David Irving is barely a reputable historian although he makes good points in many areas. He's a writer and archive collector, nothing more. Superb interviewer perhaps. =)

Having said that, the Austrian law against holocaust denial is stupid because if it happened (which of course it did) then prove it without the use of jurisdictional prohibitions on dissenting speech and if it didn't happen then denial shouldn't be illegal so how to justify that law?

Hitchens' supprt of Irving is admirable if taken as a bland demonstration of defence of the principle of freedom of expression. But when he tries to defend Irving's views - as though they were respectable as 'history' he joins Irving in the lowest reaches to which an intellect can descend. Hitchens, I suspect, likes Irving's work because he, like Irving, cannot abide the stature and fame of Winston Churchill. And in this Hitchens shows himself to be as small and contemptible as Irving.

If you then use those sources selectively to fit your pre-conceived ideas, and to support an ideology, you are using history as an ideological tool, as well as misrepresenting the past, and I fear that those are not the proper tasks of the historian.

I do not subscribe to that opinion, but just because Irving is not believed by anyone, including the Revisionists, doesn't mean he is telling the truth in his "histories." . It is possible, is it not, that in this case, the consensus opinion is the absolute right one. Who believes the Russians, but I have not wholly discounted their accusation that Irving stole documents from their archives.

There is no revisionist worth his salt who gives any credence to David Irving. Hitchens gives him more credibility than the revisionists. Revisionists call Irving a "novelist".
