I was born in 1947 % also lived off Park Road, opposite The Holy Land in 18 South Street. We were shifted out to Netherley in 1969 & it too was the first time that we ever had a bathroom. I can remember ALL that you said about Steble Street Baths & The Wash House attached . I went to St Pauls Infants from 1953 to 1958 then Dingle Vale thereafter. Now retired & living in HEAVEN, high above The Conwy Valley in a tiny Hamlet . Also Thanks for the memories !!
they where mainly used if you lived in rooms as the bahrooms wernt to hot , my mum used to take us, cause it was cleaner lol, still remember it lol. also you could do your washing their,
I lived in Liverpool for 3 years in 2006-09, I used to walk alone around the city, travel end to end with a dayrider in arriva or stagecoach during my final days in liverpool. to see the last glimps before I packed to home INDIA. those last days in the city was tragic, romantic and adventerous. I hope I could come to the city again.
great video DAV, tell me about urself and about the video.
I was born in the Dingle 1956 and lived off Park Road, opposite the 'Holy Land' streets. We moved out to Speke in 1968 and it was the first time we had ever had a bathroom! Our local public baths were Steble Street at the top end of Park Road with a wash house attached. Out the baths and round to the little hatch where you could buy a piece of hot buttered toast. The bread was like a doorstop it was so thick. Lovely! Thanks for the memories. LOL!
Thanks for the memories! I grew up in Aber st until the age of 13 ish. 55 now but it only seems like yesterday that we were playing footy in the street! Tom. (or Tommy as I was refered to at the time)
Some of these images very much remind me of my own neighbourhood in Manchester circa late 1960's - early 1970's. Almost thirty years later and there were still vast districts of waste ground from where bomb damaged houses and other structures had been cleared. Great vid. Five plus stars.
Liverpool and Manchester. Two jewels in the Northern Crown we used to know as Lancashire!
Pity about some of these kids who don't remember the days before the media and the Tories told us we should hate each other and we were all mates and think everything is based on football.
btw one of the best nights i had ever was yrs & yrs ago when myself & two friends were trying to find a party in granby (l'pool 8) we got lost & went in to a club there instead...it was quite small, very crowded with great music...we may well have been the only white girls in there & i have no idea what it was called but everyone was really nice to us though think they guessed we had kind of stumbled in to it!!
sorry about even mentioning that you had put 'the blacks' as i should have realised it was just a bit of a slip of the tongue!!
i hope you enjoy your visit when you do come...i lived away from the city for several yrs so now its like i'm a tourist again in my own hometown which is a little strange esp for my friends & family who think i'm a bit daft as i always want to go down by the albert dock/pier head way just to 'breathe all the city in' as i say LOL
last comment to crackerass01 re the slave trade...i promise!!
a couple of yrs ago liverpool commemorated the abolition of slavery in 1807. up until then there had been a permanent exhibition of the save trade @ the maritime museum in the albert dock. in 2007 this was expanded to form the new International Slavery Museum also based @ the albert dock.
Hello again davlin2 - is the shot at 0.17 of Everton Road coming from the direction of Grant Gardens? I've only just learned that the Gardens used to be known as the Necropolis, or graveyard. There's a spooky picture of it as it used to be on the inacityliving site! Thanks again for a great video. Kind regards.
Well there are still bodies there now, over 80,000 people still under the ground, some are 3 ,6, 12 feet down! and the ground is starting to colapse in with the coffins colapsing!
Hello davlin2, I was born in 1950 and lived in Queens Rd, went to Whitefield Rd infants / juniors, then Margaret St. school, had many a great time at the baths, fond memories of several shops on Whitefield rd, Arthur Broughs sweet shop, Jones the fish shop,Walthmews greengrocer,s , arthur's grocers, Maisy's newsagents, also Brians? barbers, there was a pub called The Whitefield ( this was still standing but derelict the last time I was there)so many good memories, great video,by the way any more?
Great stuff. I too went to Steers Street in 1945-7, swam in Margaret Street Baths and went to a gala there in about 1945 and saw the local butcher, George Stober, pushed in! He had a shop in Everton Road. I also went to Plumpton Street Nursery School. Played in Grant Gardens when it still had a fountain, saw 'Bambi' at the Hippodrome, went to the The Cosy Cinema and lived in Fitzclarence Street. Can anyone tell me where to find pictures of that street? Really enjoyed the video, thanks.
Many thanks for sharing it. It really has brought back loads of memories.
I used to live in Hughes street till '68, and went to Steers street infants, Whitefield rd Juniors and Prince Rupert Secondry. Why did they ever pull Margerate street Baths down ?
Nabz go and live in manchester then ya manc. We here are talking about our city not about thiers. So if you want to talk about football go and talk to gary neville or his brother.
cloggerhoo come on lad lets be honest manchester has left us all here in liverpool far behind you no it lad here in liverpool we pride our selves on our fairness even tho it breaks my heart i have got to say manchester united is way ahead of us (lfc) benitez is nowhere near as good as alex fergueson manager wise and if im honest he NEVER will be and look at the supporters the mancs bring to anfeild it is unbeileavable thousands upon thousands lfc....... we are a joke
MANCHESTER UNITED the greatest team in the world by far how i wish liverpool or everton could be better i live on robards road in anfeild and it breaks my heart to see what the teams in liverpool have been doin compaired to MANCHESTER UNITED
This vidio brought back many memories i lived in St Albans off Whitefield road and went to Steers Street school learn to swim at Margarets street baths the area is like i remembered
What a wonderful video, showed Margerate street baths, i use to live in Everton around that time, would of been 4, what memories, thank you for sharing this video.
Memories! And everything looks so long ago (which of course, it was!) Husband & I have been in Scotland since 1978 & hardly been back to the 'pool since so everything in our memories hasn't changed much from this film! We weren't well off and had no 'mod-cons' but we had heart then.
Wow, that takes me back I could well have been one of the kids playing in that film. Great times, it may look grim, but the reality is that it was totally ace.I certainly wish I was back and I'd gladly forgo the luxuries of today, for the warmth and community of yesteryear.
I'm a bit confused about the date though because the dome of Paddys Wigwam is clearly visible and I don't remember it being completed until about a year later.
The graffity in teh video is quite interesting, To my untrained eye it reads Negroe and white ... something, a reminder perhaps to less tolerant phobic days in Brirain
Even by the mid sixties, judging by this film, Liverpool was still recovering from the German bombing twenty years after WWII had ended. Not much post war reconstruction was done there. Hald Wilson's White technology speech of the time, it seems quite hollow when you watch this home movie. It looks more like a third World country than a modern industrial one.
yeah it'd probably have helped if we had been a little nearer to london...somehow i don't think the govt would have taken 20 yrs+ to provide funds to rebuild there..i remember it like this in the early 70's my nan had a pub on the dock rd we used to call them the bombdies...
It looks like the graffiti reads "keep Britain white!" I can't quite catch what's underneath. Maybe a West Indian community was starting to take shape in the area, and some of the locals bristled at the sight of it. From what I hear, Liverpool is not one of the most tolerant cities when it comes to minorities, even TODAY!
I've not heard it in the Sun, but other more respectable rags.
I'd like to think it's not true. Most Scousers that I've met in London have been cool. What I've heard about Liverpool is that at least up to fairly recently, a black face was rarely seen in the city centre, and when seen was not generally made to feel welcome.I read this on an Internet site.
That's a load of shit. There is a huge black community here aswell as many other cultures. There aren't many national papers that like Liverpool anyway - probably something to do with the Toxteth riots in 1981 so please don't believe everything you read.
As I said, I would like to believe that Liverpool is no more racist than any other town or city. I like Scousers, and I think Liverpool has got a bad press in the past.
Are the blacks mainly concentrated in certain areas, like Toxteth?
However, "Everton are white" chants in the recent past, Joey Barton's brother, Liverpool's prominent part in the slave trade, anti-black riots in the city in the twenties and thirties, amongst other things, give hint of an unwelcoming place for minorities.
liverpool played a prominent part in the slave trade as you say b/c liverpool was THE main port serving the atlantic at the time of the slave trade. for the UK. i consider liverpool a multi cultural city & always have done...yes as in most cities most ethnic & minority groups settlled in certain parts of the city but he way you say 'the blacks'??? make me think you have a problem with black ppl yourself...
Yeah, you're right. My "...the blacks" phrase does sound a bit dodgy. I'm not sure what I was thinking about when I wrote it. I'm a mixed-race black guy, though, and don't have a problem with blacks.
I'm not anti-Liverpool. Just a bit disappointed to hear of a few too many negative things to do with race, regarding a city of people that I like!
I intend to visit Liverpool one day myself. That's the best way to learn about a place.
goes without saying that the city is not proud of its links with the slave trade but it is something we have not tried to deny or shy away from either. it is something we acknowledge....after all...
