@bluesun267 When there is a sharpened contrast it just shows more accurately what the actors look like. If they have a bad complexion or wrinkles, HD is gonna bring that out. Ive seen wrinkles on Shatners and Nimoys faces that I wasn't aware was there. Then again I love seeing the slight green makeup that Nimoy wore to give Spock his Vulcan hue. Remastering and HD is here to stay...for the good and the bad
I have derided every remastered episode so far, as the effects look too video-gamish and generally distract from the story.
However, in this case, they got it right. Pretty good effects that flowed well with the story, instead of overriding it. I think having several non-space outside shots helped in this case.
I am glad they did not ruin one of my favorite TOS episodes, for once.
The remastered effects are pretty bad. One of the common mistakes of CGI is to put in too much visual information - sometimes a blur or a shadow or a silhouette is what you need to reduce visual information. Sadly, those doing the CGI are often disinclined to believe in the principle of less is more. The other major issue is mechanized motion - plotting movement from A-B which is so fluid that it looks artificial or defies the laws of physics.
The original episodes were, IIRC, about 50 minutes long - there were only around 10 minutes of commercials in the late '60s. Modern shows are about 41 minutes long (about 19 minutes of commercials).
So when they air the old episodes on TV, they trim a few scenes. That's what the syndication cuts are, since Kelvington made this video based on what aired on TV.
The HDDVD and BluRay sets have the full episode appropriately remastered.
Excellent! The -104 elements were very well done, although I wish Paramount could have digitized in a more accurate ejection seat and Air Defense Command (NOT TAC!) markings on the Starfighter.
The original was better. Sometimes less is more. This comparison shows just what geniuses worked on The Original Star Trek, to make the effects, even of that era 40 years ago, so realistic.
Aside from the syndication cuts, the new effects actually improved the story. For example, the Enterprise was closer to Earth. Also, the audience saw the Enterprise from the same angle that Christopher saw it from his jet.
Syndications cuts=bad. All the scenes belong there and are interrelated. When people watch TOS today, they must be very confused, because w/o some of the scenes it does not hang together, flow or make as much sense as the full episode. I was excited about this remastered business, until I saw this. Some of the shots are just not Hoyle. I say, leave the original alone. I like to see the strings in Flash Gordon. I like to see the special effects of the time it was made.
See, I'd never say I want to see the shadow of the guy holding up the string the "floating" object is hanging by. That implies more interest in aesthetics than story or drama. I agree that cutting the dialogue at 1:04 and 2:38 is totally unjustifiable and stupid. But I didn't like Star Trek because you could see the overlay rectangles around the shuttlecraft. I liked it coz Kirk was badass, bones was cool, Spock was stubborn, and Scottie was a whiny mechanic.
In This Episode Kirk Tells Capt Christopher There are 12 Ships in The Fleet,The only ones i know are, The Enterprise,Constellation,Defiant,Hood,Potemkin,Lexington,Excalibur,Does anybody know what the other five are
In the "enhanced" version, the Enterprise looks like it is virtually skimming the surface of the sun, which is a joke. The original version makes more sense; you could sling shot around the sun, using its immense gravity from much farther away, like comets do. If a starship really got as close as the "enhanced" version depicts, it wouldn't be able to break free. As usual, CGI succeeds only in making things look fake.
The probably weren't really that close. It's like when you see a low flying jet. it appears to be flying pretty close to the ground when in reality it is pretty far up. So they may have appeared to be skimming the sun when they could have been maybe a mile or two away from it.
sun probably shouldve been brighter, but overall i loved their work for this episode. now all they have to do is re-remaster miri and everyone will be happy...
I really like what CBS Digital has done with the series so far. Earth and the moon looked nice. And the slingshot from the sun was awesome. But in some parts, I have to go with the original. Especially at :27, :56, and 1:11. The Enterprise looked more like a UFO.
I also agree that they should have kept Capt. Christopher's description at 1:15. Booooooo to all the syndication cuts. :(
The original version Enterprise acts like an air ballon in the clouds... REALISM FTW! xD

I know it was 1966.... but the Enterprise slingshotting around the sun.... lol. "She's fighting it!!!" *Enterprise slightly nudges up and down*

Noticed also how they've falsely sharpened and altered the contrast of the whole series so everyone's complexion looks bad.

At 2;16 why the hell did they switch the back color from blue to green? (lol)

Holy cow, I'd forgotten how much of a joke Remastered Trek was.
They wait 40 years to update the 'outdated' original effects, but the new stuff itself looks hokey already - after only 2 years?
Hilarious!

1:06 - 1:30 wtf? "Syndication Cut" ??
They couldn't just do a Battlestar Galactica and reuse the footage at 0:36 or 0:48 ??

4 of the 5 are the Exeter, Yorktown, Intrepid, and Farragut. I don't believe they mentioned or showed any others.

They should have kept the syndictaion cuts where Captain Christopher is describing the Enterprise. It made the episode more coherent.
