You need to lengthen your upper body especially when your leg is at the side. You're doing what a lot of people do - moving your body down so your leg feels higher but you will get higher if you act tall ( if that makes sense)

ok, thank you! I will do that in future and I actually find it easier to have my knee facing out but I tend to put my hip up. I wasn't sure if you put your knees down or to the side in ballet.

I'd try getting your flexibily on the ground first with stretches. Also, yes, you want your knee turned out

it doesnt really stretch me when i put my leg up backwards because i do ballet and i am used to it.
