@Simplybl00dy 12-15-2004 Rated 0 This song may or may not be about Stephen Gaskin, a late sixties San Francisco counterculture figure who later moved (along with quite a few other hippies) to Tennessee where they founded the commune/intentional community called "The Farm" which still exists and where Stephen is still living.
@Charliedethklok7 American Beauty, Then Working Man's Dead. After those you'll probably be able to figure them out for yourself. Start with their early stuff and work forward. In my opinion, their later stuff is more of an acquired taste, but that's just me.
i got drunk on saturday, went to sleep at 7 am on sunday, was hungover, wrote an economics exam today bombed it, still hungover, got home, took a bong toke and listened to this song for the first time... i feel fine, i think...
This song helped a shaking, small, living man make it through the early morning hours without giving up. Thank god for the Grateful Dead. Iife would be half the trip it might have been without them.
Live Dead album had the best version of this song... listened to it the first time I did pot...and blow...and acid....my first prostitute.....and those eighteen tequila shots.... that was a crazy four and a half minutes I tell you what...
there were thousands of psychedelic folk bands coming out of the sixties, but most couldnt even touch the Dead. The sound, power and passion of the dead is unparalleled. they were the best.....were the best
@Bubblewrap34 Saint Stephen was real saint who was martyred. What could be more cool than a psychadelic song about him? I don't like a lot of things about the Grateful Dead and the crowd of pig costume peasant hippies they encouraged, but I love this song.
@spiralcosmosart Lots of biblical imagery in their work, and Jerry's solo work as well. The old folk number, "Samson & Delilah" was a regular Sunday song in the 80's. None of them could remotely be identified as Christian believers, though. They (and Robert Hunter, of course, just dug the imagery, as well as such things as card games, freight trains, cats, etc. ( Donna became a Christian after her stint with The Dead, and some misfortune as well)

All I can ever think when I hear these guys is "thanks dad". He'll never see this, but I have the best father in the world with the best taste in music.

You wanna know why I love this song? It made me a better person. Before I discovered Grateful Dead I was this stressed trapped and selfish ass. I would make a big deal out of things that weren't neccesary. But after I heard this song I suddenly changed. I was being nice to people, I was feeling cheerful, I felt free, I started taking more notice of things that were important like poverty, war, and other problems.
Now I listen to this everyday to keep me feeling good. Thanks so much GD!!
@Django5198 i know exactly what you mean! the same thing happened to me! except with jefferson airplane, but it is still similar. without it, i wouldnt be anything like i am today. @Django5198 I am glad that this beautiful song changed your life. I don't quite understand all the poetic verses, but they kind of add up to a heightened sense of consciousness. Even since then, i play to this song everyday.
