@ShinerCCC That sound was made by hitting the Fly Guy. The more subtle spike sound was overwhelmed by the louder sound of Marth's non-tipper hit. You can also tell it was the spike hit (other than the angle) by the damage it did; 13%.
These people look like amateurs to me... They move so slowly and don't seem to be doing very many moves lol. No match up to my peach or climbers. They need to make it so you can play melee online. Brawl is just an inferior game. Plain and simple.
@ssbrosking36 Totally disagreed. It's not inferior unless you're a combo-elitist who scoffs at any fighter that doesn't follow the oh-so-precious tradition that normal fighters set down.
Both Melee and Brawl are awesome games BECAUSE they break from tradition.
@smashbrolink I mean... those who take Melee serious, and are good at it much prefer it over Brawl. Probably even 100 to 1. On a survey more would choose melee. This is due to melee being the more challenging game. This may be my opinion, however, melee is definitely more technical.
P.S. Melee is all about spacing. The wave dashing, L-Cancel, teching landings, short hop.... All is crucial if you want to win.
@ssbrosking36 See, now that makes more sense, and I can agree with most of that.
Brawl was so drastically different from Melee that it's obvious most would want to stick with what they're familiar with, and I don't really blame them for that.
But as to it being more challenging?
That's debatable.....
I mean, sure, it took a while to master the techs, but once you did?
Upwards of 50% in one near-inescapable combo, for most of the high tiers.
Brawl don't got it that easy for most characters sadly.
@smashbrolink Personally, I don't care for Brawl for three main reasons. 1. The Physics feels off. Things don't flow or look quite as natural. 2. I hate how you can trip in Brawl. The creators said that was put into the game to reduce competition. 3. IT IS FAR TOO EASY TO RETURN OFF THE MAP. You can grab the edge from 3 feet away. lol. You just have to get people to way higher percentages. Making the game more about defense than offense.
@smashbrolink Actually, while melee does favor the agressor, most combo's are escapable somehow. Its not as simple as just get a hit off and you can't combo a stock away because of the way melee's di's work. In order to have a successful combo You have to predict your opponents di's as well as spot dodges and ect. And while melee does require more tech skill that doesn't mean it's by any means less mental. In fact i'd say the technical features make it more because more options = more predicting
@untouchedking That makes sense on paper, but take a look at the many, many video examples of all of the things you said not happening despite these factors.
As long as you had the finger speed and a character fast enough to compliment it in Melee, a bit of prediction[which comes easily from someone adept at studying opponents] will almost assuredly grant the aggressor with the faster character and the most tech practice an overwhelming advantage due to fewer escape options for the victim.
@smashbrolink It's not just good on paper, it's good in practice too. I can comment on the way both games play competatively because I've played BOTH competatively. Besides that there's an element to melee called spacing and priority. For example Peach isn't nearly as fast as fox, but peach has way more survivablity and Priority. If a fox doesn't predict peach's movements (such as a wavedash back) and just Shuffl's recklessly into combat, a peach can outspace and punish heavily.
@untouchedking These elements combined make the matchup fairly even. In addition to that there are other elements to factor in besides speed and combo capability. For example Falco and Jigglypuff are also tied with fox for Top tier and its because falco has projectiles while jiggs has better spacing/recovery/edgegaurding options compared to fox. Im not asking you to drop brawl and play melee I just don't think its fair that you would say that melee players only play it because its more familiar.
@untouchedking True, but once he can get in close, teching alongside hit-stun can guarantee a nice string combo that Peach is not likely to escape from. I've seen a few combos where DI slightly changed trajectory and allowed survival, but the string still played out for decent damage.
@smashbrolink Escape definitely easy, but theres something you need to realize about melee. There's always a way, it's just really hard sometimes. Like for instance, fox's drillshine to upsmash combo on peach. If a peach di's downward or away from fox during the shine he can't upsmash her unless he predicts that (very unlikely) while she can counter with a downsmash. The thing about this is, a shine has the lowest amount of hitlag in the game giving only 4 frames to smash di Which makes it hard
@untouchedking sorry i meant escape is hard. And If you don't know 4 frames is about 1/15th of a second, and as hard as that sounds its definitely possible, if the peach expects it she can ready her di so when it hits its not that hard.
@untouchedking There's a difference between hard but doable, and next-to-impossible.
Melee falls under the latter. If it did not, then many of the combos people say are totally escapable wouldn't even be happening. And on top of that, with limited options in terms of WHERE a victim can DI to in order to escape, a pro doesn't have to think very hard to predict what paths they could take and plan appropriate counter-measures, be they escaping or countering.
@smashbrolink Saying it's impossible is a ridiculous statement. There are numerous times where i've been able to react quick enough to di something really well and am able to get out of combos and/or survive. You'll see it alot in high level play as well where players are known to di really well or do amazing things in order to have longevity. Maybe it is next to impossible, but thats the great part. That there are next to impossible feats that can be achieved with a purpose.
@smashbrolink That's one of the aspects that makes melee fun. It's a challenging game and there's no end to the feats which can be achieved. In addition to that the way you say it suggests that every character has some sort of 0 to death combo. Even chaingrabs are escapable via mindgames ect. Above that while escaping a combo is challenging, actually doing the combo itself can be just as challenging. Which is why you'll see even pro's often fail at escaping and comboing.
@smashbrolink Listen man, I don't expect you to say that i'm right and come crawling to play melee. But I hate how brawl players have the idea of melee that every time you get a hit off its instant easy combo and everytime another character is offstage its instant death. Comboing in itself is actually very challenging. It requires a certain amount of tech skill sure, but above that it requires even more knowledge about the metagame as well as the other player, which is what makes melee amazing.
@untouchedking I never meant to imply that it was easy to learn these things. What I was trying to get at is that hit-stun is basically holding your hand throughout the process once you >have< learned them.
Lemme put this in another way that may get my point across better;
Try to imagine Melee's mechanics, with normal Brawl's hit-stun computations.
Now imagine trying to make 3/4ths of your combos land successfully without the opponent dodging or escaping.
@smashbrolink By no means am i saying that getting out of combo's is easier than executing them, but at the same time melee's hitstun and air dodge system creates something that brawl doesn't have. Momentum. saying that melee's hitstun is helping you in the process would be the same as me saying Brawls LACK OF HITSTUN is helping you when you get hit. Brawl is like playing tag, and thats what melee players dont like about it. It's either hit and then get hit, or hit and then retreat to a ledge.
@smashbrolink And don't try and deny that brawl plays like that, I went to a melee tourney where brawl was also being held and watched the matches. It was very campy-stall based gameplay. And when it wasnt campy it was them hitting eachother with no sort of momentum.
@untouchedking Then the players at the tournament you went to either weren't very good at Brawl or played Melee more often.
I'm part of a community of top Brawl players[though I, myself, am far from being a true expert at my chosen character], and I can tell you through battle experience that a match against a really good Brawl player isn't going to be a no-momentum tag match.
Sure, it will be less than Melee, due to the speed, but it's not going to be as bad as u make it sound.

I hate 1v2s though.
Played a 20 stock match on Eldin Bridge, Kirby(me) and Bowser vs. Link and Pit. My teammate had little experience, and the other 2 had pretty good experience with the game. My teammate left when he had 14 stock. We killed him off, the battle resumed until Link had 2 Lifes and Pit had 3. I died. But I still saw that as a victory!
Falco short hop laser is pretty easy. You just have to short hot, tap B once, then fast fall as soon as you reach the peak of the short hop. Once you get good at doing it just straight up and down, you can start doing it while moving horizontally. It's super useful and cool once you get good at it.
That's very true, that would be one of many great examples! But for my 2009 chronicles I'm just using stuff I've filmed since April 09 hehe. Nice to see you again! And I would encourage anyone to check out the video he's talking about: WrGyJU3YsGU starting around 2:50

@ssbrosking36 The first one is the big reason why most don't like it, so I understand that one.
The second, well.....I guess it depends on the person, but I've been SAVED by trips more often than killed by them, sooo.....XD
And the last one? Well, that's really character, and map, specific, but with characters like Pit on FD, I can see your point.
