I know Vince knew he was goin' somewhere big with his career but I love the respect in his eyes for Dolly as he KNEW he was on that stage with a living legend... Vince and Dolly are both class acts <3
@justjayna2001 I love the way he makes a gesture as if he knew he was in the company of greatness. God Bless them for this duet..even though I cry every darn time I listen to it. * )
MrJims23, it is funny but after 30 years he & I reunited and tried a relationship. Too late. But this song will always remind me of the fire and passion and pain of walking way!
Dolly is wonderful but Vince has always been my all time favorite singer! Wow !! what a combination. Love this song and these two can't be beat singing it. Impeccably performed..........Rog
Love to find a woman who can sing this with me at karaoke. I'm no Vince Gill but I can't resist performing with a good singer. If I could have a cup of coffee with just one "star" it would be Ms Parton. She is in touch with real emotions of us human beings. From her roots till now, she has given us all the greatest gifts of her songs!
i sang the chorus of this to one of my best lady friends in HS in my best Vince Gill impression the night we graduated. We were BFFs and I knew she was heading off to college in another part of my state. Just another story about how country music is the soundtrack of our lives.
Two of the most beautiful voices in country music come together to duet on one of the most beautiful country songs ever. Seriously, what is not to like?
if some of you don't like their little voice, why are you here? it's a good thing the good Lord didn't bestow on you their voices and talents for He knows what kind of people you'd be, hypocrites!!!
Yeah, I'm familiar with their accomplishments. I have nothing against Dolly, but her voice is that of a young girl. I prefer my women singers to sound grown, but no one can deny the impact she's had on the music industry--and I applaud her philanthropy. As for Vince, if I don't like women who sound like little girls, it goes without saying that I don't like men who sound like little girls. I also have a basic problem with philanderers; his and Amy's cheating destroyed TWO families! Not a fan!
I believe it was Jesus himself who stooped and wrote in the sand, then rising asked the woman, "Where are thine accusers, Go and sin no more." I believe this is where "let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
@CORVETTELUVR I've never cheated on my wife with a woman who was cheating on her husband. I've never been responsible for the breakup of TWO marriages, and I'm not suggesting that anyone be stoned. Nevertheless, I simply cannot abide adultery, and I don't have to like the music of cheaters. Frankly, I never cared for Vince's little-girly voice even before he and Amy started doing their thing. A man should sound like a man.
@CORVETTELUVR I'm not judging Vince Gill and his current wife in terms of Biblical judgement, and independent of who Vince is sleeping with this week, I just don't like his voice. He sings like a little girl, and I think that a man should sound like a man. Forget the other; it doesn't matter. I don't like the video. Take that at face value, and don't presume to know what's in my heart and in my head. That is judging, too.
I have never cheated myself but reserve judgment for God himself. Do you also not shop, eat in restaurants, etc. etc. etc... because you don't have any idea what your butcher, waitress, ... I don't think I need to go on. If you don't like Vince why listen to the video. You knew ahead of time you would be judging it. Or maybe you just like stirring up the pot.
@ MrSecureT. Those two voices who you think "sound like girls" have more awards between them than you can probably count. Vince Gill has 20 Grammy awards at last count; that doesn't include all the awards bestowed on him by the world of country music. Dolly is legendary in country music for both her singing and her song writing. She is a living legend. Not only that, she is a very caring and giving individual who supports the cause of literacy.

Just so that you noe...@foreverwaiting2010 this is actually a song by whitney houston....the original..by her..now that is a song that is immortal...and since then all the female singers have been trying to emulate her...like dolly parton, mariah carey..etc..but no one has ever come close...but they..everyone's got their favourite..and mine is whitney...just think that u should listen to her first..
@recycleroftrees Sorry Dolly wrote this song back in the 70's and it was number ''1'' for Dolly for weeks in country music..Whitney did remake of Dollys song this song will always belong to Dolly she owns all rights to this song..hehe get your facts right!!!
@recycleroftrees You are ABSOLUTELY Mistaken. Dolly Parton wrote this song for Porter Wagoner. It was a huge hit when she wrote it in around 1974, before Whitney Houston was even heard of. Elvis also wanted to do this song, but his manager Colonel Tom Parker would only let Elvis record it if he owned the rights to the song. Dolly refused to sell the song of course and the rest is history. She tells the story that when he called it was the happiest day and when he hung up it was the saddest day.
@recycleroftrees Dolly Parton wrote this song, and it is the only song to ever hit number one twice with two releases....so suck on that. Whitney Houston took the same and gave it her own distinct spin, but let's face facts, this song is and always will be Dolly's/
@RyanCooleyFanx wish you wouldn't mention that houston dame... she made a mockery of this song when she went public about Kevin Costners tongue being in her mouth when making the film "Bodyguard" ... she ruined that film with her lousey acting and comments and shinanigans with Bobby Brown and their drug habits... and now you say she made a song written by Dolly Parton famous? Houston is enough to make a normal person vomit.
my love for vince and dolly remain as a singer songwriter and achieved the highest Juno of Canada I am Mishi Donovan on u tube as well and it would be the great gift to jam and hear my songs and share thanks for all you have inspired me to become
When i visited my cousins in Sevierville in the early 1950's and a really cute poor little girl was there most of the time playing.. I of course went my way and she went hers:if I could sing I would sing this song to that little girl Dolly....life is full of irony.
I think that if there were an alien lifeform came to earth and asked me, "take us to your best example of what a human being is", I would have to say they would need to go to Dolly Parton. She is a great person who, like another commenter pointed out, has rarely, if ever, had anything negative said or reported on her. She gives back MORE than her fair share to help those who aren't as fortunate as she is. Dolly is a national treasure.
My God Dolly can write a song that just rips your heart out. AMAZING talent. This song is soooo strong, I can only wish I were strong enough to say what id says and actually mean it.
Let me tell you folks, talent, humanitarianism, sweetness, looks...dadgummit she's a package that just cannot be duplicated! I loved her back in the '70's when I was a kid, and even nowadays I get weepy-eyed whenever I hear her sing anything: old, new, solo, or duet. They just don't make stars like her anymore. Have you EVER heard or read a bad thing about her? I know I never have. God bless her.
Whitney Houston gave it a good try, but, nobody, but, nobody, outdoes Dolly on this 1! Dolly and Vince hit #15 in Billboard, 11-25-95. God bless ya, Miss Dolly! Hugs to you!
My husband in heaven and all i can say is this my husband Ray I will always love you and someday I will see you again when Jesus comes to take me home with you love always your wife Diana miss you so much RIP 9-28-10 brithday 4-26-57
@cindylcain59 agreed. And Whitney owns the song in a completely different way. But, It will FOREVER be known as Dolly's song. No one can capture the actually heart ache and hurt that she captured in this song.
I love this. I wish Dolly had rights to her T.V. performances and could put out a High-Def DVD. I wish there was a good quality video of this! It's 1995 you'd think there would be. I just got the "Dolly Live in London" Laserdisc, and was mortified by the broadcast quality standards back then. Lucy & Desi got it right when they filmed everything, no video. Poor Dolly!
Man can you believe that was 15 years ago? I can't. Seems like yesterday! This is my favorite version of the song...Vince can sing so well! Their voices sound heavenly...
Great Dolly line: 'I had some success with this song, and I opened a Bank account...a few years back Whitney Huston recorded the song, and I bought the Bank!!'
I can appreciate Whitney's powerful vocals - they are truly impressive - but the original version of this song (written & performed by Dolly in 1973) has always been my favorite because she sings it with so much emotion. I always get misty-eyed because you can tell she really puts her heart into it. Vince Gill was a perfect choice for a duet - his voice complements hers very nicely. :-)
I'm sorry but if you know anything about country you know that Dolly Parton WAS, IS, and ALWAYS will be the BEST female singer of all time!!! nope, taylor swift, miley cyrus, and whoever else is on the cover of the magazines these days dont even scratch the surface. AMEN to good ol country music!
Just that there are so many great singers these days, too many to count! So saying she'll is and will always be the best one for me is pretty conservative and even a bit close minded. Opinion's free though!
@foreverwaiting2010 This is considered the best country song ever on my lists, it has been a hit by Dolly no less than 3 times! As she always jokes when she first recorded it she made a lot of money, then she made even more when it was in the 1982 film "Best Little Whorehouse In Texas", but when Whitney recorded she just bought the bank! She made over $12 million within the first year of Whitney version.
@foreverwaiting2010 This is considered the best country song ever on many lists, it has been a hit by Dolly no less than 3 times! If I was up there singing this song with Dolly....I would never make it all the way through....I would be crying like a little baby.... just to be standing next to her with the honor to sing with her....I would break down....I love this woman...great singer actress, great woman all around
People who are not fans of Clasic Country music, don't realize that this song is Dolly's song. She wrote it for Porter Wagoner and She recorded it first, and it was a big hit on the country charts, long before Whitney Houston sang this song.
Although this was a great performance, I prefer the energy when they did this song a few weeks earlier at the Grand Ole Opry for the first time live. I wish somebody would post that version cuz Dolly had a really awesome reaction to Vince's live vocals of her song.
i walk this guy and it hard thing i do in my life and i am better off with him and he always in hurt and will always remember our first kiss in the his front porch and we had our ups and downs and I've said some things that I'd shouldn't have and me and him are better each other way and me and him are not good for each other and we always have conecticut between three kids.
This is really nice song for me. i love the singers, the version and the crowd. MABUHAY!

The perfect song sang by the girl who felt it most. Nobody does it like Dolly. Great duo, though.

I got to see Dolly do this live at the Grand Ole Opry this past October....I will never forget it....still gives me chills to think of it!

Their voices sound so perfect together. There are no other two people who could have sung this duet any better than this.

This is Dolly's song, and only Dolly's song, not Whitney's...point made!...goosebumps every time.
cindylcain59 1 year ago
@cindylcain59 agreed. And Whitney owns the song in a completely different way. But, It will FOREVER be known as Dolly's song. No one can capture the actually heart ache and hurt that she captured in this song.

I love this. I wish Dolly had rights to her T.V. performances and could put out a High-Def DVD. I wish there was a good quality video of this! It's 1995 you'd think there would be. I just got the "Dolly Live in London" Laserdisc, and was mortified by the broadcast quality standards back then. Lucy & Desi got it right when they filmed everything, no video. Poor Dolly!

@rtcrud- pretty conservative? curious to know what you menat by that? not trying to start anything :)!

@foreverwaiting2010

If I was up there singing this song with Dolly....I would never make it all the way through....I would be crying like a little baby.... just to be standing next to her with the honor to sing with her....I would break down....I love this woman...great singer actress, great woman all around

theres only one dolly, she is fabulous and those are her real boobs too. what a woman. best singer ever!!

Dolly always made singing this incrediable song look so effortless. Vince Gill was honestly in awe of her as she sang the chorus solo. So was I.

I think this is the performance where Vince joked they picked him to sing because he was the only guy who could sing higher than Dolly!
