I just wanted to see the race, and I was really disappointed when it didn't happen.
I love them both and I am happy that both are now enjoying a happy retirement. :)
Besides, putting down each other won't help you. We will never know for sure how it could have turned out, so why do we need to have the same childish arguement? "Rachel would dust Zenyatta. my opinon of why RA didn't run was because jess jackson didn't want curlin losing his spot as the all time american money earner. if zenyatta beat RA in this race then she would have eventually surpassed curlin on the list.

You cannot compare these two mares! they are both amazing and none is better then the other in my opinion. Both Rachel Alexandra AND Zenyatta have Pros and Cons about them.
The $5 million dollar farce that never was!! LOL. I don't like to speak ill of the dead. But this race never happened because Jess Jackson knew that Zenyatta would've blown by Rachael Alexandra through the stretch faster than hurricane Katrina blew through New Orleans!!! JMO.
@GBeret83 - At 1 1/8M Rachel wins even going 22 change, 46 change. Just like she did in the Haskell, and Woodward. I would Take Rachel's 3 yr old campaign and would gladly put that up against Zenyatta's 2009 Season. Now because of Zenyatta's connections slow pace stance on her early racing, she was a force at 4yrs old. Her classic win to me should have been the BC Turf Race. Non the less she won, and with pure conviction. I really believed that she could have been a great Turf Mare.
@GBeret83 I agree Zenyatta would have spanked RA and Jackson knew it so he backed out of the race instead of getting embarrassed. Rachel couldn't even beat Zenyatta's stablemate Zardana which Zenyatta defeated while giving Zardana 11 lbs while Rachel was only giving 2lbs to zardana and still lost.

Landaluce is still my favorite horse of all time. I went and saw her race at Del Mar when I was very young. She won with ease, it's to bad Landaluce was in the hands of a butcher who is all about winning and not caring about the horses. Not even Rufffian did what Landaluce did as a 2yr old.
@isitingood69 but ruffian was the better horse she raced and won with a popped splint and raced and won with a fracture in her back leg.. and that was as a 2 yr old and as a 3 year old when her sesamoids broke she still tried to race thats why jacinto had such a hard time pulling her up she evn tried on 3 legs.... and in some races b4 ruffian could get into the lead the other jockeys boxed her with thier horses in her 2 yro races and 3yro races..

Whiteley would not run a horse in that condition and the track vet also Because they would both lose there licences. No horses tried to box Ruffian in because she was always on or near the lead so there was no chance of anyone boxing her in. Landaluce's 1.08 flat still stands today for a 2 yr old.

and she partially fractured her back leg in the spinaway... and yes it did really happen.... the only way whiteley found out was because she left food in her bowl because she was walking fine, when he had her wlaked out she had a weird step.. so he took her to a vet and they found the fracture

Alright. Lets all just be serious here. Who made H&R as one of the top 50 horses, in the same section as Secretariat? Who went 19 for 20? And lost her last race by a NOSE against another one of the best horses? Zenyatta. Rachel Alexandra is an amazing horse too. But, owners and trainers know the most about the horse, and they knew she was gonna lose to Zenyatta. Goes to show who's the better horse.

A lot of horses aren't as versatile as those Champs. Should we disgrace them for it? No! Its great if they canrun on Dirt,or Synthetic.Its even greater if they can run on both. But it wouldn't mean they are bad horses if they didn't.

She simply proved that she could bury all the GREAT Dirt horses in the world, and lose to blame(who raced wonderfully buy Garret Gomez) but ONLY because of her trip. If she had half a that trip cleaner, or was closer up to the pace, and not 20+ lengths, she beats Blame by 5. But this is all history.
Goldikova ran against males on turf not dirt! It's a lot easier for a filly to beat males on turf then dirt, go look at the the records. You idiot's who say she was pampered don't have a clue! Zenyatta could have run in the BC distaff last year and Zenyatta could have taken the easy road and run in the distaff this year for an easy 20th straight win. She ran in the biggest race on Breeders cup day so that is not being pampered.

Don't get started on that Bull Sh**. She had one great year due to her terrible mismanagement in her 4 yo. year. It was Hal Wiggin's conditioning that gave her enough Star power to last 8 races. NOT Asmussen. That one great year was more impressive than any of Zenyatta's single years. Put them together, yeah. But being raced 5 times a year to allowance fillies, and only coming out once a year to face the real competition is not HOTY material.

Rachel Alexandra never ducked the Apple Blossom, her cowardly owners did. They where to afraid to test what they made. A confused, unhappy yet very talented filly. Unable to stretch her wings because she was in terrible management. Had she been in Wiggin's hands to this day, she would still be racing. And she would still be winning. W could never know what Rachel would do if she was in the right hands. So why don't you turn your attention to something you know a bit more about.

You totally ignored my post. Practically her whole 2010 season was a like a chinese fire drill. Confusing, and uneventful. Trying to teach a natural front-runner to rate, will only make the horse learn to run slower. Thats exactly what Asmussen tried to do for some reason. And RA is such a strong front-runner, she spits the bit when Calvin tries to rate her. And I knew the race was on Dirt. Zenyatta is probably better on dirt than plastic.

Bcause she got in a speed duel with Life At Ten. I saw Rachel's heart more than anything in that race. Life At Ten was the one who faded badly, not Rachel Alexandra. She fought on with Persistently, and lost only by a flank. Life At Ten finished far back from Persistently and Rachel Alexandra.

Your just a lowlife fag who targets a horse for not being perfect. Zenyatta isn't perfect, neither is Rachel. None of them are. They try their hardest in ech of their races. Rachel Alexandra was terribly managed, and only taught how to run slower in her races. Yet she still showed hints of her former self throughout th year, It is really hard for a racehorse to perform that well under such management. Either go crawl back in a hole, or grow a heart.

For 100 loving, and caring owners and trainers, there is atleast 1 bad seed. Like Todd Pletcher perhaps, or Rick Dutrow. But look beyond the people who make Horse Racing so stereotypical, look at the Mosses they love their horses deeply. And John Shirrefs is a wonderful trainer, so kind and caring. Steve Asmussen took an extremely talented filly, ran her to the ground last year. After the Woodward any normal person could tell Rachel was not a happy horse.

I will agree with you Lukas was a terrible trainer, look at Landaluce. She was a brilliant filly, one of the all time greats. But he to ran such a young horse to the ground, and it proved fatal. Besides I was just giving an example. Many local trainers are much kinder and gentler. I even know a retired trainer, he adores his horses.
@queenluciaa I got to see both at the Preakness and Breeders' Cup Classic. I agree with you completely. Team Zenyatta looks in the best interest of the horse and we got to watch her for a few years. Jess Jackson and Rachel's trainer ran her into the ground just for the short term fame and money. It would have been incredible to have two Horse of the Year awards for 2009. Rachel's breeder and original owner was right to keep the fillies with fillies, Zenyatta met the boys and won the one.

This RA vs Z debate should have never happened. How could it be called a rivalry if they never met? Shirreffs was correct. We should have celebrated BOTH horses. We had a filly dominating in the East and a big mare undefeated from the West. Instead, we pitted them one vs one. Destroyed the enjoyment out of them both where everybody became a party pooper and we were forced to choose sides.

For me, it breaks down along these lines. What Rachel Alexandra accomplished in 2009 was basically unheard of for a 3yr.old filly to accomplish. No doubt, she had a remarkable 2009 season. But that's now her legacy. Just that 2009 season. A "one year wonder" if your will. Zenyatta is going to be remembered for a career. Not just one year. Because no one was able to beat her during any season. And the competition has only one more shot to accomplish that feat. IMO, very doubtful they will.
Now RA apologists will use the hypothetical and assume RA would have beaten Zen because of the slow time. Yet, Rachel runs slower than Blind Luck and Afleet Express going 10F in a pedestrian 28 sec final quarter. It's over. Rachel fans all got PWNED in 2010. RA's 2009 is now a "mirage" and 2010 is the year when it spoke the truth about her. And Zen never had to face her to expose her. Earlier retirement = raise the white flag. Debate between Z vs RA is over.
GBeret, I feel the same way. I really don't have anything against Rachel herself, but grew tired of Jess mouthing off about how he wanted a three-race series between these two horses last year when he assumed Zen was retired. This 2010 season will always be remembered how the "true" Queen revealed herself and not some younger imposter to the throne who retired already. Ultimate crow eating year to all RAbids who laughed at Zen last year.
@Kulaness, If she wasn't ducking Zenyatta? Then why would Rachel's connections have pulled her out of a race on Rachel's preferred surface? The conventional dirt at Oaklawn. At Rachel's preferred distance, 1-1/8th? With a $5 million dollar payday involved? That's as much as the Breeders Cup Classic pays. Not dodging Zenyatta my ass. LOL.
The only time this race would've ever been remotely competitive between Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra was in 2009. When Rachel was in the kind of form she was in when winning the 09' Preakness, Haskell, and Woodward. That said, even with Rachel in that kind of form, I still believe Zenyatta would've ran her down. She's just too good. She refuses to quit accelerating until she's passed every horse that lay in her path. In 2010, this race would've been a joke. Given how poorly Rachel raced. JMO.

Zenyatta beat BOTH Summer Bird and Colonel John who were Both the TOP horses in the BC Classic so there is NO saying that Zenyatta has NOT run against anyone Good! Zenyatta also beat Richards Kid and Gio Point in the BC Classic which were ALSO two more TOP horses in 2009.
The only horse left in the 2009/2010 competition is Rachel Alexander, so I hope Rachel Alexander and Zenyatta will have at least 2 or 3 meets TOGETHER befor e their respectice racing carrears are over.
see i dont like match races the reason why is Ruffian, all a match race is is taking 2 horses and just flat out running them as fast as they can possibly go, and its pretty much the one who is less afraid of the pain because it will hurt, thats when its all about heart. they are exciting but theres always that maybe about a breakdown and it would be better not to risk it. so why dont they just put them both into a stakes race instead of a match

@SugarTomAppleRoger but since zenyatta is a closer she would only have that advantage if the pace was fast, and since it's only those two Rachel, as you said, would take it easy hence a not so fast pace, and that might be a disadvantage to zen.

I don't blame Rachel's connections for ducking out of that race at Oaklawn, even w/ the $5 million purse and public pressure for a showdown. Also, I don't blame Zen's connections for being ultra-conservative w/ their mare; if they want to stay home until the Breeder's Cup that's fine w/ me. Unfortunately, today's race horses are delicate and injury-prone thanks to short-sighted breeding practices that favor speed and precocity over stamina. Why risk injury or a breakdown--remember Ruffian?
@dubby300 I think a lot of East Coast sportswriters and horse racing analysts were saying Zenyatta lacked the Beyer speed figs to compete w/ that field. Also, females (i.e. fillies and mares) have historically demonstrated they are at a competitive disadvantage vs. males. No female had won the BCC up until Zenyatta. And Zen went off at 5/2, paying 7.60 to win (closer to 3-1). If you recall, the second selection was 3-1. If you look at the tote board you can see there was no heavy favs.

I would Take Rachel's 3 yr old campaign and would gladly put that up against Zenyatta's 2009 Season. Now because of Zenyatta's connections slow pace stance on her early racing, she was a force at 4yrs old. Her classic win to me should have been the BC Turf Race. Non the less she won, and with pure conviction. I really believed that she could have been a great Turf Mare.

Landaluce is still my favorite horse of all time. I went and saw her race at Del Mar when I was very young. She won with ease, it's to bad Landaluce was in the hands of a butcher who is all about winning and not caring about the horses. Not even Rufffian did what Landaluce did as a 2yr old.

@isitingood69 but ruffian was the better horse she raced and won with a popped splint and raced and won with a fracture in her back leg.. and that was as a 2 yr old and as a 3 year old when her sesamoids broke she still tried to race thats why jacinto had such a hard time pulling her up she evn tried on 3 legs.... and in some races b4 ruffian could get into the lead the other jockeys boxed her with thier horses in her 2 yro races and 3yro races..

Whiteley would not run a horse in that condition and the track vet also Because they would both lose there licences. No horses tried to box Ruffian in because she was always on or near the lead so there was no chance of anyone boxing her in. Landaluce's 1.08 flat still stands today for a 2 yr old.

You can make the excuse nobody wanted to run against her because of the synthetic surface but the Apple Blossom is run on dirt which Zenyatta won twice and horses still ducked her including Rachel.

Also Colonel John proved that wrong as everyone thought he could only win on synthetics but he won theTravers and Ravolo runs the exact same on both surfaces. a lot of horses that run good at Santa Anita don't run good a Del Mar when both were synthetics. .

@jackgingeranderic - Zenyatta lost because of the trip she had. NOT because Blame, or ANY of those horses had more talent. Blame lost to Haynesfield...BADLY, so what makes blame so great?. She simply proved that she could bury all the GREAT Dirt horses in the world, and lose to blame(who raced wonderfully buy Garret Gomez) but ONLY because of her trip. If she had half a that trip cleaner, or was closer up to the pace, and not 20+ lengths, she beats Blame by 5. But this is all history.

Goldikova ran against males on turf not dirt! It's a lot easier for a filly to beat males on turf then dirt, go look at the the records. You idiot's who say she was pampered don't have a clue! Zenyatta could have run in the BC distaff last year and Zenyatta could have taken the easy road and run in the distaff this year for an easy 20th straight win. She ran in the biggest race on Breeders cup day so that is not being pampered.

Don't get started on that Bull Sh**. She had one great year due to her terrible mismanagement in her 4 yo. year. It was Hal Wiggin's conditioning that gave her enough Star power to last 8 races. NOT Asmussen. That one great year was more impressive than any of Zenyatta's single years. Put them together, yeah. But being raced 5 times a year to allowance fillies, and only coming out once a year to face the real competition is not HOTY material.

Rachel Alexandra never ducked the Apple Blossom, her cowardly owners did. They where to afraid to test what they made. A confused, unhappy yet very talented filly. Unable to stretch her wings because she was in terrible management. Had she been in Wiggin's hands to this day, she would still be racing. And she would still be winning. W could never know what Rachel would do if she was in the right hands. So why don't you turn your attention to something you know a bit more about.

You totally ignored my post. Practically her whole 2010 season was a like a chinese fire drill. Confusing, and uneventful. Trying to teach a natural front-runner to rate, will only make the horse learn to run slower. Thats exactly what Asmussen tried to do for some reason. And RA is such a strong front-runner, she spits the bit when Calvin tries to rate her. And I knew the race was on Dirt. Zenyatta is probably better on dirt than plastic.

Bcause she got in a speed duel with Life At Ten. I saw Rachel's heart more than anything in that race. Life At Ten was the one who faded badly, not Rachel Alexandra. She fought on with Persistently, and lost only by a flank. Life At Ten finished far back from Persistently and Rachel Alexandra.

Your just a lowlife fag who targets a horse for not being perfect. Zenyatta isn't perfect, neither is Rachel. None of them are. They try their hardest in ech of their races. Rachel Alexandra was terribly managed, and only taught how to run slower in her races. Yet she still showed hints of her former self throughout th year, It is really hard for a racehorse to perform that well under such management. Either go crawl back in a hole, or grow a heart.

For 100 loving, and caring owners and trainers, there is atleast 1 bad seed. Like Todd Pletcher perhaps, or Rick Dutrow. But look beyond the people who make Horse Racing so stereotypical, look at the Mosses they love their horses deeply. And John Shirrefs is a wonderful trainer, so kind and caring. Steve Asmussen took an extremely talented filly, ran her to the ground last year. After the Woodward any normal person could tell Rachel was not a happy horse.

I will agree with you Lukas was a terrible trainer, look at Landaluce. She was a brilliant filly, one of the all time greats. But he to ran such a young horse to the ground, and it proved fatal. Besides I was just giving an example. Many local trainers are much kinder and gentler. I even know a retired trainer, he adores his horses.

@queenluciaa I got to see both at the Preakness and Breeders' Cup Classic. I agree with you completely. Team Zenyatta looks in the best interest of the horse and we got to watch her for a few years. Jess Jackson and Rachel's trainer ran her into the ground just for the short term fame and money. It would have been incredible to have two Horse of the Year awards for 2009. Rachel's breeder and original owner was right to keep the fillies with fillies, Zenyatta met the boys and won the one.

Because I didn't like the connection's that got hold of her after Hal Wiggin's had her. But I always thought, and still do till this day, that Zenyatta was the better filly/mare, and would've beaten Rachel Alexandra on any surface, at any distance. TJMO.

This RA vs Z debate should have never happened. How could it be called a rivalry if they never met? Shirreffs was correct. We should have celebrated BOTH horses. We had a filly dominating in the East and a big mare undefeated from the West. Instead, we pitted them one vs one. Destroyed the enjoyment out of them both where everybody became a party pooper and we were forced to choose sides.

For me, it breaks down along these lines. What Rachel Alexandra accomplished in 2009 was basically unheard of for a 3yr.old filly to accomplish. No doubt, she had a remarkable 2009 season. But that's now her legacy. Just that 2009 season. A "one year wonder" if your will. Zenyatta is going to be remembered for a career. Not just one year. Because no one was able to beat her during any season. And the competition has only one more shot to accomplish that feat. IMO, very doubtful they will.

Now RA apologists will use the hypothetical and assume RA would have beaten Zen because of the slow time. Yet, Rachel runs slower than Blind Luck and Afleet Express going 10F in a pedestrian 28 sec final quarter. It's over. Rachel fans all got PWNED in 2010. RA's 2009 is now a "mirage" and 2010 is the year when it spoke the truth about her. And Zen never had to face her to expose her. Earlier retirement = raise the white flag. Debate between Z vs RA is over.

I really don't have anything against Rachel herself, but grew tired of Jess mouthing off about how he wanted a three-race series between these two horses last year when he assumed Zen was retired. This 2010 season will always be remembered how the "true" Queen revealed herself and not some younger imposter to the throne who retired already. Ultimate crow eating year to all RAbids who laughed at Zen last year.

The only time this race would've ever been remotely competitive between Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra was in 2009. When Rachel was in the kind of form she was in when winning the 09' Preakness, Haskell, and Woodward. That said, even with Rachel in that kind of form, I still believe Zenyatta would've ran her down. She's just too good. She refuses to quit accelerating until she's passed every horse that lay in her path. In 2010, this race would've been a joke. Given how poorly Rachel raced. JMO.

Zenyatta beat BOTH Summer Bird and Colonel John who were Both the TOP horses in the BC Classic so there is NO saying that Zenyatta has NOT run against anyone Good! Zenyatta also beat Richards Kid and Gio Point in the BC Classic which were ALSO two more TOP horses in 2009.
The only horse left in the 2009/2010 competition is Rachel Alexander, so I hope Rachel Alexander and Zenyatta will have at least 2 or 3 meets TOGETHER befor e their respectice racing carrears are over.

see i dont like match races the reason why is Ruffian, all a match race is is taking 2 horses and just flat out running them as fast as they can possibly go, and its pretty much the one who is less afraid of the pain because it will hurt, thats when its all about heart. they are exciting but theres always that maybe about a breakdown and it would be better not to risk it. so why dont they just put them both into a stakes race instead of a match

I don't blame Rachel's connections for ducking out of that race at Oaklawn, even w/ the $5 million purse and public pressure for a showdown. Also, I don't blame Zen's connections for being ultra-conservative w/ their mare; if they want to stay home until the Breeder's Cup that's fine w/ me. Unfortunately, today's race horses are delicate and injury-prone thanks to short-sighted breeding practices that favor speed and precocity over stamina. Why risk injury or a breakdown--remember Ruffian?

@dubby300 I think a lot of East Coast sportswriters and horse racing analysts were saying Zenyatta lacked the Beyer speed figs to compete w/ that field. Also, females (i.e. fillies and mares) have historically demonstrated they are at a competitive disadvantage vs. males. No female had won the BCC up until Zenyatta. And Zen went off at 5/2, paying 7.60 to win (closer to 3-1). If you recall, the second selection was 3-1. If you look at the tote board you can see there was no heavy favs.
