I love this kind of honest garage rock music from the 60s. It´s raw and it´s honest. No samples and overdubs. It doesn´t matter that the organ guy hit the wrong chord in the intro. or maybe it´s a finesse. No one knows. My hobby is to rediscover all those great bands from the 60s that didn´t "broke through". Listen f.e. to THE ZETTLERS and their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah". Awesome! And with a bloody driving beat.
This is such a good song; a Psychedelic Nugget and wall-of sound too. I am surprised to see that almost 50,000 visited here. But my cynicism about other people's taste in music was reaffirmed when only 135 thumbs up (but then I guess that number often means less than zero) but then I am confused that no thumbs down. Surely this song must be hated by more "music lovers" to affirm how good it is.
I love this song so much!!!... In reply to the guy below, I am working on an LP soon and we are going to attempt to do a cover version of this, I know it's going to be a challenge, but this song has been so special to me since I was 16 years old, I want to do a version to pay homage to The Dovers... I think I can do a faithful cover, without it being mocked... we'll see I'm recording the cover version in a couple of weeks... fingers crossed.
The Dovers are possibly one of my favourite bands.
Try as some might, but this could never be duplicated with anywhere near the perfection it has. The songwriting, the vocals, the wall of sound, the keyboard, the guitar riff, and the actual recording itself...it transcends its pop simplicity into something else all together.
Any ideas on how we can get this re-released or jump to more than 22,000 views? Well Ktoop could change the view number to 22 million (I'll help - I've already viewed it 21,000 times) and change the dovers to beatles and well come on this is a great idea and everyone is just standing around laughing at me.
I'll simply repeat what someone else said of The Dovers' recoording: 'What Am I Gonna Do?' ... I want to live inside this song.
The lead singer has a great voice, then you've got the wall of sound thing going on, you've got those superb, rich harmonies and the lovely tune, all with that genius and strange high-pitched keyboard riff over the top.
In short, this is a perfect song and I'll love it 'till I die
Panda Bear is a genius...you know he has his hands all over walkabout. Even if its an "Atlas Sound" song, Panda most likely did all the sampling and badassery. Listen to the CD person pitch. Walkabout sounds like it could be on the Album.
Funny how he sounds exactly the same as "Animal Collective". I can't even tell the difference between Panda Bear and Animal Collective, both "groups" I find not to be music at all.
@andyhercules Noah taught Bradford how to sample, but he didn't actually get the dovers sample. Atlas sound was touring with Animal Collective, and Bradford wanted to get this sample...the rest is history
Atlas sound sampled the song. he did not recreate it. Two different songs. This song is amazing, as is walkabout. and if anyone is seriously disappointed that Brad Cox sampled a song. shut up. just enjoy the music.
Once again, you're completly besides the point. Atlas Sound did not rip the 60s of, but sampled a catchy tune. Apart from that, where are the similarities between this folkrock song and Atlas Sounds Hip Hop beats?! When Detroit Techno started, they sampled old funk tunes. Again, were they the "new uncool generation"?! Invention comes doesnt start in a vaccum, but by working on older material and tranforming it into something else. You just seem to want to appear cool" Wee, you're not.

....similar, but Atlas Sound really adds some life to it. Definately can hear the influence. Darn. And here I thought Bradford Cox wrote one of the best songs ever. Seemed like he was on the verge after It Never Stops.
it was noah lennox (panda bear) who introduced him to loop digging. it's actually a really cool technique, one that requires a keen ear. how do you think panda made person pitch? glorious after glorious hypnotic samples that were compiled for the project. yes the loop was taken, but something completely new and beautiful was created.
i knew atlas was too good to be an original!

If someone doesn't get this song .. you should be condemned to listening to Bach for the rest of your years.
If Prison + Dovers = Life
and Bach + Life = Prison
Then Moulty is still a man.
11xzxzxz 1 year ago
@11xzxzxz This song is amazing, but don't dis Bach. Bach is absolutely beautiful.
If you're going to dis any musician, dis something like Tool or System Of A Down.

@thisisnotlouisrez walkabout has so much nostalgic value for me, and if those feelings can be brought about by sampling something else, then so be it

You're right in some ways.
It's true that any music, even going back a long time, was many times derived/borrowed from others. It's real hard to have an original sound.
The problem and what's wrong is~ when artists take someone's music and don't give any credit, e.g. Led Zeppelin.
Hope Atlas and the others that sample give those they took from their proper due.
