Would be awesome if Peter Jackson did some movies from The Silmarillions. The story of Turin Turambar would be an epic movie. Beren and Luthien would be a must. Melkor and Ungoliant destroying the tree's of light in Valinor and the exodus of the Noldor taking the ships and burning them. Earendil the half elven meeting the Valar and flying around in his boat and destroying dragons in the great war against Melkor. ohhhhhh too much epicness!!!!!!!
its really fucked up how morgoth just fucked over turin's whole family...good that he get to run that son of a bitch through in the Dagor Dagorath with good old Gurthang
OMG!!! this Kyrie was going through my head when I was reading the story of Túrin lol! @bshieldsbb01, I agree about Liam Neeson playing Húrin, that would be awesome!
@Hektor88, if I ever write a greek-style tragedy this is sooo going to be it.
If not into a movie, The Children of Húrin could be ultimately turned into a greek tragedy, since it has so many resemblances with the classical plays. We could do some kind of cooperative work?...
@joseport123456789, yes, it is a textbook Greek tragedy, based on a Finnish legend. lol! just goes to show how we're all more similar than different :)
Regarding a cast I pretty much would choose an all british or norse cast for the movie and asa with LOTR I wouldn't use top actors for it because they would surely ruin it, the audiance is saturated with seeing them in soo many movies moreover save liam neeson none of the mentioned fits the roe of turin and the female chars, well Eva Green would be ok but a tad rougher and more nobler but Angelina Jolie no fracking way man she does not fit the role at all too mainstream.
not to speak of the treason of melkor his war agianst the valar in valinor his chaining and only then would we come to the birth of elves adn the begining of the rain of lesser races.
tbh, the same was thought with LOTR, people would ask "who was sauron" which is precisely what i did and found out about morgoth etc. so i wont be surprised if people do the same
Hello there I was following your posts here for a while and although the idea of making the silmarillion into a movie is awsome I don't yhink it could be done except in many sequels as the whole tale of the Sillmarills is so intricate and long I mean it begins with Illuvatar forming the mayar and the ainur then Arda even this would be extensive to cover
why entire sillmarilion, they should make movies about defection of noldor ( that was the name of those crazy elves as i remember) and the fall of gondolin that would be really great
Yeah, definately The Fall of Gondolin could be filme and turned into an epic masterpiece!!!!
I would nevertheless also try to film the early history of the world. Especially the tale of Feanor and his brothers and the Kinslaying, mainly because it is so emotionally charged and secondly because it takes place in valinor and it would be unbelievable to see footage of that with the 2 trees and the dwellings of manwe or others. And yes those crazy elves where called the noldor.
Nevertheless, I am not so sure they were that crazy, I still blame Morgoth for Feanor's deeds. He showed the elves that they were not safe in valinor contrary to the idyllic promises of the valar. when morgoth attacked ransacked valinor and stole the gems feanor realised the fact that the valar were not willing to completely destroy morgoth so he felt it was the duty of the children of the valar to do it. foolish as it may be this thought in the greater scheme of things turned the tide agains
well wod crazy was a bit stretching :P but you ar right Morgoth is to blame for Feanor's deeds after all he provoked leader of noldors and feanor played right into his hands. and why wouldn't valar want to destroy morgoth? what's the point of having power-hungry control freak running around? P.S. i suggest that we move our conversation to private comments causethe posts are tooo big for his page :P
morgoth. How did the act of feanor bring about the destruction of morgoth? Through the suffering of the noldor and later of the men under the rule of morgot, their sacrifice they finaly made the valar act decisevely against morgoth. Yes it took hundreds of years but Feanor through his descendants made a POINT!
yes i agree 100% but annihilating their own brethern was still unforgivable act, they went against the will of the valar even though they knew that valinor's participation in war against morgoth was just a matter of time, they did contribute greatly to the final victory, but they weren't there to witness it because they were impatient, arrogant and overly self-righteous
@bshieldsbb01 Couldn't it have been both? Or part of the curse be Túrin's own pride? I always think of it that way. I mean, 'cause if you don't see it that way then Túrin's pride was all to blame, he wouldn't have left doriath otherwise. I think Morgoth was powerful enough to do that, only with his own evil will. Not even Húrin was so proud, yet he was a mightier warrior than Túrin.
If the LOTR was considered unfilmable can you imagine the work needed for the Silmarilion?
One form at I've often thought would be good would be a film (or an epic TV series) told in the montage style of the prologue in Fellowship, voiced by Galadriel.
She would know as she was there, (and the Kinslaying at the coast of Valinor would be really dark).
Oh I love Tolkien..wish I could have met the man..I so would have been his lover, lol! Hmm..dream cast..well I would love to see Ray Winstone (Beowulf) play Turin and Angelina Jolie play Finduilas. Nienor would be tough to cast as the actress would need to be English, young, blonde and beautiful..hmm..your thoughts bshieldbb01?
i totally agree with you. I had the idea before that liam neeson should be turin. and clive owen could be turin but he must have his hair grown longer. XD
I still think the LOTR is unfilmable! Well, I suppose any good book becomes diluted and somewhat cheapened by the attempt to make a Hollywood movie out of it. I was really hoping for something I could stand to watch, though.
The Silmarillion is the first source, and Unfinished Tales has a more expanded narative. The two were brought together in the Children of Hurin.
But search out the Book of Lost Tales 1&2. Here you'll find notes and early drafts of the Turin story from Tolkeins earliest writings. Many of it is in poem form, like the old Norse saga's he was influenced by.
The Best has an expanded confrontation between Hurin and Morgoth after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
But Hurin could not be daunted, and he defied Melkor. And Hurin the Steadfast mocked him through his pain, saying:
Blind you are Morgoth Bauglir, and blind you shall ever be, seeing only the dark. You know not what rules the hearts of Men, and if you knew you could not give it. But a fool is he who accepts what Morgoth offers. You will take first the price and then withhold the promise; and I should get only death, if I told you what you ask.
Then turning to the Host of Angband he cried: Let thy foul banners go to battle, ye Balrogs and Orcs; let your black legions go seek the sweeping sword of Turgon. Through dismal dales you shall be driven wailing like startled starlings from the stooks of wheat. Minions miserable of master base; your doom dread ye! The tide shall turn; your triumph is brief and victory shall vanish. I view afar the wrath of the Valar, roused in anger.
There's also more of Beleg's hunt for Turin after the fall of Amon Rudh, and his encounter with Gwindor in the Taur nu Fuin, that's rich in imagery; and the dialogue between the two is realy tense as Beleg persuades the terrified Gwindor to help him in his search.
Yes, that's correct. Turin does kill himself after being taken by grief and hate and throw himself upon his sword, who he asks ''Cab thou kill me swiftly?''
And so ends the story of Turin son of Hurin. But indeed, in the end of days, when the battle of wrath happens (like the battle of ragnarok to the norse mythology) Turin does come back (how he does so i am unsure) and does deal the killing blow to Morgoth, piercing his heart and destroys evil forever. And then the world will be made anew.
yeah is supossed that mandos will send him in the dagor dagorath prophesy also eaerandil will come back from the sky and beren i dont remember who else hehe
Right, the son of Huor who was guided by swans to Gondolin as the predicted messenger of the impending doom of Turgon's great city. Ulmo to water lord sent him.
as a fan of Greek tragedies, The Children of Hurin is up there with the Oresteia, Oedipus, Medea, and all the rest. TOlkien is in the same league as Aeschylus as far as i am concerned.
Yes it is.But is so tragic this story I did not like the end.FOr me stories have to end well even if the hero passed so many trials and horrible things the end must be good.I hate stories where the hero dies especealy if I like the hero.
I think is of War of Wrath is in Final Battle where the all that is Evil will awoke again and all that is good will awoke too to figth the final battle.and Turin will do the final blow to Morgoth finaly destroing evil forever and avenging the sons of hurin.
And Turin does not destroy Morgoth! Morgoth destroys Hurin through Turin his son by sending the image of his spirit, Glaurung the fire-drake to fight Turin and destroy Finrod Felegund's city of Nargothrond.
But well I liked more than Turin story end well and his family of course too Hurin such a great warrior end that way and his son also.Man I am benn thinking about the end of the book for days!
Thanks for this montage! I just finished reading the story and it left me with a heavy heart. It is the saddest story in the Tolkien legendarium. I wish they will make a full-blown movie out of the Silmarillion, emphasizing the fate of the children of Hurin and Turin's life in partocular.
Turin Turambar (and the Silmarillion as a whole) is a tragedy on a greater scale than anything I've ever read. LOTR is *SO* much better with the Silmarillion as the "background" to give context to it. Personally I prefer the Silmarillion as my favorite over the LOTR, but they do all go together, so to speak.
Turin was the son of Hurin (He's the old dude)a warlord who knew th location of the city of Gondolin, the greatest Elf stronghold. He was captured by Morgoth (Sauron's old Boss)and torured to reveal its location. He refused and Morgoth cursed his children. The story follows Turin who battles the forces of the Dark Lord, but whose actions always end up harming those he loves.
Check out the recently released full version, Children of Hurin,I can't recomend it enough
I did like this video very much, if this is a rush job, I could only imagine what you could produce if you had time to create your true vision, my original comments stand, well done =D
thanks very much. This was a 'bare bones' job, put together quickly, and not as detailed as i'd like it to be, but it does the job of highlighting key moments, characters and themes of what is undoubtedly my favourite Tolkein story. Glad you like it.

@Pesaberhimil : Actually Turin was "physically" defeated when the Orcs overwhelmed him @ the dwarf's secret
hideout. The Orcs had turned Turin into their "bitch" so much so, that when his elf-friend released him in the
dark, Turin was so dehumanized that he killed his friend instantly without even thinking about how he "freed".

Well Ray Winsotne's a bit too blonde for Turin imo (but to me he'd be the Best Androg; thats a young Ray at 2:33 representing Androg).
My dreamcast would be:
Liam Neeson as Hurin (Iv always read Hurin with Neeson's voice in my mind)
Sigourney Weaver as Morwen (grace and power on two legs)
Clive Owen as Turin (he has that right mix of anger, menace and despair, and has the dark features)

However, despite its tragic ending, according to Tolkiens original notes what he intended was to have Turin return.

In the final War of Wrath he was released from the Halls of Mandos, and it was Turin who ultimately defeated Morgoth.
In Honour of this his spirit was cast into the heavens and can be seen today; only we know it as the constellation Orion.
