James felt like it would be too emotional to play live because this is the song that was played at Cliff Burton's cremation and Cliff had a big part in writeing it. Also they were waiting for the "right bass player" before they attempted it. Personally I think that Newsted could have done better than Traho or whatever his name is. However no one can replace Cliff.

This the greatest metal.... no the greatest song EVER of any genre, off of the greatest album EVER! I just cant put into words how much this song means to me. Its so hardcore at the beginning and end, but the middle section just gives me chills everytime i hear it. Cliff probably wasnt even in his prime when he wrote this materpiece. Orion was written while Cliff was alive. Jason went to their concerts before playing with em. Orion was made with Cliff for sure, it came out on Master of Puppets before Jason joined the band.

Jason is a good bassist, no doubt however personally I believe a bassist has way more to offer a band playing in the style Cliff and Rob play. Another sick bassist playing in that style, Flea.
