  • and it turns blue!!! sharp and narrow! several seasons, one man gathers what another man spills, st stephen will remain all he lost he shall regain rock onintothefuturehappiness

  • Skellington smoking a nice fat joint.

  • I would love to know what this song is about would any one explain to me please?!

  • @Simplybl00dy St. Stephen was the first martyr for CHRIST in Acts after CHRIST'S RESURRECTION.

  • @Simplybl00dy 12-15-2004 Rated 0 This song may or may not be about Stephen Gaskin, a late sixties San Francisco counterculture figure who later moved (along with quite a few other hippies) to Tennessee where they founded the commune/intentional community called "The Farm" which still exists and where Stephen is still living.

  • i only clicked on this because my name is steven so i was like cool and i am so glad that i clicked on this because ths song is great

  • whoa, didn't realize the trippy color affects... rock on baby

nothin like comin home from a hard days work and just kickin it to the best music ever made

  • I want to get into this band, they're great.

Any albums on where to start? they seem to have lots of music.

  • @Charliedethklok7 American Beauty, Then Working Man's Dead. After those you'll probably be able to figure them out for yourself. Start with their early stuff and work forward. In my opinion, their later stuff is more of an acquired taste, but that's just me.

  • @Charliedethklok7 Aoxomoxoa

  • i got drunk on saturday, went to sleep at 7 am on sunday, was hungover, wrote an economics exam today bombed it, still hungover, got home, took a bong toke and listened to this song for the first time... i feel fine, i think...

  • @benlorenc hahah, Did you tell your friends on facebook too?

  • @Robbi159 yeah, i told that story but replaced the song with Drake-Over.

  • My name is Stephen.

    I approve this message.

  • My favorite Grateful Dead song!

  • This song helped a shaking, small, living man make it through the early morning hours without giving up. Thank god for the Grateful Dead. Iife would be half the trip it might have been without them.

  • thnx jerry

  • talk about your baby talk about your ills one man gathers what another man spills

  • @MidgetMelon Not cancer, or AIDS

  • Live Dead album had the best version of this song... listened to it the first time I did pot...and blow...and acid....my first prostitute.....and those eighteen tequila shots.... that was a crazy four and a half minutes I tell you what...

  • @poeticreject i have that record, its so great

  • It is well known, the Dead are not the best at what they do...they're the ONLY ones that do what they do!

  • @statewideklinger

there were thousands of psychedelic folk bands coming out of the sixties, but most couldnt even touch the Dead. The sound, power and passion of the dead is unparalleled. they were the best.....were the best

  • This is their only Christian themed

    song that I'm aware of.

  • @spiralcosmosart who knows if its theyre only christian themed song they have so many haha

  • @Bubblewrap34 Saint Stephen was real saint who was martyred. What could be more cool than a psychadelic song about him? I don't like a lot of things about the Grateful Dead and the crowd of pig costume peasant hippies they encouraged, but I love this song.

  • @spiralcosmosart Lots of biblical imagery in their work, and Jerry's solo work as well. The old folk number, "Samson & Delilah" was a regular Sunday song in the 80's. None of them could remotely be identified as Christian believers, though. They (and Robert Hunter, of course, just dug the imagery, as well as such things as card games, freight trains, cats, etc. ( Donna became a Christian after her stint with The Dead, and some misfortune as well)

  • @Django5198 the same exact thing happened to me

  • i saw THE DEAD in 2004, is was my first "dead"type show and they played this song. Long live the Dead!! RIP Jerry, Pigpen, Brent, Keith, Vince.

  • @migbee lol...im not sure i guess that seat was cursed, after brent died i wouldnt of even joined the band if u paid me a million dollars haha.

  • woah is the picture changing colors or is this acid kicking in

  • walking barefoot on the beach, no responsibilities, just friends and exchanging relaxing and mellow interludes.

  • Frisco is the craziest place (by a good meaning) in the world.

  • 3 friends wanted to get in Guinness. The first wanted to be the fastest swimmer. the second wanted to be the best basketball player. and the third wanted to be the best musician. when the results came out the first person said, "Yes! im the fastest swimmer!" the second person yelled, "yes! im the best basketball player!" and the third person said, "who the fuck is the grateful dead?!!"

  • watch the trippy morphing skull

  • I'm so strange... I love both this and black metal :D Grateful Dead it's so GOOD !

  • what a wonderfull song,what a wondrefull cd

  • You wanna know why I love this song? It made me a better person. Before I discovered Grateful Dead I was this stressed trapped and selfish ass. I would make a big deal out of things that weren't neccesary. But after I heard this song I suddenly changed. I was being nice to people, I was feeling cheerful, I felt free, I started taking more notice of things that were important like poverty, war, and other problems.

Now I listen to this everyday to keep me feeling good. Thanks so much GD!!

  • @Django5198 No, I don't want to know why you love this song.

I am currently enjoying it because it is a series of sounds that my ears aren't complaining about as much as they would something I wasn't enjoying.

  • @MorkaGraven You gotta be more clear man, you seem to be skirting around saying something, without saying it. Just get to the point.

  • @fatmanrocks13 I did get to the point. It's less aesthetically displeasing than something I would downright dislike.

  • @MorkaGraven You sound like the people george carlin makes fun of.

  • @MorkaGraven Or made fun of, rather.

  • @Django5198 same story here, its amazing isnt it?

  • @Django5198 i know exactly what you mean! the same thing happened to me! except with jefferson airplane, but it is still similar. without it, i wouldnt be anything like i am today. I used to be incredibly mean to people for no reason at all. but after i herd their songs, including some from the greatful dead, i dont want to do that anymore. the older music is so much better than a lot of what is out today..

    1

  • @Django5198 I am glad that this beautiful song changed your life. I don't quite understand all the poetic verses, but they kind of add up to a heightened sense of consciousness. As a teenage boy, I listened to Smiley Smile by the Beach Boys. Even though this was a stripped-down version of SMILE (now finally available) the music and arty lyrics took my spirit to a better place. I've seen both Jerry Garcia & Brian Wilson in concert. Both set a grand musical legacy.

  • @Django5198 the same exact thing happened to me. its funny how such a simple thing can change your life.

  • @Django5198 music doesnt change a person. you did that on your own

  • @TTxSilentHill Thanks for that! I suppose I kinda did it on my own, but when I'm in a bad mood, happy music really lifts me

  • @TTxSilentHill lol, its good to know a fellow deadhead isnt braindead! thx for the advice btw. i know u were talkn to Django5198 but i happend to see ur comment and just had to reply

  • @Django5198 My dad is a massive deadhead and kept a filing cabinet full of tapes of dead concerts. I would listen to them as a boy with those big headphones on when my parents were asleep. I'm like you I'm convinced listening to the gd has made me a better person. Keep on truckin mate

  • @Django5198 you sure it wasnt because the lsd lol

  • @Django5198 listen to it high man

  • @Django5198 AMEN!

  • wtf..why is this the first time im listening to this band. ..what have i been doing all my life.

  • @alpengloww Awww its okay. ♥ WELCOME ♥ and enjoy all the fruits of the Dead. Never too late brother. Never. xx ~"Jenny"

  • @alpengloww there is life before you find GD and life after

wellcome to the other side :)

  • one man gathers what another man spills...so beautiful truly the greatest music

  • Can you answer? Yes I can, But what would be the answer, to the answer man?

  • I was at a hippie festival this year, and had my first experience with shrooms. To say the least, i wasnt having the best time. There was a point where i completely forgot what music was when i was in my tent by the stage (no music was being played at this moment). It scared me because ive been playing guitar and writing music since i was ten. Then, this song came on over the sound system, and with a sigh of relief i said to myself, "This is music". Even since then, i play to this song everyday.

  • i dig this and dubstep equally, but iv sure been a deadhead longer hhah

  • @ModWilson lol like it so he actually gets called

  • put in your own work handle your own shit

  • Dude, everyone just chill. Quit being so hateful. It's all a matter of personal opinion. I can't look at the comments of any Grateful Dead song without seeing some sort of stupid debate about music.

    Just enjoy the music.

  • Im only 15 and i seen Furthur 6 times and i think i earned the title at my school "The Dead Head"

  • Bob's Scream is the best.

  • @souljaboy765 i thot tht 2 tht there will always be people who like older music. Its not the generation tho, its the music, the beautiful music in the 60s and 70s wasnt good cuz it was 60s and 70s obviously but it was cause it was perfect. Thats why people thousands of years in the future with come back to this stuff and ponder at its lyricism and its gracefulness. I hope u know what i mean.

    And yes im 14.
