There is plenty of evidence that they existed, if they didn't then who wrote the majority of the New Testament. It wasn't the Jewish religious leaders, because the Bible was highly critical of them. At the end of the day you could say ''how do you know Caesar existed?''

A lot of Roman documents from the time suggest there is evidence of a distinctive sect of Judaism springing up and causing debate within the Jewish world.

Personally, I believe if it was a conspiracy then why is there no evidence for this...the Romans wouldn't have made it up because they worshipped Caesar.
