The actual progamme was a fix. If you watched carefully: Box 5 had £5,000 in it, Box 10 had £10,000 in it etc same with boxes 15 and 20!

He would have either probably phoned his mum, much like he did when Laura won £250'000, or leave, which happened after Alice won £250'000.
