The part of Japan I live in (Kansai), not too many people like it. Natto is usually eaten in the Kanto and northern regions.. But I enjoy its slimy, bitter-savoury-unwashed-foot-sole-stinky taste.
After eating Jellied eels, "Bagoong" Filipino rotten fish-paste, and Giant African Snails in peanut soup (thanks Mum and Dad) for 15 or so years growing up in London, I graduated to the "able to eat anything (within good reason)" state of mind. And this is why multiculturalism works. o.O
Do you eat pig? They eat their own poop, so technically pigs are poop because you are what you eat right? So you eat your poop and let Japs enjoy their HEALTHY AND NUTRITIOUS soy beans :)
ahaha i loved your expression and how you called it vile. It was hard for me too! there are some videos on youtube that talks about how to make it easier to eat it. I think there are many interesting recipes, like with miso soup, in a seaweed roll, etcc - however I'll never, EVER do natto pasta and toast.
I know how you feel. I'm also trying to get myself to enjoy Natto. In fact I'm buying some more tomorrow, even though I'm still not quite used to the taste. :)
it tastes like smoked cheese with some coffee... as a vegetarian i added natto to my diet... is not a delicious food (actually it has a bad after taste), but it's good and healthy. you can pretty much get full by eating only a pack of natto with rice and a miso soup! its also cheap!
FFS!!! I just can't stand those people who are trying exotic food without knowing how to eat it!!! First of all, if its the first time u eat natto, have some rice with it! Then, if ur not dumb, take a few to begin, then try it another time, it won't be easier by having a lot of it in a row! Finally, ur brain has to get used to something new, that looks not good in its appearance and smells, so you will have to eat it 2 or 3 times before it will admit you wont die of it & apreciate it...Noob!
@therealbigtasty Perhaps you should try the soup that's made with Natto, so you get the Natto but with less of the full taste? Cooking with Dog has a video with it. ^^
Hahaha what a hilarious video. Eat it with a bowl of rice dude! Also, dice up some green onions and throw them in there before mixing it all up - I know it's an acquired taste (I was raised Japanese) but I find it to be quite tasty with the onions, japanese mustard, and soy sauce
although I'm pretty sure you're supposed to eat it over rice, i think that would make the texture a little more bearable, kinda like putting raw egg over rice with a little soy sauce, which actually that's pretty good...
I also eat natto without rice *G* And I like it. Huh anyway, I have once make it really slimy and that wasn`t very oishi anymore. (Ok I eat it, but it was too slimy )
Yeah, I am also "forcing" myself to acquire a taste for it. I usually eat it for breakkie every other day, add some rice (at least 1/2 cup) and some soy sauce (like you did). I actually now am starting to enjoy the flavor! Hopefully you will, too. Good luck! :)
I love beans too, but natto is far form regular beans. They are sticky as hell and smell so bad (after you finish and leave the bowl for like 2 minutes); smells sorta like urine.. As for the taste, it doesnt taste anything like fermented cheese. To me, it tasted like weak coffee at first. I can only eat it with rice. Tastes too shitty to swallow without rice..
I'm sorry, could you restate that? Please have someone you know who's a little more acquainted with English help express what you're saying, we're all curious to know...
It's a liiiiiitle bit misleading when people say Natto is eaten in Japan as a breakfast staple, because it IS a regional food. NOT ALL Japanese eat this stuff. Especially if you're from western and/or southern parts of Japan, chances are you haven't even tasted it before. I grew up in Tokyo, and I just can't friggin' get enough of it. Been away from the country for 20+ years now, but I make it a rule to eat Natto at least a few times a week no matter what time of the day!! Delish!
I watched your vid not too long ago...and between you and another youtuber, I found a japanese grocery store here in Phoenix and tried it myself. Check it out if you get the chance. I only wish I had some lambs kidneys to got with it. :)
oh something tells me that would be no problem. hahahaaha I'm a huge natto fan now. Check out my video where I put it in a PB&J sandwich and knock it back.
I can't get enough of natto. The first time I tried it, I wasn't terribly impressed with it, but that may have been partly because I ate it with basmati rice that my roommate had cooked instead of with Asian medium-grain rice. Now I eat it fairly regularly on rice (the proper kind), topped with the included sauce packets, soy sauce, bonito flakes, green onion, and kamaboko slices. Yummy stuff!
Its kinda like young Japanese who can not understand blue cheese. People tend to hold bad image to food that uses bacteria as process. But since it has bacteria on in it does not mean anything bad or disgusting. Rather they are made in clean place to propagate Natto-bacteria. Steamed soy been and Natto-bacteria and thats it. Natto takes away cancer in blood, and contains high protain. Taste are good for people who eats it right and are used to.
I really admire your "just jump in and do it" attitude. I'm gonna go give natto a try, but maybe with rice and soy sauce first like some of the other folks have suggested. Cheers! :-)
Tasty, I'm in the LA area, too---I get great natto at Japanese stores all over town, and I particularly love to order natto rolls at Makoto Sushi in Encino. Try it with shiso. Yum!
Actually, it requires the ingestion of rice. I've never seen someone in Japan eat it straight out of the package. Make some nice warm rice, get the natto that comes with the soy and mustard. It really is tasty stuff.
I agree. I know of no one who eats it out of the package like that. Rice, soysause, chinese style mustard, and a couple of eggs..cooked over it. Yum!! Oshii katta desu!!!
hahaha cuz it looks like someone dump a pile of sperm on it perhaps....
im not sure if differnt brand name comes wif different taste or smell... the one i got is fairly ok. not the greatest food on the world but not that gross at all...
then again im hardcore asian. haha i ate lost of gross stuff. u shd go to thailand and try fried insects. i want to go there n try it someday.

You should have put it with rice, soy sauce, and a tad of mustard. Seems like it doesn't have the bad smell anymore, and reminds me of blue cheese.

Natto is a japanese indigenous peoples food.
They called Jyomon people.
Todays Japanese bloods halves are this.
another halfs are from korea.
Natto has about 5000years history.
Nothing is so good as health.
a hump of blood is melted by natto.
cholesterol is too.
