They were leaving with the people they had arrested when other protesters surrounded them and tried to stop them by sitting with their arms locked together. They did a "mic check" and said they would let the police leave if they let the people they arrested go. The police gave many warnings before spraying the protesters.
@omgwtfbbq6666 I think originally against tuition increases. Then the university said that protesters could not set up tents on campus, and the police were there to remove the tents. They announced the day before that they were removing the tents, so the protesters were there to protest against that. The people who were pepper sprayed weren't protesting... just trying to block the police from leaving with people they had arrested.
