  • Animal Lover > Animal Nitrate

  • While the generations before me had The Beatles, The Rolling Stones or The Doors, I had & still have Suede.

  • They're original.

  • I love how this video is designed and that every single frame (almost) is a brilliant photographic moment. Pedro Romahni did the clip as well as a few other Suede ones, and perfectly captured the song. The song's about rape obviously, and when Brett enters the council flat, I love how all of the walls are curtained and foreboding, creating a sense of shame and claustrophobia. It's as if from the outside, these flats all look identicle, but then some contain these dark secrets! Brilliant video.

  • britpop was rubbish. suede on the other hand were geniuses.

  • spank that pig, bitch!

  • Suede is one of the best british rockers of all time! Listen to Sci Fi Lullabies!

  • The video is fucked up but the music is awesome

  • holy shit, if this was americain, everyone would be calling it gay, hahaha, awesome song.

  • only the english can get away with this. we macho americans would has a fit.

  • cmon it sux ppl

  • Some many years later, this is still brilliant, like every song on the their first CD !

  • I am so jealous that I grew up in the 90s without this music.

  • I agree with gerri08....US really pays very little attention to alot of music from all other countries. I would have played these albums to death if i had been turned on to them when this came out. But I learned from an early age that if you want to discover alot of music you have to search hard to find them. Reading album reviews help too...I hope they plan on releasing a new album now that they are back together!

  • I lived in NYC all throught the 1990's and aside from maybe the errant video on " MTV 120 Minutes," I NEVER heard of this AMAZING group. How can this be? These songs would have greatly inspired me. Sad that the U.S. misses out on a LOT of UK brilliance.

  • "what does it take to turn you on?"

    and she answers

    "Damon Albarn"

  • @TomWyn123

    lol, nice

  • she is cute. nice voice.

  • @ablownboy lol, i know right? i'd totally bang that chick, brah.

  • --->Jane's Addiction, Iggy/Stooges the list goes on and on......... is just ridiculous. Yeah, British bands are sucking, except for the ones you never hear about. The same over here - there are some "yank" bands doing some pretty incredible stuff currently - get inspired: Mahjonng, Animal Collective/Panda Bear, Marnie Stern, St. Vincent, Surfer Blood to name a few. I think we are holding our own just fine.

  • Oink84: Ok, I am a "yank", although one seriously into British bands for sure - specifically 70's - 90's. But to say that that England was "always one step ahead of the yanks" is just totally uniformed I'm afraid. Punk actually started in NYC in the early 70's to start. Secondly, to actually ignore the importance of American bands such as: Suicide, Talking Heads, Television, Pixies, Pavement, Velvets, Richard Hell, Sonic Youth, Modern Lovers, -->

  • Is this the UK or the USA version of the video?

  • LOVE THIS SONG!!!

  • Okay, so in response to the most recent comments-the lead singer is not a girl. His name is Brett Anderson and he was dating Justine Frischmann (girl) the lead singer of Elastica around the time this was recorded. Yes, he's very effeminate and plays the Bowie androgyny thing beautifully, but he's definitely not a she.

  • She has such a powerful, soulful voice.

  • What does it take to turn me on? hmm...Probably Brettt and his voice XD

  • u know what is really unique about this band? The awesome and Highly Sexy vocal especially for a girl...

  • Should have gone with a sexier t-girl, but the band is still mighty sexy.

  • awsome!!!:D

  • buenísimo recuerdo!

  • seedy. androgynous. beautiful.

  • jeez for a bit suede hAD THE WORLD BUT THEN BLUR AND OASIS TOOK IT FROM THEM. OH WELL, WHATEVER, NEVERMIND

  • I have always thought Brett looked scrumptious in this video :D

  • one of their best

have to say I adore that accent, the way he pronounces the word "take", sweeeeeet.

  • Absolutely!

  • Still one of my favorite music videos, it really sums up the blurry dirty escapist feelings that seemed prevalent in young people at the time. It's funny but I seem to detect that feeling coming back again. Maybe it's all related to the global economy! ;)

  • Always loved the intro to this song. The way the guitar and then guitar / drums kick in. Cue Brett.

    Brilliant.

  • how do i get in touch with the fleshy lady in this video?

  • so SOOOOO lovely song. I missed that amazing band.

  • wonder what Brett is up to these days. Miss Suede so much.

  • checks his solo stuff out on the tube... he's had three solo albums out...most recently slow attack...marvellous!

  • @betogomez Hes solo now , im going to see him play in Glasgow tomorrow! :D

  • Brett is doing solo stuff. Suede are doing a one off reunion gig (with Coming Up line-up) on March 24th in London for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

  • Oink and Sean - Bloody right there boys. The state of home grown bands now is shocking. This isn't an old fogey point of view. Simply fact. Listen to the radio today and weep.

  • Great clip, music and lyrics.

Sexy and provocative like all the rock'n'roll should be

  • this is amaziiing soong :)

  • England, what the hell happened with you? In the 90's you had music, today you have only pale reflections of music. Suede was fucking brilliant, unlike posers and twats that claim to be original today. Make more Andersons and Aschcrofts, and less Kaisers and Chiefs.

  • ure totally right there mate

  • at least say where your from when you make a comment like that! for all we know your a yank which would make your view comical!

  • I just referred to the fact that in 70's, 80's and 90's England had the best bands, creative, dark and crazy, always one step ahead of Yanks (at least when it comes to rock music) and today it's all about retro haircuts and bands looking like an army of clones. I'm Croatian, by the way.

  • @Oink84 you are so right buddie.. im from the u.k btw .. bands now are so crap regugitating same stuff.. kaisers are just shouters.. we used to have great bands like suede and the smiths etc.. now look what there is......... very sad

  • Sad indeed. The first time I saw the Smiths, I thought they were gravediggers. But the first time I actually listened to the Smiths, I realized they are fucking brilliant. Same thing goes for Suede, Brett looked like an androgenic fashion model at first, but when I listened to the "Suede" album it was like a knock-out, can't compare them with anything else. It's like there's no ideas left for the new bands, but I don't believe in that. They all just miss that something.

  • "ANDROGYNOUS" i think you mean...

'androgenic' means any substance that promotes masculinity ie testosterone etc, which obviously wouldnt be the case. (sorry to be pedantic)

  • Comment removed

  • You are right, I was referring to his somewhat feminine appearance.

  • I'd say the scene depends on how many talented AND charismatic bands are out there making music, maybe this is just a dry period, which allows the industry to flood the charts with dispensable stuff? You can't really ask for more Andersons, they simply are or aren't there. Not that I would mind a whole series of them, though. Add in a couple of Jarvis Cockers too, lol.

  • @Oink84 I might be opening a can of worms, but... what do you think of The Libertines? And no, they're nowhere near the Cheryl Cole's or boybands. The same thing happened in America; much more great mainstream and underground music in the 90's with more innovation, and less talent around today (not no talent in either country, just less new talent.)

  • @Oink84

The problem with UK and US is that you keep importing immigrant savages from Africa, Mexico, Middle East, and Asia who naturally have different musical traditions. What the fuck do you expect, you fucking idiot?!

  • @whitekuduone dear friend...gotta agree with you..... At my humble home, we stick with what we know ,Morrissey, The Smiths, David Bowie , Suede, ..Nico, Jobriath, Candy Darling, *A*N*D*Y*, Vicious & Nancy, & Mick Ronson, John Bonham, & John Lennon....: we love you all & your all right here with us...forever.

  • This is a fucking anthem. One of the best british bands of the 90's

  • Just amazing..

  • los amo...!!!1 es genial

  • I love it!

  • placebo are a load of shite they should be called gaybo

  • @manfat2 they should call them gaybo's or bender badges...

Why are you using gay as an insult btw? U realise this song is about being gay right?

  • @stinkymonkey60 amyl nitrate, the phrase 'and now he has come'

and you think I'm wrong? lolololol!

  • Britpop rocks!

  • After listening to their first album,I've come to the conclusion that Brett has the sexiest singing voice ever :) He just makes everything sound so much more sexy than anyone else would.

  • OMG! He's so beautiful.

  • A revival awaits

  • i hope your right mr christgau

  • @returnofdanbrown08 i was right lol, well one off gig counts doesn't it

  • haha yeah, good call, i didnt realise it was actually you, i always rely on your reviews man

  • great song, great guitar playing!!!

  • opening riff is amazing. great track

  • THIS is what it takes to turn me on ;p

  • Suede and the Manics are probably the best of the 90's....damn these London boys are HOT!!

  • Couldn't agree more, love both of them. esp Suede. x

  • Damn I agree! Manics n' Suede both are the best bands of the 90's! Along with Placebo!

  • Darn right!

  • how about nirvana? -.-

  • That goes without saying. I'll have to mention all the other great grunge bands

  • Simply unsurpassable.

    Best band of the 90s

  • oh god he makes me come <3

  • ... I must agree

  • :) yeah you are the man:)

  • Love the intro to this, should have been a number 1, especially after the Brits performance. Trash and Stay Together were close to topping the charts too, though i never understood how Suede were never as big as Pulp or the Cranberries for example. Both bands never had a number one in the U.K. but were still more popular than Suede. I suppose the latter had a female singer, which usually helps. Surely Jarvis didn't create such a legacy all by himself. Jarvis is a great performer but so is Brett.

  • Brett cracks me up EVERY time I see him perform!!! :-D

  • oh sorry lol

  • Ahhh...britpop at its best!

  • Seriously can't believe this is 16 years old!! Boys who look like girls indeed.

  • they look older than 16 if your talking about suede

  • john and edward? yerh thanks. :@

  • top pop is top

  • lead singer looks like edward furlong, terminator 2 kid

  • this is soooooo not john and edward haha

  • I've doing a research.

So far have sent this video to 4 different girls.

    Results are:

2 - the video and brett are sexy

    2 - tottaly not sexy :)

I personally think it's so damn sexy, even though I am not gay ...

  • youre teh gay one

  • grow up, this is great music, oh you have no idea

  • this is rock men .... what are you talking about ... is ambiguo but is good ....

  • no they couldnt! i mean i love suede but there no where are good as the smiths.

  • Eddie may be the best guitarist ever, but Bernard Butler is so fucking fresh and original. He has some of the coolest licks of all time. I think he has more taste than Eddie does, even if he isnt as good technically.

  • whos eddie?

  • I guess he means Eddie van Halen... Who really doesn't have anything to offer.

  • Which Eddie do you mean?

  • Yeah...Eddie Van Halen, who is generally considered to be the best guitarist in the history of rock and roll. If you don't believe me, then ask Billy Gibons of ZZTop, who is one of the only guys who ever worked with both Hendrix and Van Halen, and he will tell you that Eddie is better. Seeing as how Hendrix said that Billy was going to be a great guitarist himself, it would make nore sense for Billy to say Hendrix was the best, but he sucked up his pride and called it like he saw it.

  • I'm really not interested in technical ability, so I wouldn't call him 'the best'. The best guitarist for me is Johnny Marr. Because he touches me with hat he plays.

Bernard Butler is indeed great too, great tone.

    But yeah, opinions...

  • I dont even really enjoy Eddies playing that much. Johnny Marr is fucking great. I like the guitarists that have deadly feel. Im not saying Eddie's the best...so everybody has to like him. I do think it's important for guitarists to have a benchmark, and beyond a doubt, Eddie is the standard for technical skill. Butler is so fucking great though. luv his playing in staytogether.

  • Yeah, technically Eddie must be great, I agree. I'll check Stay Together right now.

  • Let me know how you like it! I cant believe hat song is not as popular as it should be. Talk about a rock classic.

  • It sounds great, and Butler's guitar indeed sounds fantastic.

  • well, i'm not so sure. there is the line "in your council home/he broke all your bones" etc - so there is a possible interpretation that the subject of the song is repeating an abusive pattern based on an abusive father/son relationship.

  • it's about abusive gay sex, ass fucking, and amyl nitrate.

  • right except the word "abusive".....

  • They really could of been the Smiths of the 90's if Butler did not leave so soon. They both needed each other (musically) just as Morrissey and Marr did. Both have not been the same since they split. They are good, but not GREAT.

  • well butler has been pretty succesful with duffy to be fair .

  • You're so right....They could have been the next Smiths. I always thought they sounded very similar in an odd way.

  • Why they just cant be Suede of the 90s ???

    ;SS

  • Thank you.

  • you re right the best suede was whit Bernard Butler

  • i dunno i like radiohead

  • Cause your a fucking moron.

  • If I were a guy, pretty sure I wouldn't turn down any of Brett's advances! lol

  • Between the guitar, vocals, video—all around classic!

  • this is freakin' cool

  • smiths of the 90s man, it got to be cool otherwise what is it?

  • the way clips like this were shot in the 90s was so silly at times, reminds me of that john safran take-off where they strap a camera to a dog.I mean i love it, but I also think it's kind of ridiculous.

suede were really were so amazing and haunting here

  • I brought this as a casette singe at the time...and played on my walkman whilst on a flight to the USA....an amazing song...it killed all of the other bands at the time....what a group.....an amazing first album

  • reminds me of the shins

  • I am straight but this is a quality song, the music changes the ambiance from serious to playful brilliantly, not very good with lyrics though so not really sure what they mean

  • its about gay orgies on amyl nitrate, i'm not kidding or trying to be offensive it really is

  • its about this guy the lead singer was shagin, n he was an "animal"in the bed room! like really vilant, n so he was thought it was funny how people had to act so rediculuosly (dress in bondage gear etc) to get turned on!!

  • The lead singer never shaged a guy.

  • This is a gays song but i like it , not really gayist but i should be. Anyway i'm straight and i love you Pam. my gay friend known as big queen would like this.xxx next song charles and eddie would i lie to you

  • Well Brett wasn't / isn't gay either if that helps. He was just fascinated by the subculture. : )

  • questa canzone spacca!!! grandi Suede

  • if this doesnt get you dancing and shaking your dick somethings wrong in your life

  • lol! :D If I had a dick I would shake it.

  • I don't think so my friend. Suede were at their best when at their darkest, as this and Dog Man Star will testify. This is simply a superb song!

  • I will agree with that, early Suede were by far the best, Andersons's lyrics were great, as was the music. Later Suede lyrics were lacklustre and becoming repetetive.

  • Fantastic, Suede were definitely the best in the early 90's.

  • Love this song! Love Suede!
