  • Very well done and a good companion piece to the documentary I have with Murrow and McCarthy!

  • Senator McCarthy an American hero..thank you Senator for all you have done

  • 2007? right on! let us never forget one of the most pathetic chapters in american history. anyone know how mccarthy died? he was a raging alcoholic and after he was disgraced as a result of naming powerful people as commies he died in a barroom brawl. he bled to death after having a broken beer bottle stuck in his neck.

  • Joe was right!

  • Also, Jesus was a Communist.

  • Technological advances change the playing field. TV destroyed McCarthy in the end when the public saw his behavior in hearings and turned on him. The internet will destroy the fascist Right Wing in America once again. All they know is fear. They are taught it by their ministers and priests. Their politicians use it. They hate other Americans if they're not afraid. The cult of fear is an absolute scourge in this country.

  • Judging from a lot of these comments I believe the liberal mentality is going to pay a horrible price for their mindless stampede toward the most needless & destructive blood letting the world has ever known. Why do you idiots refuse to acknowledge the millions & millions of innocent people that have been murdered by communist ?

  • McCarthy was a drunken buffoon. The figures he trotted out about the number of communists went up and down like a bride's nightdress.

  • Excellent documentary, suitable for school use. However, it would be nice to examine McCarthy a little more for his motivations; in this and even more in other films of this tyoe he comes off as pretty much having only evil intentions based on ambition, when indeed he was a product of his time and upbringing.

  • well put together

  • where did you get your video footage? I'm using McCarthy for NHD this year, and need footage... :) Thanks!

  • Sorry, this is more liberal propaganda bullshit. McCarthy told the truth, it's much worse in 2010. The liberal mentality is totally void of common decency. You shitbags are a worthless subspecies breathing up,(wasting), perfectly good air and contaminating our beautiful planet.

  • @jesdar65 Nothing, NOTHING McCarthy said was truth. The people he said were "communists" usually weren't, those who WERE were not "spies of Moscow" but good Americans looking for a better way to establish American justice and equality. There is NOTHING unAmerican about socialism or Marxism, and making it "the ememy" destroyed plenty of innocent lives in this country, and has led to the murder of millions worldwide for no reason. McCarthy or Reagan as the worst American ever is a tossup.

  • I believe McCarthy was anti-American.

  • McCarthy was right in 1950 and McCarthy is still right today in 2010!! The person doing the voice over for this video is 100000% wrong period! McCarthy was a great man indeed! A++++ The left wing and or liberals will always hate America! If you don't like America and if you do don't like Capitalism then you need to move out of America now and move into a communist or socialist country!!

  • Because you facist asshole, accusation is not proof!!! Decent is NOT disloyalty! Read history you fucking DUNCE!

  • That guy is a communist!

  • I teach U.S. history to high school juniors. I think that this is excellent!! I would like to use it to teach my classes about McCarthyism!

    teacherP

  • Macarthy was a tailgunner who experienced combat in WWII. Macarthy never tried to lie about his wound as he did not have a purple heart. Unions were a front for communist organizations at the time as they claim to be today. The Venona report completley vindicated Macarthy. Oh, and Macarthy was found not guilty in the Army hearings and Welch's aid was in fact a Communist.

  • well put together documentry, but not a very good narrating voice.

  • narrator has most annoying voice ever

  • ...

Wow. If this review did not place in the top seven, I would love to see those that did.

A bit late I know, but a great video here. I hope all of your group has had better luck and recognition since then.

    Very nicely done.

    ...tom...

  • When anybody tries to preach disunity, tries to pit one of us against the other, through class warfare, race hatred, or religious intolerence, You know that person seeks to rob us of our freedom, and destroy our very lives. And, We know what to do about it! Working together to produce an ever greater abundance of material and spiritual values for all. That is the secret of American Prosperity...

  • It's happening again. If people have noticed, our freedom is in question and it is due to George Bush and his patriot act. Under the Patriot Act, we do not have constitutional rights AT ALL. No 5th amendment right, no due process rights or illegal searches and seizures. I have not seen any administrative act to do away with the Patriot Act because it is, in and of itself, a constitutional violation and George Bush should be prosecuted for war crimes against humanity.

  • McCarthy was ironically was the perfect communist - disagree with him and you were an enemy of the state.

  • SimCity?

  • God, I can't even believe there is a single person like some of these on here who would defend this evil man to this day and not see the parallel with the evil reign of Cheney and Puppet Boy Bush.

  • it is a reason why the government should have control but not to much control

  • @cmhmuscle: Senator McCarthy was a good man who was attempting to rid the US of CPUSA members who coverly possessed positions of power, sympathisers of the radical left, and Soviet infiltration of our political, social, and legal institutions. It is fact not fiction that communist held influence in the ACLU, the NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), academia, and media. Many people were justifiably exposed.

  • @DELTAFORCE851 No, McCarthy was a scumbag, who destroyed the lives of good people out of his desire to promote the ideals of hate and greed. There was no "influence" of those trying to 'destroy our country' in the ACLU, NAACP, SCLC, media or academics. Yes, there was socialism, and instead of saying why it was wrong, the despicable LIE that it was "unAmerican" and had to be viewed as 'enemies' was cooked up. NOBODY was "exposed" except McCarthy himself, as a liar and fraud.

  • Everything has changed a lot since the McCarthy era. The only thing that we have to fear right now the the joke that is democracy.

  • For someone who hated communism, McCarthy acted allot like Stalin.

  • Now that's a good one. Just how did he do that, Dick?

  • denouncing people for there ideas, attacking those with different views.

  • Give me one example.

  • McCarthy the closeted degenerate queen.

  • Take your own advice buddy

  • About what, pal?

  • Strange how the capitalist media destroyed McCarthy? Should they no have been on his side against the reds?

  • Nice music in the background. I think much of it was the theme to "Goldfinger." :)

  • Nice work but a snow job. Asserting that TV was the key to McCarthy's downfall is the same as asserting the Allen wrench repaired the BMW. It wasn't the medium, it was the message that brought McCarthy down. The attitude and approach of this video ignores that simple fact. If the media is the "hero", the "rescuer", the Teiresias, then the truth is secondary. I.e. if TV shows it, it must be true. This is a dangerous (obviously) mindset and has lead TV to its total moral vacuum.

  • I actually really enjoyed this. This is one of the only pieces I've seen that displays actual footage of Murrow on that broadcast. As a side note, unfortunately, that broadcast lead to both McCarthy's demise, and to Murrow's journalistic career. It was a great act of courage for Murrow, but it's a shame that at that point, broadcast news did not have the clout of print journalism.

  • N0SENS3

  • "I just won't get down in the gutter with that man!"

    IKE

  • Atomic Spies refer to various people in the US, Britain, and Canada who are thought to have illicitly given info about nuclear weapons to the Soviet Union *during* WWII (when USSR was an *ally*) and the early Cold War. Exactly what was given, and whether everyone on the list gave it, is still a matter of some scholarly dispute, and in some cases what were originally seen as strong testimonies or confessions were admitted as fabricated in later years. a movement among scientists to share info ...

  • Documentary lacks research. We found out after the "fall" of the Soviet Union when their state documents were opened up that McCarthy was in fact correct that the Communists had infiltrated Hollywood and the US Department of State.

  • With millions of Americans joining the Communist Party during the Great Depression (and millions joining the "Christian" Nazi Bund which was protected by the Committee), it is 100% credible that some communists worked in Hollywood. Some openly, some later cloaked out of fear.

Look up Venona papers on Wikipedia: "a combination of circumstantial evidence, corroborating testimony from Eastern Bloc defectors, direct surveillance, informants and other means."

    Doubts re CIA-tainted evidence.

  • A fine video, well done. Your capacity for condensing history is notable; this is digestible, but not simple.

As an aside, is the music from Sim City 3000?

  • Very good ... really good ...

  • mc carthy = fascist

  • It is not merely a slur to call McCarthy "fascist".

When captured Amer POWs were gunned down in cold blood at Malmedy, McCarthy took the podium to defend Nazi murderers. ANTI-AMERICAN?!!!

McCarthy & Nixon worked to steer HUAC away from investigating Nazi collaborators during WW2, incl top US corporations, incl Allen & Foster Dulles - CIA director and State Dept, incl Averill Harriman and Prescott BUSH.

This is now revealed (partly) in Nat Archives, and by retired Fed Prosecutor John Loftus.

  • ADD: More govt docs existed on top US leaders, the Bush family and friends, on collaboration w Nazis, which SHOULD be in US National Archives, but some were destroyed during the 1st Bush admin "to make room".

Lack of space for records, perfectly understandable.

It is probably already underway to label the National Archives as subversive. The Bill of Rights has long been seen as subversive. (But the US was born in subversion to the Crown.) To KGB, Gestapo, & CIA, Truth = subversion.

  • Amazing! Where did you get your "facts"? Wikipedia!!! You made a good video (images, transitions, etc.), but maybe you should try a different subject. With Venona, Bozell, and Stanton Evans, you can't get away with this liberal propaganda anymore.

  • DCINSC7,

Wikipedia usually provides a balance of ALL significant opinions on any topic, right, left, up, down, allegations and criticism.

Wikipedia sometimes offers multiple and conflicting "fringe" views, for example, a range of definitions of "New World Order" from communism to satanism.

A study of Wikipedia found inaccuracies, but roughly similar frequency as Encyclopedia Britannica or similar sources considered unbiased.

To list Brent Bozell as no agenda is to consider McCarthy unbiased.

  • Tell the film maker, not me.

  • The really sad thing about McCarthy is that he was more right than he knew. There were hundreds of Soviet agents in the US Govt.

From Alger Hiss right up to Lauchlin Currie advisor to Roosevelt. Venona transcripts were so Top Secret they werent made public to 1992 or so. These were decoded Soviet

transmissions that named hundreds of agents some of which havent been identified to this day.

  • you're wrong!

After the fall of the USSR secret KGB documents revealed that they did assign many of the agents on the "list"

this is retarded and unfactual -no wonder it didn't make it in!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks, very well put together. Parallels with our own time, perhaps.

  • Excellent video!

Will definitely use this as a resource for my essay!

  • why don't you read a book such as "Blacklisted by History" by M. Stanton Evens instead of relying on some losers propaganda video on you tube. Jeese louise, use your freakin' brain!

  • thank you! i include this documentary in a presentation in my school under "further resources". great work :)

  • A Suburb effort, on a subject which affects us all today - hysteria used to control the populace is a technique as old as empire. Those that control us now (or attempt to) do so with the same tools, fear, hysteria, and the big lie, that Tailgunner Joe used. As soon as you no longer buy into the fear, you see the humbug that lies behind the curtain.

"Those who sacrifice security for liberty, deserve neither" Benjamin Franklin.

  • Anyone see similarities with the US's current govt, and the way it operates?!

  • Nice work. Sorry you guys didn't win.

Joe McCarthy was a sick, sad man. While I think you may give Murrow too much credit, he definitely contributed to the downfall of that pathetic lunatic.

I feel sad that there are still Americans who have bought into the revisionist ravings of that ugly blonde woman who writes those awful books and appears on delusional television shows, and think that McCarthy had any legitimacy. Just a bunch of freedom haters.

  • McCarthy was authorized by the Establishment to go after domestic Communism to deflect attention away from the Establishment. It was only when he went after William Bundy (Skull and Bones) and Bundy's contributions to Alger Hiss' defense fund did McCarthy cross the line and had to be destroyed.

  • The reporter/Joe said 57. Get your facts straight if your going to bother to make a vidio. There is a copy of the reporters article in "Blacklisted By Histor" By M. Stanton Evens.

  • McCarthy originally DID claim 205. Only later, under pressure, did the number suddenly diminish to 57, making him look a fool.

    By the way, it's "video".

  • Sorry cool-aid drinker but you are wrong. In an article in the Wheeling intelligencer dated Febuary 11th, the day after the speech at Wheeling, it is reported that the Senator said that there were "over fifty" suspects of communist affiliation in the State Department, confirming the numbers he used at Wheeling. Read a little, learn a lot. Also the HEADLINE of an article with the same date in the Denver Post says "57 Reds Help Shaping U.S. Policy: McCarthy". Tsk tsk

  • Excellent footage and editing. Thank you for creating this resource!

  • this is really great

    what music did you use?

  • jSUT blow the all up. GOD. i mean give nme a break lol.

  • kinda...ou fuckin jerkkk

  • GOD im a Crzy man. i truist in you,

  • Taduh. Hes had is fun. If he loves us.

  • OUTSTANDING CLIP

    AMAZING

AND SOOOOOO CURRRENT TO WHAT WE DEALING WITH TODAY!

    terrorism - communism

fucking lou dobbs calls anyone he does not like a communist

  • if you're looking for more knowledge about McCarthy and his scare on communism this really helps you understand better. Thank you!

  • No it doesn't, it's just TV and it isn't educating you here. I suggest you read some of the documentation in ex-FBI agent's Skousen's book _The Naked Capitalist_ (early 1970s), and the revisit this page.

  • Not really. There have been so many books written since the release of the Venona decripts (Google it if you don't know what it is)that have debunked the "common knowledge" that Mccarthy was wrong. Pick up "Blacklisted by History" if you really want to "understand better." P.S. There really WERE Communists in the Government. Even top scientists in the Manhatten project. OMG read a little, learn a lot.

  • Great job the ghost of Jo MCcarhty surges threw our poltical life sitll today as the frist populist conservative ever MCcarhty was himself closer to the old communist Cio working class demographic. His fall would set the movment back only to later find there crown prince in regan however the working class left will return the new silent majority that gets enough benfits to live will come back. When fox news plays on your TV joe MCcarhty is with us still but not for long

  • You have done a great job!

  • God Bless Joseph McCarthy. God Bless his family, whever they are. Don't forget that some of us out there know the truth. God forgive us for letting these lies change the world. God forgive our silence. McCarthy saved this nation, I'll teach my children the truth.

  • Moron

  • You're not alone crefonso, others of us know that McCarthy was doing good work to save America from the Communists. The modern incarnations are the Neo-Cons, Trotskyites, dual citizens etc...in power. If only people had listened to him and they didn't use the idiot box TeeVee to railroad him.

  • Amen Brother, I have a library of books that tell the real story from people that knew, starting with W.Chambers in Whitness when he call Alger Hiss on being a "fellow traveler"

  • Sadwings i'm with you here.

Everythime I mention mccarthy i get

the same respons "oh the that communist hater"

The far left is just as bad as the far right

becuase both groups only have lame talking points and both oblivious to the real world

and to be honest, they can't think 4 themselves. I hate communists.

  • It's also curious that you failed to actually show McCarthy speaking. You showed others' comments about him, and also provided your own, but the viewer never actually hears McCarthy himself speak. Is that because you are afraid that the myth of McCarthy as belligerent bully is easily exposed as a lie? McCarthy was a patriot. He did what others were either afraid or uncaring enough to do. History has proven him right. That's why liberals have such a vested interest in re-writing it.

  • Well said SW. McCarthy was a patriot.

  • Thanks. In light of the material now available to historians and scholars, McCarthy definitely deserves to have his reputation restored. However, liberals will never allow this to happen. Its a crying shame that liberals during the Cold War LOVED Stalin, but hated a true American patriot like McCarthy.

  • So what exactly did the brave patriot and on-again, off-again war hero accomplish during his reign as one of the most charismatic senators in the country? Oh wait, that's right- nothing. McCarthy couldn't reemember the names of the people on his famous list, or even how many there were. You know, kinda like how many combat flights he'd been on, what his rank in the Marines was, how he'd broken his ankle, or how many drinks he'd had the night before.

  • All his information was a stale rehash of information and accusations that were years or decades old, and the Tydings Committee concluded that the State Department's internat security was fine. When he went after USIA and VoA- his only tangible success- at least one engineer committed suicide and after McCarthy had the USIA libraries pull books he didn't like, many of them were immolated, thus making him, by definition, a book burner.

  • Your ignorance is amazing. The fact that many, but not all, of his cases were brought up before by Martin Dies( a House Democrat)only proved McCarthy's point that the federal government was doing NOTHING about its security risks. The Venona files , as well as FBI archival material have PROVEN that dozens of McCarthy's cases were in fact agents in employ of the Kremlin. Read some history.

  • The Tydings Commitee, I repeat, found no new evidence to substantiate McCarthy's claims and found that the State Dept. had an adequate security apparatus. In fact, many of the people McCarthy claimed were communists working at State had ceased to work, or had NEVER worked for state at all such as Dorothy Kenyon and Howard Shapley. Check your facts dude, your head's as empty as McCarthy's bottle of Jack at the end of a watercoloring party with Roy Cohn.

  • Seriously, the only thing McCarthy ever did was show up, claim there was a massive amount of communists in the government that no one was doing anything about, hemmed and hawed when he was actually forced to produce evidence. McCarthy never single-handedly identified or outed a communist who wasn't already under suspicion, and a bunch of the communists he did interview he never actually accused of anything. Quit reading stuff on Newsmax. That crap will rot your brain.

  • First, McCarthy is shown speaking at 3:26. Also, the video acknowledges the presence of spies within the government, citing Hiss and the Rosenbergs. McCarthy and others using McCarthyist tactics during the time weren't even necessarily concerned with outing spies, but eliminating communists and sympathizers within our government as a whole. While some may see McCarthy's goals as patriotic, I tend to find them un-American, for part of what makes America great is that it is (at least in theory)

  • something of a bastion of freedom. While spies infiltrating the government and committing treason is one thing, cleansing the government of those with different political or social ideologies is quite another. McCarthy's intent may have been noble, but he approached it in the wrong way and went over the edge with his actions. While the Venona transcripts prove that there were communist spies inside the US government, how many of them did Joe McCarthy manage to nab and neutralize?

  • Dan, it wasn't McCarthy's job to neutralize them. It was his job to expose security risks. There were dozens of his cases that have turned up in Venona, FBI archives, and elsewhere. He was right on target with the people he investigated.

  • How can you consider McCarthy's goal to be un-American? He was trying to rid OUR government of people who were actively engaged in sabotage. Didn't you hear what he asked Mandel.."Did you ever engage in sabotage?" Mandel's answer was to plead the 5th amendment. Doesn't that tell you something?

  • Perhaps I should rephrase:

Purging the government of traitors and spies - good.

Purging the United States of all political parties and ideologies besides a single, homogenous brand of Republicanism - bad, and un-American. I find it hard to believe that Annie Lee Moss, a cafeteria worker, had the means to undermine the American government and actively engage in sabotage. Maybe she could've poisoned somebody's food. But there would obviously be proof of that, and there isn't any that I have seen.

  • Well said! I find it amazing, and frightening,

though not surprising, that many of the respondents to this thread seem to have absolutely no idea what "Tail Gunner Joe" really represented - the power of a government to exploit people's fears in order to jusitify the denial of basic, constitutional rights of innocent people in any self-serving cause when it deems fit.

FDR said, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." An elucidating post - thanks!

  • Ms Moss was a code clerk with the Signal Corps with a security clearance at the time that she drew the attention of Sen. McCarthy.

Sen. McCarthy never went after other people because of their political ideology, but went after those working in sensitive government positions who had communist affiliations--i.e membership in the CPUSA or one of it's identified front groups. He never called for the CPUSA to be outlawed, went after academics or Hollywood. Your film just follows standard progoganda

  • Please don't try to confuse these people with facts. I guarentee that not a one has read a book that has been written on the subject within the last 10 years. The're just a bunch of cool-aid drinkers.

  • McCarthy was a republican trying to demoralise the democrat presidency of truman he would NEVER do it to a republican presidency

  • In addition to those working in government, there were AT LEAST 200-300 more civilians actively engaged in espionage for the U.S.S.R. We KNOW this from the deciphered cables, as well as from the testimony of Communist Party defectors such as Elizabeth Bentley and Whittaker Chambers.

  • They prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that our government was infiltrated by agents working for the Soviet Union, many of whom were in very high positions, such as Alger Hiss in the State Dept., Harry White of the Treasury Dept., and Lachlan Currie, a White House assistant.

  • The poster of this video has clearly avoided actual history and instead has chosen to spout the same liberal revisionist history. You are apparently unaware of the Venona Project, which was a secret project involved in decoding Soviet cables during the Cold War.

  • I thought this was an excellent video...and I happen to like that the narrator's voice isn't as deep and talks fast - it helped me to stay interested and not fall asleep, like I am tempted to in normal documentaries.

  • A little constructive criticism: Your narrator enunciates poorly and talks way too fast. If so many words can't be reduced while keeping all ideas intact, it would be better to extend the length of the doc. instead of crowding fast talk into it.

If a male, your narrator also needs a deeper voice; and in the case of either gender, a neutral inflection -- this man sounds a little, for lack of a better word, 'Valley Girlish'

  • interesting that you have no thoughts to share on the content...you might review your own overfocus on style, over substance. And be enlightened.

  • Thank you so much!! That video saved me at least 2 hours of research for my project!!!!

  • outstanding documentary dude, by the way you gotta see the movie Good Night Good Luck.

  • outsDanding, I sent you a detailed email regarding sources refuting your allegations in this video. Have you checked on the info I sent you and if so, what are your thoughts about maintaining this highly inaccurate video?

  • What is TV doing for us now? Sure TV was a force for good in the 50s, but it has since become a tool of the government and industy to endlessly propagandize us. Today, the internet is the new TV. May it live long and stay free.

  • Islamic fundamentalists run the internet propoganda. They don't have to abide by any laws like the west.

  • hahahahah seems like you're well propagandized. Read some independent history books and documentaries. America is the instigator of war, and the majority aggressor.

  • They're still loosing it though. May not seem that way to you, because all you see is American troops killing innocent civilians trying to live in what used to be a peaceful country. You need to read much more history books.

  • Part of what I see is American troops admitting that they killed innocent civilians. Go listen to the "Winter Soldier" hearings for some real news.

  • Are you saying that there has been a war without civilian deaths within the history of man kind?

  • I'm saying that its wrong for our leaders to wage an aggressive war, followed by long-term occupation precisely because it causes huge numbers of civilian deaths. Its predictable, and the White House, US military and intelligence services knew this before the Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL).

  • It wasn't unpredictable. Saddam has gone. If you spent as much effort studying Iraq 'before' the War, you would realize why they were celebrating in the streets after the removal of Saddam. The war was inevitable for those who gave a shit about the Iraqi's, please watch this short video...

    watch?v=8trt5PC9WCg

Would you prefer us to stop buying Oil from Iraq and buy more from the Saudi's instead? Its possible, but not very fair... Should we stop pumping billions into the Iraqi economy..?

  • Sure some Iraqis were glad Saddam was ousted. How are the deaths of large numbers of civilians not predictable! Ok, we're just going to send in 150,000 armed people to Iraq, bomb them from the sky, and not expect to kill thousands of Iraqis? `War isn't inevitable. We are always lied into war.

Iraq's economy has been destroyed. Instead of hiring iraqis to do reconstruction, they hired outside contractors.

  • "How are the deaths of large numbers of civilians not predictable!"

    They were predicted you idiot.

"Instead of hiring Iraqi's to do reconstruction, they hired outside contractors."

Iraqi's would of spent the money on weapons. A small percentage of Iraqi's still believe the Coalition has come to kill them. Remember, the Secret Police executed anyone caught with a Satellite Dish. They have had no contact with the outside world for over 30 years.

  • The only News they have heard, is the News sent to them from Saddam's regime, "American's are coming to kill you all and take your wimen!", it took quite sometime to with the Hearts and Minds as a result.

Don't forget to watch the video after (5/16)...

    watch?v=8trt5PC9WCg

  • How old are you?

  • it took quite sometime to win* the Hearts and Minds as a result.

  • The "205" allegation has been proven wrong. Witnesses in Wheeling attest to "57". Don't you ever read before making idiotic comments? Horrible video and moronically narrated. There were communists in govt., ever heard of "Venona"? Duh. Do your homework.

  • Frank Desmond, sole journalist at the Wheeling speech, reported the number as 205 on Feb 10, 1950. I fail to see how that number is of extreme importance anyway. Communists (Rosenbergs, Hiss) were acknowledged in the video, at about 2:50. Unfortunately I think you wanted the video to be about something that it was not. By the way, I really appreciate your eloquence with disparaging adjectives - it adds class and credibility to your comment.

  • When someone gives inaccurate information and does so either knowingly that this is inaccurate or is unaware, then a certain degree of disparaging is the order of the day. Have you read "McCarthy & His Enemies"? Have you read witness statements? The enitre video is full of inaccuracies. I have over 15 books on McCarthy (pro and con) so I do know more than a little about the subject matter. If you like, I can email to your YouTube mail account the info.

  • I think that, in what is an apparent defense of McCarthy, there is some irony in your first statement there. That aside, I would appreciate it if you sent a list of the inaccuracies that you mention, as so far the only concrete "flaws" that you have pointed out are "205" and that there were communists in the government. "205" was taken from a credible primary source and the allegation of "57" versus "205" seems ambiguous and, in the context of this video, an extremely minute detail. Thanks.

  • First, let me comment on your video in general. You did a very good job of narrating and producing imagery. However, your info is outdated and was in many cases outdated by the early 1950's. If you have not read "McCarthy & His Enemies" by William Buckley, I highly urge you to buy this book and study it. Most of your issues are answered in that source. Also, Arthur Herman's book gives some relatively fair accounting as well. I'll send you some links to look at. Let me know what you think.

  • thanks

    helped my research

  • Of course long since then the television has become the medium to which media savvy persons subjugate the free thinking of others....TV has long since lost its innocence but, its nice to see a time when honesty prevailed thru that little cathode ray tube. BTW incase you havent noticed I took this well made documentary as an insight into the power of TV, not the rise and fall of yet another self serving politician. Thankyou for this, it was thought provoking.

  • Intelligent, succinct, informative and convincing. Good stuff!!

  • Excellent video and narration. This was well researched and well presented, and very interesting. I have one objection. As a child who lived through the era in McCarthyite Phoenix, Az, I don't believe fear of losing wealth was much of a motivation for the Red Scare of the fifties. Most of the people I knew were poor, but were very afraid for the loss of freedom the Communists represented. In particular, the loss of Freedom of Religon. A minor point in the overall excellence of this video.

  • Excellent video. As for input I'd like to suggest that rather than merely telling your audience your views you should allow those people you are talking about to be heard. You have excellent images, but too much of your own opinion in the narration on areas that have other points of view.

So... next time allow those people to speak for themselves and then use as little narration as possible. That's my two cents. Well made doc though.

  • You mean it did not have much of an effect.

  • i don't think it had enough tie-ins to the 2007 triumph and tragedy theme, but it was very good

  • To add onto that list: 1) you overestimate (or at least overexaggerate the importance of television, though admittedly it was a huge factor, 2) you have the SimCity2000 theme as your background music, 3) you make no mention of Margaret Chase Smith AND you fail to mention that Edward R. Murrow only came out against McCarthy as his influence and popularity were waning

Otherwise, good stuff - you might need to edit it a little better still

  • Thanks for the input, you make three valid points. I'd like to address a couple of them

    2) We did not think that source of the music mattered as long as it was effective. Also used for music were a theme from Goldfinger and Hot Toddy by Ralph Flanagan, which fits the period (1953).
