What you are seeing is not a 100% real "VW PASSAT" but a mocked up version of the Czech built SKODA SUPERB. Vee-Dub did a good gob: invest $1b in a new factory in the US to built SKODA SUPERBs and (re)badge them as VW PASSATs and sell them for just under $20k. The 2.5 V5 170HP is obsolete, the 3.6 FSI 280HP is too "Un-American" and the 2.0 TDI 140 HP too weak. Enjoy your "new" PASSAT's...!!!
Advice from Germany: VWs TDI engines are the most durable you can get. Just use the best oil you can get, (DON'T buy cheap oil!) regularly check the oil level, and your VW will never abandon you.
7 engines, a few of which would not sell well here in the US for a variety of reasons. I've just ordered a new Golf TDI, which is known as the Golf 2.0 TDI in Europe, where there is a choice of a smaller, 1.6l diesel engine with even better mpg, and a "GTI" version, known as the GTD. All of these engines would have to go through the same federal tests, so it comes down to sales volume and cost of federalizing, along with other marketing considerations.
GTI and GTD are two different things my friend. GTI is a petrol engine and GTD stands for turbocharged diesel engine, but without the intercooler. (TDI - turbo diesel intercooler)

I have an 05 Jetta wagon TDI ,I bought it to haul my dogs Katie&Lucky with me were ever i go.I hope that one day i can get a brand new one. I have 200,000 km on it and take very good care of it,I am now a die hard VW fan!
All, not only is the TDI engine superb, but when I sold my old one for a new one, I got hits on the TDI club website in 15 minutes and sold it for far more than I thought I could!
My 2004 Jetta TDI just had it's 140K service. I get almost 40 MPG around town, and 45+ on the highway. Easily over 500 miles on a tank; almost Portland OR to Reno NV on one tank of gas (er, diesel)...!!
Love the car, will drive it for my commute as long as I have a commute.
GAS: 1.4 TSI 120hp, 1.8 Tsi 158 hp, 2.0 tsi 207 hp, 3.6 V6 (4wd) 295 hp Diesel: 2.0 tdi 138 hp, 2.0ctdi 167 hp so actually these are six engines available. I converted the kilowatt into hp, for litres into cubic inch you have to find out yourself :)
@ZingZiggyZang I dont get the fact that the europeans cars that end up in the states have much bigger engines? I understand why we have smaller engines in europe due to the price of fuel, but if USA preach about european cars not being able to satisfy your demands for pollution control, what justifies having a larger more polluting engine? (P.S. i'm no tree hugger hippy, i love V8's and anything with decent power and less plastic)
@1700iDiGuy If you are talking about the 12 VW passat it is a different car for the US. The 12 passat has a cleaner engine you can compare it side by side to the Jetta which has a different fuel delivery system, which you can read about here:Big people, big distance, large families, lots of stuff equal desire for large cars. Heck even Europeons understand comfort, it just costs too much there.
@1700iDiGuy I live in the USA and would love to be able to buy the European diesel cars. However, we cannot get them here. We are extremely limited on cars that offer diesel engines. Unless you want to pay over $40,000 your only option is the VW line. And our VWs do not offer the best fuel savings. American car companies do not offer diesel engines except for a few large pickup trucks. Oil companies rule here. They push hybrids here, not diesels. Sucks.
This is a different car, it's not a german car, it's more an American car, also the engine range is different. i'm sure that you cannot chose the 2.5 petrol engine in Europe.
@horatium16 You're absolutely right that the US car market is different than the European one. For the cars Audi and co. have two different production lines, one for the export to US/CA and one for Europe. The Americans get more powerful engines, bigger length and and nearly full equipped cars for much lower price. Shit.
@Scuderianurburgring Germany is a wonderful country. One thing I found out about Germany and was like "WHOA" is that the age of consent was 14. Over in Europe things like that are a bit different huh?

Volkswagen opposes key European laws that we need if we're going to save our planet from climate change.
All is not lost. We feel the good in Volkswagen. Help us turn VW away from the Dark Side.

Thanks, I am fully aware of this. Just replace "GTI" with "high performance" in my original paragraph - which is what I was implying. Thanks though.

And you will also blow piston rings in cyl 1-3 give or take... it gives you alot of fun when it hesitates due to engine failure ;)

W8 is a 8 cylinder Engine 244 cubic inch, 270hp, 272.86lb/ft. It's shorter and lighter than a conventional V8. This way it fits into smaller cars.
