We usually get them with Snatch Hooks. The tails are not the issue. It is the spikes at the base of the tail. Check out some of my Sting Ray videos and you can see the part.

The reel has 116 pounds of drag. We were fishing it on strike which is 85 pounds or so.

You should keep strong wire cutters on your boat. Next time, cut the barb off the hook, or the eye, and the hook will slide out easier. True, a hook in a fishes lip should not cause fatal harm, but it will very likely cause an infection until it rusts out in a few weeks or a few months.

Predator fish are jabbed all the time by their food -dorsal spines, bones, pieces of crab shell, and stingray barbs. I know it seems weird, but a leaving a hook usually isn't that big a deal. In the days when killing sharks was normal, we dissected a big hammerhead and found 20 stingray barbs in its throat ! He got stung but didn't quit eating rays. Like me getting burned and not quitting jalapenos I guess. Think ray barbs are worse than hooks.
