my parents have played woody guthries songs to me since such a young age - this man is my heart and soul even now i feel his songs inside of me- he is a great inspiration
As I went walking I saw a sign there And on the sign it said "No Trespassing." But on the othe side it didn't say nothing, That side was made for you and me. In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people, By the relief office I seen my people; As they stood hungry, I stood there asking Is this land made for you and me? Nobody living can ever stop me, As I go walking that freedom highway; Nobody living can ever make me turn back This land was made for you and me.
Umm.. Actually this song is about Manifest Destiney. The "voice" is the people of America who want it. And it talks about the war with Mexico. That my friends is what this song is about.
@koertje Yes, But I think what the song means is that the land is for everyone. Even though the American Indians were there first, I think one of the points in this song is that no one owns any land and that we belong to it :)
funny how this version cuts out the fourth and sixth stanzas of the original lyrics that he wrote. Just another example of dumbass Americans appropriating something and using it for their own interests.
So you are telling me im lucky to be an american.when being on a benifits check and a govenment suppliement check they can tell me what i can and cannot do or i will lose 60%of my income..i cant even afford a car....my income has not went up in almost 3 yrs but prices of everything is going up..as far as freedom......anymore.......we are not as free as all of you foreigners think we are!!
Isn't this a pro union song wanting better rights for the workers of our nation. Didn't woody sing this song in front of the capitol and goverment buildings as a protest song. What's the bickering about. Fantastic song.
@1001fam Woody was certianly pro union and pro common people. If I remember right he came from the Dust Bowl days of Oklahoma. Woody was agead of his time in that he didnt care for labels. RIP Woody
@rockinrobintweets I'm pro "union" but not for the current system the US has made for unions. Unions in the US are just bullies who cut out the little guy.
@a1rh3add PLEASE! Do you actually think the private sector has the best interests of workers in mind? They are sitting on record profits, outsourcing U.S. jobs, and the majority of jobs created since the recession are for positions less than $15 per hour. Those are not middle-class sustaining wages that unions have a long history of fighting for on behalf of Americans.
For everyone who points out the faults of America to oppose the patriotic message of the song, look up the complete song. The last verse leaves no doubt that Guthrie knew the country was imperfect. After all, it was inspired by an even more desperate period than the present. Guthrie lost his farm to the Dust Bowl and was homeless for several years.
@Swemba I have been to America and saw the injustice that people in your country have to suffer, I am from Scotland and if you would like i could rally through everything that Scotland has given too the world add to the fact that you are not even a real American you are just some imigrant who's ancestors stole land from the real Americans
@Swemba yeah way to diss the UK nothing says civilised society like killing your prisoners, Plato once said you judge a society buy the way it treats its lowest citizens, your poor cant afford basic health care and you murder criminals, no one has the right to take anothers life. Have a look at your "free society" and see just how much like prisoners you all are
@cameron997 lols where are you from so I can compare? Every poor person in this country has a car and a cell-phone. Minus the homeless, but that is a tiny percentage and they are everywhere. Mostly felons. I'm guessing your from the UK because only UK 'cuntiness' stands against capital punishment of murderers. I don't even notice. Doesn't hurt my freedom. Pretty easy to avoid it, don't kill anybody. Not hard to do. YouTube and the internet was invented in America so you can git' out.
@PureTrancee lol, the only good thing to come from the UK is Top Gear and the Who. I've been there. London couldn't hold it's candle to NYC on any day. Everything is expensive, fuel is rediculous. Nothing is open past 5pm due to UK laziness. There are cameras everywhere and speed traps on the highways. No such thing as open road. Not to mention the Rioters. I'm glad I have my gun. No riotter is going to touch me or my family. My rich american ass scoffs at your cuntiness.
@Swemba New York is tame and boring in comparison with London. I was in a NY nightclub NYE 2001 - talk about tame! Things ARE open in London beyond 5pm and fuel is expensive because it should be - it is a scarce resource and a pollutant - idiot. Yes, we have had a riot - but I remember USA in the 60's. Riots nearly tore your country apart. And we dont regularly have lunatics shooting people at random. And we can spell! And what the fuck is 'cuntiness'?
@pogmathon100 "fuel is a scarce resource and a polutant" lol see 'cuntiness'. If you want to buy a futon, a video game, and pizza at 3PM on a wednesday, you do it in America, and not just in one city, almost anywhere in the nation. It's cheap too. A thousand dollar camera in America is about 1400 in the UK. Wal-Mart baby. Not to mention your more of a tiny island nation anyway, it's like arguing with someone from Guam. Oh and all your movies and music sucks. Thanks for Oi!, shit sucks.
@Swemba My apologies, I hadnt realised what a dickhead I was dealing with. If you want to buy cheap trash at midnight you should stay in one of your 'malls'. If you want culture then you should visit the UK and other parts of Europe. You will find that England has flexible opening hours in comparison with most european countries (try Germany for the 'lange Samstag' for instance) but what does that really matter? Yes, you probably do play with very big guns - now what is that a substitute for?
I'm gonna shoot you guys straight: that was just to get your attention, and I'm copying and pasting this wherever the hell I can. But I got four songs on my channel--WAIT, just wait--I got four songs that I'm really proud of, and you should check them out. They're about drownings and coal mines and porn stars and space travel.
So anyway: Man, I love this music video/song/clip of a guy getting bit in the crotch by a dog! "Friday" sucks! That last comments was gay!
If you like this song you may be a true blue democrate who has the strong nature of a republican who can not shake your socialist soul which is only inspired by democracy and capitalism that drives only to finally realize that the blood that runs through your viens is as red as soviet russian. Basically it's all bullshit. Except for the music. Which is great.

@TheEmoTronROBOTx Perhaps you should read up on different political philosophies to understand what communism truly is and not what it can be adulterated into.
@appledemilo yup he was, and it reflects in this song. (the uncensored one.) there was a big wall there that tried to stop me; sign was painted, it said private property; but on the backside it didn't say nothing; that side was made for you and me. in the shadow of the steeple i saw my people; by the relief office i seen my people; as they stood there hungry , i stood there asking is this land made for you and me?
@appledemilo nobody living can ever stop me, as i go walking that freedom highway; nobody living can ever make me turn back this land was made for you and me.
those three verses signify his political alignment, he identifies with those poor and destitute. god damned commie. lol.
@phatcracker2007 Unfortunately, the song is socialist in nature. In reality, the country is most certainly not made for you and me if you're a black person in a ghetto and I'm a white person in a suburb.
@Dominotheturtle There is an element of idealism within the song, that is very fitting for a national anthem. While it may not be completely realized in today's world, it encourages us all to strive towards the end goal. Not unlike the major religions of the world, comrade.
@a1rh3add What does that even mean? Too socialist? John Locke (who was the philosopher that our nation was basically founded upon) was a Socialist-Libertarian.
This is a beautiful song, and sums up everything I love about America.
@a1rh3add ... and I agree with that statement, but I think too socialist is silly to say.
I think that this song is about that original vision of a free society, where we take care of each other and value things like education and the well being of our fellow citizens, not to mention culture and creativity.
@LolCaramelz keep on fighting, but remember that even the mouths of idiots can speak wisdom. Politics are really starting to aggravate me because life isn't so left vs right, white vs black, or conservative vs liberal.
@darlincommitme I have heard this analysis before, but don't buy it completely. It's all about perspective. The song was written during the Great Depression, where 25% of the workforce was unemployed. There were many millions who experienced devastating, economic hardship, while a small minority experienced great wealth. Guthrie's perspective was that of one who opposed such a gulf in inequity.
Not sure why you think we disagree. Of course he was opposing inequality. He was a socialist. That is why he rejected property rights (land belongs to everyone) and supported government programs like Roosevelt's New Deal. It certainly is not generally anti-government as 1982pencil says.
@ahajaig Very good question. I think that it is because the idea that land or property should be made public is threatening to the fabric of capitalist ideology. Communism is the boogie man! All histories are selective - and the history of this song, both as it is received and recited, is no different.
Woody Guthrie's message in his song, "This Land is You Land", was to tell people that we should not discriminate. He felt sad about how western states did not want "Okies" taking their jobs for less pay. Sound familiar? He sang that the land is for everyone. Search above for Freddie Freak and Sones de Mexico's Spanish versions "Esta Tierra es Tuya" . They are relevent today (Between countries) as in the 30s (between U.S. states).
Woody Guthrie wrote this in 1940 It was inspired by the plight of “Okies,” displaced Great Plains farmers who were unwelcome in California when they sought work there during the 1930's Dust Bowl Depression Era. It was dramatized in the book and movie, The Grapes of Wrath. A Spanish version “Esta Tierra es Tuya” written by Sones de Mexico Ensemble is relevant 7 decades later and speaks of immigration. Try to recognize what the song is about; whether it is between states or countries.
To learn how to hear the hidden messages in Beatles songs, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read through the section about The Beatles.
Awwwwwww memories! I remember singing this song in grade school every morning. I'm going to cry. They should have told us Woody wrote this song. They should teach every child who Woody Guthrie was.

@phatcracker2007 This is too socialist for the US
a1rh3add 4 months ago
@a1rh3add What does that even mean? Too socialist? John Locke (who was the philosopher that our nation was basically founded upon) was a Socialist-Libertarian.
This is a beautiful song, and sums up everything I love about America.
leahceriello 3 months ago
@leahceriello Note that you said founded on. Since then the US has been hijacked by ultra conservative capitalist fascists.
a1rh3add 3 months ago
@a1rh3add ... and I agree with that statement, but I think too socialist is silly to say.
I think that this song is about that original vision of a free society, where we take care of each other and value things like education and the well being of our fellow citizens, not to mention culture and creativity.

@leahceriello You damned commie socialist!! XP

@LolCaramelz keep on fighting, but remember that even the mouths of idiots can speak wisdom. Politics are really starting to aggravate me because life isn't so left vs right, white vs black, or conservative vs liberal.
a1rh3add 3 months ago
@phatcracker2007 Actually, it probably shouldn't be ... the entire thing is an anti-government protest song. The lyrics are meant to be sarcastic.
1982pencil 3 months ago
@1982pencil
Not sarcastic at all - he is rejecting private property rights.
darlincommitme 3 months ago
@darlincommitme I have heard this analysis before, but don't buy it completely. It's all about perspective. The song was written during the Great Depression, where 25% of the workforce was unemployed. There were many millions who experienced devastating, economic hardship, while a small minority experienced great wealth. Guthrie's perspective was that of one who opposed such a gulf in inequity.
phatcracker2007 3 months ago
@phatcracker2007
Not sure why you think we disagree. Of course he was opposing inequality. He was a socialist. That is why he rejected property rights (land belongs to everyone) and supported government programs like Roosevelt's New Deal. It certainly is not generally anti-government as 1982pencil says.
darlincommitme 3 months ago
@1982pencil I respectfully disagree, friend. There is too much anger and passion in those lyrics to include any sarcasm.

And this:
In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?
ahajaig 7 months ago 3
Why are these two verses almost never included or taken out?
As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.
ahajaig 7 months ago 3
@ahajaig Very good question. I think that it is because the idea that land or property should be made public is threatening to the fabric of capitalist ideology. Communism is the boogie man! All histories are selective - and the history of this song, both as it is received and recited, is no different.

Woody Guthrie: the original topical folksinger He's the best. And Arlo was genius too. =P

They are relevent today (Between countries) as in the 30s (between U.S. states).
mexfolroa 7 months ago
Woody Guthrie wrote this in 1940 It was inspired by the plight of “Okies,” displaced Great Plains farmers who were unwelcome in California when they sought work there during the 1930's Dust Bowl Depression Era. It was dramatized in the book and movie, The Grapes of Wrath. A Spanish version “Esta Tierra es Tuya” written by Sones de Mexico Ensemble is relevant 7 decades later and speaks of immigration. Try to recognize what the song is about; whether it is between states or countries.

There was a big high wall there, that tried to stop me
A sign was painted, said "Private Property,"
But on the back side, it didn't say nothin'
This land was made for you AND me

Awwwwwww memories! I remember singing this song in grade school every morning. I'm going to cry. They should have told us Woody wrote this song. They should teach every child who Woody Guthrie was.
