  • at first i thought this was sherlock holmes

  • "Derren" is the correct spelling of his first name, not "Derron" as shown in the title.

  • lol chess is a kids game to me

  • @cisco760ca

"I have no time for an easily mastered game like Chess"

    - Guybrush Threepwood

  • i think that maybe the sheet of paper had several other numbers on it and he just rearranged it when he grab the paper.

  • Nice.

  • Any club chess player knows that in a simul the featured player always plays white on every board, and the boards are in plain view of everyone else. This is to prevent tricks such as the one Derek pulled. So at least half the experts in the video knew about the scam right away.

  • @undeadnightorc yeah just like their poker trick was bull too... they survive with that shit because thy know that their average audience is usually the average couch potato with no clue about that stuff

  • There is actually no need for a ''fantastic memory'' simple memory technique would suffice...

  • derren is awesome. he is so real. no setups or anything.

  • fake!

  • Derren needed no chess ability, but he did need a fantastic memory.

And he got it all right first time - there were no retakes.

Of course he paired the GMs together, so guaranteeing he would score 50% against them.

  • Considering their world acknowledged ranks for chess, more than likely they have played each other before. This would serve as another reason he paired those together that he did <-- (The score predictions). Then of course it comes down to his memeory to play the moves of the corresponding player, as well as beating table 9 (which he probably used a set of moves from a match the opponent played in against another player.

  • I just dont find this werry probebole, chess is a game with so manny possibiletys, there is somthing he is not telling us

  • wow, i wish i had such memory skills Oo

1 wrong move and the whole trick would've gone wrong - really impressive.

  • wOW ! YOU ARE so Inteligent !

    Smart 1 x intellect 0

  • Check out , "Relapse " 2-player board game by Jeffery A. Krueger

  • ...funny f*cker!(?!?)

  • On the end with "I can`t remember" ... I would kill him lol

  • oh, and it's derren, with an e

  • Have you read Sidney Sheldon's If Tomorrow Comes. It's exactly the same trick he did.

  • yes it is, it's an old idea don't know if sheldon originated it though, be interesting to find out

  • how about he plays with kasparove?

  • the one on number 9 must be very stupid to lose to him, he is the one who made the whole team lose

  • That's the part Derren Brown isn't telling anyone. Do you seriously think the one on table 9 would really lose to a non-player?

  • maybe... maybe not heh

  • I actually knew that! When he didn't play his move the first time around I guessed. The 1st one I've gotten. That was pretty sweet though.

  • Robert Chan sure laughs weird. Like a stereotypical chess nerd.

  • How did he beat Robert in the real game ...thats what I'd like to know....Robert is still Fide Master or something exotic

  • No the guy was president of the chess club, so he lied when he said he had 9 of England's best players. Also the simul giver can not just walk away from the board after the 1st set of white's play their moves. This should have been a clear sign to the 1st 4 people that something funny is going on.

  • This trick is very old, there is an old russian story about a chess club doing this to a master, one guy playing white, then the other black and copying each other. The master played moves so bad, the beginners tried to win and play on their own, and then when they got won games the master excused himself to the bathroom and snuck out the window!

  • Exactly. The matching is good fun, but how did he beat the 9th guy? THAT is the real question.

  • Yeah man, you and I are the only ones to question this! well spotted..

  • how the hell does he manage to remember the moves in 4 pairs all the time...

    thats really hard.

but weirdly, simple how he plays them against eachother isnt it?

    awesome

  • Memorizing each tables chess moves and coming out the winner requires much more than average memory. Even if that statement of yours is true I don't really think many would care :( Derren has made an obscene level of money, if it's so "average" do it yourself.

  • The difference is that memory techniques can be learned and practiced, as Derren has. Unfortunately these memory techniques are no longer taught. Those who have taken the time to learn and master them appear as utterly astounding even before taking into account showmanship.

  • well then you are either suck completely at chess or is retarded.

go back and watch it again.

  • This clip is NOT from episode 6 of season 3,

it is from episode 1 of season 1

  • "My chess, is shit!"

  • awesome!

  • Too bad he didn't actually get the number correct, do to a Master being better than Derron Brown had foreseen and thusly was able to beat one of the GrandMaster.

  • the theme music sounds like music from spiderman

  • to me 00:00-00:08 sounded like star wars

  • Derren is such a joker.

  • he's a clever bastard

  • what u can't remmeber how you got the nubmers?!?!?

  • Ye, that was annoying! lol

  • I think they knew beforehand what was going on and were just acting. This is a known trick that has been used several times. Some of these masters are so good (and know each other so well) that, even if they hadn't been told, they could have easily guessed the trick: not only the core but, by the opening moves and style, who they were actually playing. Nice presentation and good promotion of chess, though. I actually liked the video...but I think it's fake. :)

  • how much have you guys paid for the chess gm to become actors? hehe

  • My IQ is 183, and I spend all time watching porn. Go figure...

  • wait so watching makes ur IQ go up? ima try it

  • IQ is not only IQ tests. You said something about imagination factor. With chess u can excercise your imagination, by predicting your opponents' moves.

  • im stupid.

  • Are you kidding me. Darren Brown would be able to impliment this "strategy" for the first 5 moves, maybe 10, as no good chess player's would ever play the exact same games. So their is only two ways Darron Brown could have done this, first he could be a very strong gm(2700+ in rating), second he had computer assistance(much more likly). Another theory, the room could be dissorianting to anyone who is sitting 0_o.

  • What is gm 2700+ in rating?

  • Are you kidding me. His "strategy" would only work for 5 moves, maybe 10 moves maximum, as no strong players would repeat the same moves for the intire game. So after those opening moves he would have to play them on his own. And to get the results he did he would have to be a very strong gm(2700+ in rating) or be using computer assistence(much more likly). Another theory, the room is dissorianting to anyone who is sitting 0_o

  • What? Think of Derren as just a message passer between two games. They can't fall out of synch.

  • i dont think u understand, watch it again

  • What a freakin genius. So basically the people were playing themselves. What a STRATEGY!!! Wow, goosebumps.

  • I wish I can employ this strategy. Maybe one day when I become a chess whiz, I will employ this strategy.

  • you couldnt use that strategy if you became a chess wizz. it takes more than knowing how to play chess to do that. it takes months to learn something like that.

  • You don't know how determined I am. I will learn the strategy and employ it; even if it is the last thing I do. You don't know this but my IQ is 150 (serious) and I am very good at puzzles, mind games, games, etc.

  • I think Darren Brown copied their moves simultanelously.. so they basically played each other.. Darren just moved the piece

  • you're right.

  • He did do that, he even said it flat out in this episode.

  • Derren Brown is freakin brilliant. He's even gracious enough to give some sort of explanation unlike other magicians.

  • this trick really isn't that crazy. i've used a computer program to beat chessmasters online by copying its moves when i was 14, exactly the same concept is employed here. i'm surprised none of the chessmasters figured it out.

  • 1) He couldnt have actually predicted it, as he wasnt really playing.. Therefore, it couldnt have been in the mans pocket. Therefore, he must have changed it while handling the paper at the end. His movements are really suspicious here, and it looks like there is a paper behind the right side, when he unfolds it.

  • condidering how good of a pick pocket he was in the other vid.. won't be too surprice

  • The answer to this is simple.

When the guy opens the envelope watch Derren carefully, he walks up to him and replaces the guys paper with his own. It's a brilliant piece of misdirection.

  • But, at what point does he write the numbers down, remains as a question.

  • That's going to remain a mystery, but I'm guessing any of his camera crew or team could have observed the games and handed it to him at some point.

  • True.

  • Nope... the dude grabs the piece of paper out of the envelope and derren asks him for the envolope. So unless the guy is in on the prank he definitely grabbed the letter out of the envelope and held onto it. again, unless he is in on it, darren wouldn't have been able to grab something out of his hands and replace it with something else. it's possible that there were some hang out moments as everthing was being set up that and darren pick-pocketed him. very possible.

  • the switch definitely didn't happen when he grabbed the ripped envelope from the guy.... the guy was holding the paper by that time.

There is some fishy business as derron is "helping" the guy open it. Rewatch that part and there maybe a clue. 6:55

  • Yes, the part where he has to help the gentlemen with the envelope and paper at the 7:00 mark is suspicious. Remember, Derron is right-handed (as seen when he writes on the board). At the 7:00 mark he is reaching out to get the envelope with his left-hand, even though his better right hand is closer to it. By using his left hand to grab the envelope he is able to cover whatever his right hand is doing from the cameras and the spectator's in the room.

  • @mosostow I don't see him replace anything, what the hell are you talking about?

  • @mosostow Thanks! I'm totally sleeping tonight! Guys, you can see at 7:04 or so, he flips over the paper.

  • hahaha cant remember

  • thanks for uploading man

    respek

  • thats impressive i just wish he said how he predicted the number!

  • i read this technique in a book ages ago but to see it performed to this level is phenomenal

  • :| that guy is so cheap!! i have to remember that if i play 2 ppl at the same time :P

  • holy cow, that's kick ass

  • he is funny and awesome!

  • absaloutle genious

  • Amazing, though I wished he explained how he got those numbers at the end. What made it more realistic is the fact he did actually get 1 number incorrect. That being said the fact he got the rest correct is pretty impressive ^_^!
