We still have one of the few remaining drive-ins about a 30-45 minutes drive from where I live, Bengies Drive-In. Saw Despicable Me and Inception there last time I went. Used to have one even closer, The Big M, but it shut down about 7 or 8 years ago. I still remember seeing Finding Nemo and the first Pirates of the Caribbean at that one.
Yeah i live Just out side of Newark, Ohio and we had a drive-in in the north of Newark and one just out side of Heath. both was owned by the same folks the old man died his daughter took over and they shut down in 1986 a year after i was born.i missed out on the fun there was rumors that valley drive-in in the north end would reopen but it never happened now a home depot sits there. the one near heath still stands the mans daughter has it up for sale her house over looks it.
Video had little to do with the demise of the drive-in. The real killer was property tax! The drive-in was built on the outskirts of town and the town soon built out around the drive-in pushing property values up. Owners could no longer pay the huge taxes. In the past few years drive-ins have slowly made a comeback but the digital revolution will kill the few remaining theaters. Owners can't afford $100,000 per digital projector. Also, digital can't fill the huge screens at that distance.
The Beverly Theatre had been destroyed by fire. It's a shame. All this history. Well, I guess nothing can last forever, as much as we sometimes wish they would.
This is the kind of stuff that makes me sick. Classic America is almost extinct, once great factory towns of the U.S. are now slums. People are destroying america, Drive-In Movies, Classic Cars, historic buildings, moral values. I drive through Amsterdam, Ny and i see all of the factories falling apart, churches being changed into apartments. AND everyone has to be a liberal. All of todays ideals are not what America should be. Wish I could of been there to see America when things were good...
Hi. I just wanted you to know that I changed my online name from driveinnut to RQVOutdoorMoovies, which sounded better for posting clips. Check a few out, if you can, especially the one on THE CLERMONT DELUXE. Your 4 part tribute to drive in theaters is very rewatchable, I especially like to see the abandoned sites. Thank you, monster4josh, for your kind thoughts as I began this journey. Your drive in pics are awe inspiring . Congratulations!
To: monster4josh: a FEW MONTHS AGO MY BROTHER GAVE ME AN OLD COMPUTER WITH WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER. I procrastinated but finally I'm ordering an instruction booklet...a paintbrush, if you will. thanks for responding. Seriously, your tribute was great and i'm looking forward to part two.
As a creative artist, i've always been interested is viewing what other like minded souls create. Like painters and sculptures, us video artist have our own take on our subjects, and, I must say, you have really got good reason to be pround of the 3 parter. I'm a bit bummed because for the time being my "paintbrush" has been taken away, and you, monster for josh, have really lifted my spirits. You deserve an Academy Web Award and red carpet. KUDOS! ENCORE! APPLAUSE!
