the ball, so the video evidence is inconclusive. All that being said, I'm surprised it didn't even get reviewed.

I thought is was odd that the officials reviewed the Wash TD at the 7 min mark (allowing ND not to have to risk a challenge) but didnt review this inside of a 2 min. forcing Wash to risk their last TO if they did. ITS FIXED

O well, Notre Dame had their share of bad calls. Ultimately, the players decide the game. Washington should have scored more but they couldn't punch it in from the one yard line because the Irish D stuffed them.............3 TIMES!!!!!!

What bothers me is when Washington was up by 5 points and had 4th and goal they tried for a touchdown rather than kick the field goal. A field goal would have given Washington an 8 point lead. What the hell was the Washington coach thinking? Go up by 8 points and force the Irish to have to score a touchdown and a 2 point conversion just to tie. The Washington coach needs a good ass chewin for being such a dumbass. I hate the Irish. I hate them. But the Washington coach is a moron!
