I love how this video is designed and that every single frame (almost) is a brilliant photographic moment. Pedro Romahni did the clip as well as a few other Suede ones, and perfectly captured the song. The song's about rape obviously, and when Brett enters the council flat, I love how all of the walls are curtained and foreboding, creating a sense of shame and claustrophobia. It's as if from the outside, these flats all look identicle, but then some contain these dark secrets! Brilliant video.
I agree with gerri08....US really pays very little attention to alot of music from all other countries. I would have played these albums to death if i had been turned on to them when this came out. But I learned from an early age that if you want to discover alot of music you have to search hard to find them. --->Jane's Addiction, Iggy/Stooges the list goes on and on......... is just ridiculous. Yeah, British bands are sucking, except for the ones you never hear about. The same over here - there are some "yank" bands doing some pretty incredible stuff currently - get inspired: Mahjonng, Animal Collective/Panda Bear, Marnie Stern, St. Vincent, Surfer Blood to name a few. I think we are holding our own just fine.
Oink84: Ok, I am a "yank", although one seriously into British bands for sure - specifically 70's - 90's. But to say that that England was "always one step ahead of the yanks" is just totally uniformed I'm afraid. Punk actually started in NYC in the early 70's to start. Secondly, to actually ignore the importance of American bands such as: Suicide, Talking Heads, Television, Pixies, Pavement, Velvets, Richard Hell, Sonic Youth, Modern Lovers, -->
Okay, so in response to the most recent comments-the lead singer is not a girl. His name is Brett Anderson and he was dating Justine Frischmann (girl) the lead singer of Elastica around the time this was recorded. Yes, he's very effeminate and plays the Bowie androgyny thing beautifully, but he's definitely not a she.
Still one of my favorite music videos, it really sums up the blurry dirty escapist feelings that seemed prevalent in young people at the time. It's funny but I seem to detect that feeling coming back again. Maybe it's all related to the global economy! ;)

Oink and Sean - Bloody right there boys. The state of home grown bands now is shocking. This isn't an old fogey point of view. Simply fact. Listen to the radio today and weep.
England, what the hell happened with you? In the 90's you had music, today you have only pale reflections of music. Suede was fucking brilliant, unlike posers and twats that claim to be original today. Make more Andersons and Aschcrofts, and less Kaisers and Chiefs.
I just referred to the fact that in 70's, 80's and 90's England had the best bands, creative, dark and crazy, always one step ahead of Yanks (at least when it comes to rock music) and today it's all about retro haircuts and bands looking like an army of clones. I'm Croatian, by the way.

Sad indeed. The first time I saw the Smiths, I thought they were gravediggers. But the first time I actually listened to the Smiths, I realized they are fucking brilliant. Same thing goes for Suede, Brett looked like an androgenic fashion model at first, but when I listened to the "Suede" album it was like a knock-out, can't compare them with anything else. It's like there's no ideas left for the new bands, but I don't believe in that. They all just miss that something.

You can't really ask for more Andersons, they simply are or aren't there. Not that I would mind a whole series of them, though. Add in a couple of Jarvis Cockers too, lol.
@Oink84 I might be opening a can of worms, but... what do you think of The Libertines? And no, they're nowhere near the Cheryl Cole's or boybands. The same thing happened in America; much more great mainstream and underground music in the 90's with more innovation, and less talent around today (not no talent in either country, just less new talent.)
The problem with UK and US is that you keep importing immigrant savages from Africa, Mexico, Middle East, and Asia who naturally have different musical traditions. What the fuck do you expect, you fucking idiot?!
@whitekuduone dear friend...gotta agree with you..... At my humble home, we stick with what we know ,Morrissey, The Smiths, David Bowie , Suede, ..Nico, Jobriath, Candy Darling, *A*N*D*Y*, Vicious & Nancy, & Mick Ronson, John Bonham, & John Lennon....: we love you all & your all right here with us...forever.
After listening to their first album,I've come to the conclusion that Brett has the sexiest singing voice ever :) He just makes everything sound so much more sexy than anyone else would.
Love the intro to this, should have been a number 1, especially after the Brits performance. Trash and Stay Together were close to topping the charts too, though i never understood how Suede were never as big as Pulp or the Cranberries for example. Both bands never had a number one in the U.K. but were still more popular than Suede. I suppose the latter had a female singer, which usually helps. Surely Jarvis didn't create such a legacy all by himself. Jarvis is a great performer but so is Brett.
La primera vez que vi este video fue en el 93 en Suecia, un par de años despues lo vi aca en Chile,y sin saberlo mi hermano menor escuchaba esta banda, desde ahi los escucho son geniales.
Eddie may be the best guitarist ever, but Bernard Butler is so fucking fresh and original. He has some of the coolest licks of all time. I think he has more taste than Eddie does, even if he isnt as good technically.
Yeah...Eddie Van Halen, who is generally considered to be the best guitarist in the history of rock and roll. If you don't believe me, then ask Billy Gibons of ZZTop, who is one of the only guys who ever worked with both Hendrix and Van Halen, and he will tell you that Eddie is better. Seeing as how Hendrix said that Billy was going to be a great guitarist himself, it would make nore sense for Billy to say Hendrix was the best, but he sucked up his pride and called it like he saw it.
I'm really not interested in technical ability, so I wouldn't call him 'the best'. The best guitarist for me is Johnny Marr. Because he touches me with hat he plays.
I dont even really enjoy Eddies playing that much. Johnny Marr is fucking great. I like the guitarists that have deadly feel. Im not saying Eddie's the best...so everybody has to like him. I do think it's important for guitarists to have a benchmark, and beyond a doubt, Eddie is the standard for technical skill. Butler is so fucking great though. luv his playing in staytogether.
well, i'm not so sure. there is the line "in your council home/he broke all your bones" etc - so there is a possible interpretation that the subject of the song is repeating an abusive pattern based on an abusive father/son relationship.
They really could of been the Smiths of the 90's if Butler did not leave so soon. They both needed each other (musically) just as Morrissey and Marr did. Both have not been the same since they split. They are good, but not GREAT.
the way clips like this were shot in the 90s was so silly at times, reminds me of that john safran take-off where they strap a camera to a dog.I mean i love it, but I also think it's kind of ridiculous.
suede were really were so amazing and haunting here
I brought this as a casette singe at the time...and played on my walkman whilst on a flight to the USA....an amazing song...it killed all of the other bands at the time....what a group.....an amazing first album
I am straight but this is a quality song, the music changes the ambiance from serious to playful brilliantly, not very good with lyrics though so not really sure what they mean
its about this guy the lead singer was shagin, n he was an "animal"in the bed room! like really vilant, n so he was thought it was funny how people had to act so rediculuosly (dress in bondage gear etc) to get turned on!!
This is a gays song but i like it , not really gayist but i should be. Anyway i'm straight and i love you Pam. my gay friend known as big queen would like this.xxx next song charles and eddie would i lie to you
I will agree with that, early Suede were by far the best, Andersons's lyrics were great, as was the music. Later Suede lyrics were lacklustre and becoming repetetive.

Bernard Butler is indeed great too, great tone.
But yeah, opinions...

Butler is so fucking great though. luv his playing in staytogether.
clarkent69 2 years ago
Yeah, technically Eddie must be great, I agree. I'll check Stay Together right now.

Let me know how you like it! I cant believe hat song is not as popular as it should be. Talk about a rock classic.

It sounds great, and Butler's guitar indeed sounds fantastic.
Reint25 2 years ago 4
well, i'm not so sure. there is the line "in your council home/he broke all your bones" etc - so there is a possible interpretation that the subject of the song is repeating an abusive pattern based on an abusive father/son relationship.

it's about abusive gay sex, ass fucking, and amyl nitrate.

right except the word "abusive".....

They really could of been the Smiths of the 90's if Butler did not leave so soon. They both needed each other (musically) just as Morrissey and Marr did. Both have not been the same since they split. They are good, but not GREAT.
sirka067 2 years ago 4
well butler has been pretty succesful with duffy to be fair .
farman10122 2 years ago 5
You're so right....They could have been the next Smiths. I always thought they sounded very similar in an odd way.

the way clips like this were shot in the 90s was so silly at times, reminds me of that john safran take-off where they strap a camera to a dog.I mean i love it, but I also think it's kind of ridiculous.
suede were really were so amazing and haunting here

I am straight but this is a quality song, the music changes the ambiance from serious to playful brilliantly, not very good with lyrics though so not really sure what they mean

owencragg 2 years ago 2
its about this guy the lead singer was shagin, n he was an "animal"in the bed room! like really vilant, n so he was thought it was funny how people had to act so rediculuosly (dress in bondage gear etc) to get turned on!!

I don't think so my friend. Suede were at their best when at their darkest, as this and Dog Man Star will testify. This is simply a superb song!
musicalsimsy 2 years ago 4
I will agree with that, early Suede were by far the best, Andersons's lyrics were great, as was the music. Later Suede lyrics were lacklustre and becoming repetetive.
oakey47 2 years ago 5
Fantastic, Suede were definitely the best in the early 90's.
