Nice car. Wrong weels in my opinion. Anyway, when it comes to stuff like this, I was raised a hot rodder but when it comes to Impalas, I prefer the "beaner" variety. Again, it's just my opinion but I'd rather hot rod / 409 / tub / drag race a different body style. *Props to the hot rodders & lowriders but this will FOREVER be a lowrider's body style. Now notice how NICE I was so don't start being MEAN and insulting me ...
With exhaust cutouts that's EXACTLY how they sounded and ran back then. I guarantee it - I rode in one many times doing burnouts. The dual quad 425hp version was one baddassed street car.
Lovely and thanks for sharing a launch. In 1964 I was 11 yrs old and rode in the passenger seat of a black 1963 Impala SS 409 with 4:56 posi., headers, cutouts, mallory dual point distributior and hood scoop with dual air filters on the carbs. I've read setup like that they were close to 500hp.
With the street tires on it - uniroyal tiger paws it would do monster John Force style burnouts through 4th gear.
He ruined me for life! There is no going back. It was awesome!
I put a Hurst speed shifter into my 62 409 and it drastically improved my ability to hit all four gears at the track......if you havent tried one go for it, if you can find one anymore.....Andy
"She's so fine,my 409.." My late father talked about those cars and the motors they had back when they were brand new,409's,426 Hemi's,etc. He said that an Impala like yours (409 4spd dual quads) was the fastest car he had ever been in.I inherited his '67 Impala when he passed away.2dr fastback,Bolero red/red interior,283 w/ Rochester tripower, powerglide, posi.Truthfully,I would rather drive a classic car than a new one.Keepin' it old school.Thumbs up.
@krzone81 try and avoid reproduction parts if at all possible . What I used to was buy whole cars for the parts that I needed , then resell the donor car.
I remember my brother picking me up from school in Pomona,CA. with his red 63. 409 4 speed hurst. Red interior. White powder paint on the headers. I never see that anymore.) I wonder what ever happened to his car? This was 66 to about 69. I remember he was always fixing his 2 piece drive shaft in our garage. Banging that thing all night!...LOL
finally an impala wit a purpose. i love low riders and these are perfect for making them but if i had one it would be american muscle like this one. this bitch is a beast that can't be tamed. good job on this car bro keep it coming. when i get me some money im goin to buy a 64 and a 63 i know this one is a 63 but i would take da 64 turn it into a beast like this one and turn da 63 into a low rider but without hydraulics both would be weekend rollers and a 85 chevy c-10 for da week days
Wow, brings back memories, I had a 63 belair back in the late 80's. 396 with the pipes dumped under the rear doors. Quite a few of them were imported into Oz back in the day
hey u got yourself a keeper its unfortunate that motors arent made like that any more and how hard it is 2 find a 409. great motor and car. CHEVY ROCKS
The 409s were under-rated HP wise for insurance reasons.
Most of the 409s were rated (or advertised) as having from 340 HP to around 400 HP (with a few 425 HP versions avaliable) ...but in reality when an average factory 409 was Dyno-tested the HP was over 500 HP. (that's 500+ stock HP).
Is it just me, or does the timing sound slightly off?

Very nice, Sadly I'm doing a frame of restoration on my -64 Impala 4dr ht 409.
I want to drive it Now!
Have you done anything to the engine?
My streetracing friend optimized my heads and I've got 2 1/2" dual exhaust and those who know says it should give 15% extra to my 340hp.
A few more would be nice, but I don't wanna risk the engine.
bigblockimpala 4 years ago
thought the 409 had 409hp? hm.. or is that the dual Carb version..?
topflightss 4 years ago
409 hp was only -62, and with dual carbs.
(Beach boys sang about that engine).
-63 and -64 had 340hp, 400hp with single 4bbl and solid lifters and 425hp with dual 4bbl and solid lifters and special cam.
Thanks for asking
bigblockimpala 4 years ago
409/409hp is 62, 425 hp in 63-64
