Any club chess player knows that in a simul the featured player always plays white on every board, and the boards are in plain view of everyone else. This is to prevent tricks such as the one Derek pulled. So at least half the experts in the video knew about the scam right away.
@undeadnightorc yeah just like their poker trick was bull too... they survive with that shit because thy know that their average audience is usually the average couch potato with no clue about that stuff
Considering their world acknowledged ranks for chess, more than likely they have played each other before. This would serve as another reason he paired those together that he did <-- (The score predictions). Then of course it comes down to his memeory to play the moves of the corresponding player, as well as beating table 9 (which he probably used a set of moves from a match the opponent played in against another player.

loistelijas video :) Uskon ettei oo mitenk??n feikki, vaan? ihmismieli on varmasti arvaamaton ja tutkimaton paikka :) Itsesuggestiolla saa paljon aikaan.
No the guy was president of the chess club, so he lied when he said he had 9 of England's best players. Also the simul giver can not just walk away from the board after the 1st set of white's play their moves. This should have been a clear sign to the 1st 4 people that something funny is going on.
This trick is very old, there is an old russian story about a chess club doing this to a master, one guy playing white, then the other black and copying each other. The master played moves so bad, the beginners tried to win and play on their own, and then when they got won games the master excused himself to the bathroom and snuck out the window!
Memorizing each tables chess moves and coming out the winner requires much more than average memory. Even if that statement of yours is true I don't really think many would care :( Derren has made an obscene level of money, if it's so "average" do it yourself.
The difference is that memory techniques can be learned and practiced, as Derren has. Unfortunately these memory techniques are no longer taught. Those who have taken the time to learn and master them appear as utterly astounding even before taking into account showmanship.

His "technique" would hold up for about 1 or perhaps 2 moves. Speaking as a chess player I can truthfully say that his explaination is utter bullshit.
Too bad he didn't actually get the number correct, do to a Master being better than Derron Brown had foreseen and thusly was able to beat one of the GrandMaster.
this is a true thing that happens! its not a chain letter! its kinda scary at first but it really works!! paste this message into 3 comments and press ALT F4 and your crushes name will appear on the screen!!! its soo wierd!
I think they knew beforehand what was going on and were just acting. This is a known trick that has been used several times. Some of these masters are so good (and know each other so well) that, even if they hadn't been told, they could have easily guessed the trick: not only the core but, by the opening moves and style, who they were actually playing. Nice presentation and good promotion of chess, though. I actually liked the video...but I think it's fake. :)
IQ is not only IQ tests. You said something about imagination factor. With chess u can excercise your imagination, by predicting your opponents' moves.
Are you kidding me. Darren Brown would be able to impliment this "strategy" for the first 5 moves, maybe 10, as no good chess player's would ever play the exact same games. So their is only two ways Darron Brown could have done this, first he could be a very strong gm(2700+ in rating), second he had computer assistance(much more likly). Another theory, the room could be dissorianting to anyone who is sitting 0_o.
Are you kidding me. His "strategy" would only work for 5 moves, maybe 10 moves maximum, as no strong players would repeat the same moves for the intire game. So after those opening moves he would have to play them on his own. And to get the results he did he would have to be a very strong gm(2700+ in rating) or be using computer assistence(much more likly). Another theory, the room is dissorianting to anyone who is sitting 0_o
you couldnt use that strategy if you became a chess wizz. it takes more than knowing how to play chess to do that. it takes months to learn something like that.
You don't know how determined I am. I will learn the strategy and employ it; even if it is the last thing I do. You don't know this but my IQ is 150 (serious) and I am very good at puzzles, mind games, games, etc.
this trick really isn't that crazy. i've used a computer program to beat chessmasters online by copying its moves when i was 14, exactly the same concept is employed here. i'm surprised none of the chessmasters figured it out.
1) He couldnt have actually predicted it, as he wasnt really playing.. Therefore, it couldnt have been in the mans pocket. Therefore, he must have changed it while handling the paper at the end. His movements are really suspicious here, and it looks like there is a paper behind the right side, when he unfolds it.
When the guy opens the envelope watch Derren carefully, he walks up to him and replaces the guys paper with his own. It's a brilliant piece of misdirection.
Nope... the dude grabs the piece of paper out of the envelope and derren asks him for the envolope. So unless the guy is in on the prank he definitely grabbed the letter out of the envelope and held onto it. again, unless he is in on it, darren wouldn't have been able to grab something out of his hands and replace it with something else. it's possible that there were some hang out moments as everthing was being set up that and darren pick-pocketed him. very possible.
Yes, the part where he has to help the gentlemen with the envelope and paper at the 7:00 mark is suspicious. Remember, Derron is right-handed (as seen when he writes on the board). At the 7:00 mark he is reaching out to get the envelope with his left-hand, even though his better right hand is closer to it. By using his left hand to grab the envelope he is able to cover whatever his right hand is doing from the cameras and the spectator's in the room.
Amazing, though I wished he explained how he got those numbers at the end. What made it more realistic is the fact he did actually get 1 number incorrect. That being said the fact he got the rest correct is pretty impressive ^_^!

Derren needed no chess ability, but he did need a fantastic memory.
And he got it all right first time - there were no retakes.
Of course he paired the GMs together, so guaranteeing he would score 50% against them.
