too much bouncing from the ground.and I would not prefer nike free runners for long run, I'm using asics gel 3030. btw great video, just one thing which I did not like :)))
I have had issues with running for years since i got Achilles tendonosis due to poor training, and after this video i see that my form was definitely a contributing factor. I am already running pain free again after following your tips, thank you.
Just read the nytimes article on barefoot running, and I love the concept. I have hip aches when I run; I have also gotten a stress fracture when training for a marathon. Thanks for such a detailed video on technique and training hints...can't wait to try this!
my heel does not hit the ground when using the midfoot stroke. is it necesasry for the heel to touch the ground or is it just as efficient to barely brush the ground?
Also, the speeds of the runners in the videos are very low, can this technique be extended to faster runs? Champion long distance runners seem to take much longer strides?
@trainwitheric Yeah thanks, it's good to see it in action, Eric. I've never run any other way, for the simple reason that I haven't run since childhood and when I started up again 4 months ago I ran barefoot or minimalist, which helps the whole forefoot thing. These excercises help because they allow me to correct the flaws in my form. So thanks again!
This is, for me, the best video I have ever seen on long distance running. I only run 8km a day most days although I have run a half marathon. I am switching to this non-heel strike (new phrase?) running and this video is absolutely the most helpful I have come across. As we say in Australia, goodonyer, digger, yer blood's worth bottling.
great! thanks so much! I just told my running partner this morning how much I wish I had a running mentor...well, youtube will have to do! I'm a stay at home mom who just likes to run. I always have, but I've never been good at it. my mom has always lectured me about how running is too hard on my body. I was so excited to come across born to run and the such to see that we can do it- for life! I really appreciate the help that your video offers. thanks!!
The hamstring isn't unnatural though-- it's used for pulling the foot up which uses less energy when running than by pulling the leg up which makes use of core muscles and hip flexors to an extreme amount. Ease of movement is what helps.
The problem I have with high knees and the stabilizer exercise in this video is that it advocates using the hip flexors to pull the knee up which results a thigh position much higher than needed. It's impractical in running to do this and creates tension in the hip flexors.
Look at runners like ryan hall and other top marathoners. pulling the knee up at the right time w/momentum causes the heel to naturally come through high (by butt) shortening the lengh of the leg as it swings forwad... making it swing faster and increasing frequency/speed. the only other option is to use the hamstring to pull the leg up which is unnatural. this may be less of an issue if running slower though, or ultra distances.
I'll definitely be referencing it over the coming months, just one question: In the "Stance Leg Power" - are you actually "pushing off" with your toes, and if not - to what end are your glute muscles exerting power?

Ryan Hall says a forefoot strike is inefficient and recommends a flat foot strike. He actually provides an explanation as to why. How do you respond?

@Carguello615 i saw the same thing kinda contradicts this i was wondering which is better or does it just depend on the runner

Very helpful for a beginner coach. Thanks alot! I noticed you were wearing Nike Free's do you reckon its helped your running wearing a free runner?
