All rush songs are on the same album of their lives with a break between every 6-12 songs with a title for each. All Rush is great to them and is to every true fan with ,of course, a favorite or two!!!!! Right now Counterparts,Fly By Night , and Snakes and arrows are tied for #1
Caress of Steel - Hemispheres are the best. Though Rush, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures are absolutely amazing as well. If that makes those amazing, there aren't words great enough to describe Caress of Steel - Hemispheres.
Geddy was at the top of his vocal screaming game - I think this is one of the best recordings of Hemispheres that I've ever heard. Many, many thanks - this was the first piece of music that I EVER bought, back in 4th grade!
you can hear geddy straining to hit the notes. Now before you guys start flamming. I love this band. But they talked about how they recorded the song before actually singing it and realized it was recorded to high for him to sing it and he had a hard time with it. Proubly by the time he did this show he was really burned out
you can hear geddy straining to hit the notes. Now before you guys start flamming. I love this band. But they talked about how they recorded the song before actually singing it and realized it was recorded to high for him to sing it and he had a hard time with it.
I would definately say that Rush peaked in the late 70s, they were at their best. I also love the 80s stuff but ultimately, being a prog rock fan, the late 70s will always be the best Rush era (for me)
5:23 (in this particular video) has always been my favorite part of the song. Gah... I can't even describe how much I appreciate this band and their music. I love Rush.
A Farewell To Kings & Hemispheres are Rush's finest pieces..... as is 2112 ... it's too bad Neil Peart thereafter strayed from this path... the next era was Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures which were good but not great ... and it's been downhill after that .... although Hole Your Fire was a classic...
Rush in the "Pop, Disco, Rap Hall Of Fame" There's more of these artists than Rock bands. The Fame is filled with a bunch of liberal-acid-taking freaks. Rush doesn't fit into that junk heap called the RORHOF. Madonna? RUN DMC? Even Rap artists. As Lifeson said, it's a joke. Rolling Stone Mag is just mad that Rush did it on their own with kick-ass music and no media outlet (i.e., RS Mag is useless). RS by inducting them would be confirming they (RS) are insignificant for a band's success.
@jgavinrn quote "They are not is the Rock hall of fame? That's bullshit! We need to give these guys a better push to get in the Rock Hall of fame." ... perhaps there needs to be a new "Hall of Fame" ... yes, I think there needs to be "Rush Hall of Fame" ... only music as good as RUSH can be permitted into the "RUSH Hall of Fame" ...let's just say the 'admission list' is exceedingly tiny!
I wish there was a recorded live version of this...possibly my favorite Rush song, hell, favorite song period. I'ma find a way to snag this off youtube.
Great, great band. The only thing I don't get is the story. A guy flies into a black hole (why? Is he bored or something?). It fucks him up (duh). Manages to make it through and finds some massive war going on that should've been in the movie HeavyMetal. Screams a little girly scream. And they make him a god? Just for showing up? How about: "Whoa, who the fuck is this guy?"."Don't know, but he's interrupting the war. Let's blast him out of the sky."
Well, I'M not mad, just want to make sure I'm not wasting my time or yours. I have a Rush video bio where the commentators had the same attitude, no real analysis.
The story uses Greek myths and Nietzsche's THE BIRTH OF TRAGEDY to tell a story of reason versus emotion (Apollo vs. Dionyus.) "The Battle of Heart and Mind" rips the world into "sorry hemipsheres." (Brain hemispheres.) Cygnus comes from an outside place, sees the division, and brings them balance between the two, hence the godhood. Neil took some liberties with mythology. So it's a condensed version of a very common topic in pschology and philosophy.
Well, I got all that (and thanks). But when you say condensed you ain't kidding. But then Neil couldn't go into some long exposition in the lyrics so naturally it's going to come out a bit disjointed (but the transition was nice 'dead but yet unborn'. Not bad, actually). What confuses me though is why he called the traveller's ship the Rocinante. Is that why he went into the black hole, to tilt at windmills? His qualification for godhood is thus suspect and Apollo less judgement than I thought.
Well, Rocinante...ask Neil, but probably; Cygnus X-1 does have a guy flying into a black hole, so there is something foolhardy there, and I do believe Hemispheres took the wind out of the band...The name Cygnus comes from the black hole, so they called the traveler Cygnus, from where he emerged... Ah well, it's poetry, doesn't have to make THAT much sense...
That's right. But Don Quixote was addled. Rocinante was a beat-up old nag. So the Don got his lance, mounted up and charged some wind mills thinking they were giants. If you name your ship Rocinante then it must be some rustbucket. So why would you go into a black hole in that? (Actually, it hardly matters, you're still fucked). I'm sure Neil got all that, so it must be some kind of irony he was shooting for. Apollo: "Dude, why would we make you a god? Look at that piece of shit you came in on!"
Yeah, there's never been another mysterious or non-plausible story in rock music before....
Come on, Neil is a storyteller, he was taken by astronomy, black holes and the mystery of where that matter goes, and obviously the power of mythology, not to mention his own struggles with balance. Be glad it's not just "Hey baby, it's a quarter to eight..."
Relax, I was just having a little fun. I was always a big fan and thanks to Neil I bought a set of used roto-toms (they sucked and I sold them off, but that's another story). And i like In the Mood. Back in the day songs off the first album were the only ones I could get my band to learn. "I get up at seven..." One...More...Time...
lol, high school garage band I was in specialized in early Rush, they taught me to play also (Geddy that is, bass guitar, later keys)...it is all good.
Love that 6-note chromatic descending bass solo in Working Man, so cool when you're 15 and think you've mastered the world...
btw I'm relaxed, had to defend Neil's myth making tho
This was my favorite band growing up and considering their longevity, quality of albums and that the same three guys have been together for over 30 years I would have to say that RUSH is the best rock band ever. In a way they have transcend the rock and roll hall of fame. Thank for posting this great song.
I saw Rush in Toledo, Ohio the night after this show and they were phenomenal. Golden Earring opened up and they were also very good. Brings back a lot of memories.
wondrous, underestimated stuff, considering all the shite thats on show nowadays, can any band play stuff like this nowadays? especially with 3 musicians, the music says it all really....
First off all, I want to know who the hell rated this lower than 5 stars. Second, AMAZING! I never knew they played more than the Prelude and The Spheres live before. My favorite Rush song ever. If they would play this today, I wouldn't care if I'd die driving home. My life would be complete man. HEMISPHERES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
love the old anolog synths , looking back this was rough live certin parts hard to reproduce, still , totally great, Isaw this in chicago in 1980, my first rush show , they sold out 4 nites, iwas there the 2nd nite
@fanofthemusic1090 yeah also i have a poster of them playing a hemispheres song live with the 12 string guitars but in the cd pictures geddy has 6 string bass which confuses me it which on is right but i definatly think it's a 12 string bass
Who remembers the projection screen video during this live performance of Book II: The Spheres? I saw it in Dallas and remember the little rocket ship sailing through space, the shimmering metallic man falling through shimmering colored space, also at the end they had two brain hemispheres slowly coming towards each other above some clouds in a blue sky and when the hemispheres came together, the song was at its end. Wow. What do YOU remember about the film. Help me out here!
Fantastic :) ... that takes me back , sitting on a parafin heater in my wee chilly Scottish bedroom as a spotty 15 year old ... lost in Hemispheres / 2112 ..... On a wee mono record player !!! kids today dont know their born :)..... Great times , A musical education , thanks
Thanks so much for posting this...I saw them do this piece in it's entirety many years ago. It is truly incredible. I've been waiting 30 years to hear a decent version live...you made that possible. Thanks so much again!!!
In my church bell-ringing group we do this in its entirety, preceded by Cygnus. It wakes up the good G*d-fearing folk for Sunday mass yes-siree sir it does!
There are a lot of bootlegs out there, if you can obtain one, you can easily go around and trade for some of the most rare findings ever. Its a strong business for those who are fanatics
To whomever posted this. Thank you, thank you. I didn't discover rush until a few years after this but I wish I could've been able to attend one of these earlier shows. We are fortunate to still be able to see these guys play live, with a high level of musicianship, in 2008. They just don't make'em like Rush anymore.
I saw this tour and it was great...and believe it or not, I actually now own the actual acoustic guitar he plays at the end of the song. To hear it being played live is an incredible treat for me. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!
Hiwatt! Think The Who. Townshend was using Hiwatt and Rush were a big fan of The Who. Such a great, sweathog (Zappa coined that term) midrange type guitar sound that sounds like it's parametric sweepable midrange, unlike Marshall's which are passive EQ. It would have been great to see them but I was only 12 years old at the time and hadn't even heard Rush for another couple of years.

Some of the most beautiful words I've ever heard set to music..
I have memory and awareness
But I have no shape or form
As a disembodied spirit
I am dead and yet unborn
I have passed unto Olympus
As was told in tales of old
To the city of immortals
Marble white
And purest Gold

I believe it is a line mix from the sound board.
No doubt a great many shows are recorded and floating about. I have several " bootlegs " from the test For Echo tour and R30.
I don't really know how they get them. They being Dead Heds.
Those guys are always swapping shows. I asked my buddy if he had any Rush stuff, live and he asked, " what tour would you like. "
