  • Apologies to the poster. I missed the credit to "Erbarme dich, mein Gott". I never knew it was taken fron Bach. But it is without question one on the most tearful songs ever written.

  • An aria of sorrowful son whose soul is singing itself...

  • This is quite simply the absolute BEST version of ERBARME DICH in existence! Forrester excells beyond belief here!

  • erbarme mich...... with this voice

  • A Wonderful Voice!

  • my favourite alto!!

  • This voice is haunting me.

  • This is the first voice that has reduced me to tears. And that was when listening to her Kindertotenlieder. But THIS... this was a sob fest.

  • @ofiterpunte me too!

  • It reminds me of Siciliano. Largo by Johann Sebastian Bach.

  • suicidal!

  • What wonderful music and gorgeous rendition here! Always makes me weep!

  • impressionante!!!!

  • absolutely beautiful!

  • wszystkie inne wykonania mają szybsze tempo. To odpowiada mi najbardziej- lepiej przemawia. Fantastyczne

  • Fantasztikus! Gyönyörű!

  • Schön!

  • Zmiłuj się nade mną,

    Mój Boże, przez wzgląd na me łzy;

    Spójrz tutaj,

    Serce i oczy gorzko płaczą.

    Zmiłuj się nade mną,

Mój Boże, przez wzgląd na me łzy.

    (polish version)

  • очень доволен

  • I have never heard this done better!

  • beatiful,

    nuff said

  • Thank you very much for this so unforgettable video...favourite. Regards, Sergio.

  • This reduced me to tears in 2 bars.

  • Does anyone know in which biblical context this is inspired of?

  • @gonrolgonrol The context is I think Judas crying for forgiveness after he betrays Jesus.

  • @hatstalker Hi. I've then heard two explanations- Judas and Peter! I think it is Peter now after some backgroundinfo.

  • That would make more sense.

  • @gonrolgonrol

I'ts Peter after he denied Jesus 3x. Judas never asked for mercy, Judas killed himself, Peter's story we know from then...

  • I want this music to be played as I breathe last on this earth. Erbarme dich, mein Gott!

  • Forrester's phrase are simply impeccable!! Her spinning, long and flawless legato is really to die for - and this, at a much slower tempo than I have ever heard it! She blows me away!!

  • I do not know if this is the best, but I can read music and SHE is G R E A T!!!

    I love this version!

  • Best version ever.

  • ごめんなさいね!

    ただの私の妄想です!

  • Nice. Great aria. But the most beautiful version on YT is Nicholas Spanos's.

  • @tamerlano236 Magdalena Kozena on YT is my favo !

  • If i believe in a creator...that´s J S Bach!

  • Rest in Peace, Maureen, you are singing like an angel, there, in Heaven...

  • Maureen... this is a piece of etenity... we will forever be thankfull to you for all your legacy and mostly for the Bach renderings... You live with us forever... xx

  • This deepest expression of sorrow can be turned back toward the loss of the singer. Forrester is and will be unmatched.

  • Requiescat In Pace

  • Rest in Peace, Maureen...

  • What great singing! This aria with it overwhelming melancholia, thanks to the genius of Bach, really touches the soul. As Maureen's 80th birthday approaches, I am drawn to this piece again and again...

  • The Caruso of contra altos... What an amazing voice...

  • I love her voice

Maureen Forrester actually sang Erbarme Dich, in tears, at Glenn Gould's funeral...

  • I've heard many good contralto voices, but never one so "angelic" sounding

  • its perfect!

  • I love this tempo, and I love Maureen Forrester as I do few other singers; she is simply magnificent beyond words. Who is the conductor here?

  • In my opinion it is a bit too slow, and i miss the feeling the violine should express.

  • Must be Antonio Janigro, an italian cellist, conductor and pedagogue.

  • When you think of those horrors which accompany with mankind on a way of its development you console itself in that in this history there is music by J.S.Bach.

  • What a magnificent voice. I first heard Maureen Forrester as Cornelia in Handel's Cesare recording with Sills and Rudel. Her Bach is just as gorgeous as her Handel. A very special singer indeed.

  • love her voice...in this piece she reminds me so much of schwarzkopf. the colouring of the voice is so much alike...although in a deeper range of course. prefer the straight forward blow the wind southerly though.

  • It's genius Mass indeed but the performance not well and The Violas are not smooth as required for slow and largo movement and also the tenor she must show to us more sympathy must make us feel that the separation and severe pain deeply for me I prefer Andreas Scholl or Jonathan Peter Kenny at least, so please this Bach and I'm not satisfied for anyone who work in some of master piece and didn't estimated to show us something even a little from he's greatness and genius of this composer!

  • I like it, but a little bit tó much vibrato for my taste!!

  • Merci for this movie and note's. I search this note's like 2 mouth.

  • Maureen Forrester's "Erbarme Dich" brings tears to my eyes...

  • Erbarm U, mijn God,

    Om mijner tranen wille!

    Aanschouw hier, hart en ogen

    Weent voor u bitterlijk,

    Erbarm U, mijn God!

    -Dutch-

  • Dat kan ook, beide vertalingen zijn mogelijk.

Het is maar waar je van houdt.

  • I'd say "hart en oog/weent" or "hart en ogen/wenen". Cp. "Auge/weint".

  • Absolutely stunning!! what a voice!!
