It's seems like the best drummers have this certain level of confidence that 99% of drummers don't have. When you watch this level of skill the last thing you have to think about is timing--it's just there without question.
Shut up !!! I hate people wich says ''Steve Gadd ist better than Travis'' :they are two fucking good drummer. Can Steve Gadd plays in Blink 182 as well as Travis ? I don't think so.I really love Steve Gadd but you guys must respect Travis
@JustonGroove I mean i can sorta see what your saying here....but i do have to disagree. I'm pretty sure Gadd would rip blink 182 and i'm pretty sure they would ask him to play for them.
2:06 is a great sounding fill. i also really like 33 seconds. that simple groove is so cool. of course the whole thing is fantastic those are just my favorite parts
HAHA! Now THAT is funny... Steve Gadd needs a tuning lesson? The man who stamped his name on Steely Dan's "Aja"? The man who set the drumtrack for "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover"? This man needs a tuning lesson? hahahaha! I think you better look up Steve Gadd on Wikipedia before you comment further K? LMAO!
Jesus man.. what the hell is that fast little rudiment/ pattern he's playing in the first groove? I'm trying to figure out what the sticking pattern is for it but he's playing it so damn fast.
This is what drumming is all about. This guy just grooves...
Now don't get me wrong, I love me some good Metal Double Bass drumming, But I get off watching stuff like this. It just has more groove and feeling to it.
@BaddPanda the youtube video titled "Buddy Rich on why he doesn't use match grip" is a personification of why they fail and why Gadd and similar drummers win.
@ariesram74 They play different styles, you cannot compare them. Travis plays hard rock, and is good at what he does, while Steve Gadd plays pocket grooves in funk and also plays jazz. Travis barker is a great drummer, and so is steve. it is a matter of appreciating different styles
@ariesram74 Travis Barker is on top of his game when it comes to pop-punk drumming, but in all honestly what is there to pop punk drumming other than playing simple 4/4 really loudly? Where is the groove or originality or expression? Now on the other hand Steve Gadd HAS the groove, and it is the most divine and visceral of grooves combined with the complex cerebral elements of paradiddles and mozambique techniques that flourish in the fills. Passionate and soulful.
Impeccable timing, and it's like he has a perfect metronome embedded in his brain. And, he just loves the drums...you can see it, and feel it. Gadd. Period.
I have so many indispensable influences as a drummer, all of them amazing. But if someone put a gun to my head and said "Pick a favorite", it would be Gadd. I remember where I was the first time I heard him when I was 10 years old. It was the fill out of the intro into the first verse on Al Jarreau's "Roof Garden" (Breakin' Way - 1981). To this day, I've never heard a more musical drum fill.
Yes, as a drummer myself I find it easier sometimes to just keep the sticks as they are. It also provides a "harsher" or more powerful sound when playing the cymbals/high hats as well.
This is such a great example of how it's not just techinque, not that this isn't ultra perfect and tight, but my point is that you can clearly see how relaxed he is and how he is not rushing the groove, he is letting his brain come up with good stuff as he goes along, Every note has it's place, nothing extra, nothing wasted.
Oh my god!! After looking hard I have realised he does those quads from 00:54 and 00:59 with one foot! I know its not impossible but he does them so clean! I could have sworn he was using doubles until i looked. If you don't believe me then look, he only moves one leg and his hi-hat is kept closed! xD
I beleive its from a Zildjian Day clinic in 1984. This is vintage Gadd. Relatively simple, straightforward, deep pocket. Wish more drummers could see this video.

he tunes it pretty flat, it's more acceptable these days to have some overtones in your snare sound, even encouraged.
