you can't maintain a population in a zoo, outside it's natural habitat where natural breeding would occur, let's remember the main reason they're endangered in the first place is because their habitat is beind destroyed by the ridiculous ammount of chinese that keep reproducing

With results from new researches we are able to make pandas reproduce more succesfully and make sure all babies survive, which does not happen in the wild. And now it's not the right time yet to send pandas back into wild because wild population is probably saturated.

This is in the WoLong reserve (not a zoo, and Chinese zoos dont pay a lot of money for Pandas), they are not far from their mothers. and fyi, Panda's don't tend their babies very well.

okay this sort of depend on how you interprete how big is the "single biggest". It is true habitat is the most pressing issue right now, but Pandas were not common even in ancient times way before people started to clear out their habitat for agricultural reasons.

And for the habitat issue, if we release captive ones back into the environment, they will most likely die, because the population is saturated.
