I'm 16 and I love them :( Sometimes I feel sad because I can't find any one who likes the same bands that I like. For example: The Beatles, TM&TP, Elvis Presley (it's not a band actually), etc...
I thought that the Mamas and The Papas did such a great job with breathing into this song (and a special nod to Mama Cass for her embrace of this Beatles song) their own special beauty and craftsmanship, making it, in my view, probably the best rendition of it - even better than the Beatles did. That's saying a lot, no doubt. :)
Thought the Mamas and the Papas did a hell of a job covering this Beatles song that Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas made a hit with. Shows how good Mamas and the Papas actually were.
@MasterMusician091 : It also shows how good this SONG actually was. They knew that. (They wouldn't have recorded it if three of the four members disliked it). But in fact, it was Cass's idea. She had a crush on John Lennon the size of Mt. Rushmore, and it was as much a tribute to him as anything else.
David Bowie heard this and 'sampled' the piano 'riff' for Station to Station - it's clear when you hear it. I reckon it was because he was miffed that John Phillips got commissionned to do the MWFTE soundtrack, and then looked thru the Mamas and Papas catalogue, and was intrigued that they'd covered a track written by his friend John Lennon. Perhaps the 'sample' was partly getting his own back! :)
Credited to both Lennon and McCartney, but definetly Lennon's style of writing and sense of rhythm. It's a nice version, but not as good as the original. George's 12 string guitar solo is superb, especially with that reggae beat.
This is a Beatles Song that they slowed down, so it is properly identified as a Lennon-McCartney song. The Beatle's version is too aggressive for my taste; I like this one better.
A very fine combination of song (Lennon), production (Phillips/Adler) with overdubs as a choral sound, and that great vocal blend with Cass' remarkable vocal gift. No wonder folks get emotional. The real THANG!
I'm just to damned emotional - God, I loved this group more than life. It was the magic age. I also loved a hundred other groups. No wonder my head is messed up today. I pity those who were unlucky enough to NOT be immersed in the experience of the 60s/70s. BUT! We can pass on the love. Share and try, TRY to explain to them. Young ones: Keep your minds open, take a deep breath, look around, think for yourself, listen and enjoy. You only "Run The Rock Once" - do it for you.
I love Cass and Denny's vocals on this one......a great cover of John Lennon's song......Cass was one great singer, love the pictures, thanks for sharing....
One thing I really like about this song is that it gives you an equal appreciation of Denny Doherty and Cass Eliot's vocal work -- you've got Denny's pop tenor doing "I'm not gonna make it, I'm not that kind of man, doo-do-doo", and then Cass answering him (at around 1:00) with that slow, seductive "Doncha know I can't sleep at ni-i-i-i-ight..."
In the live version of the song from the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, Cass basically says that she considered this cover of the song to be a personal valentine from her to John Lennon, whom she had a crush on -- and she also says that Lennon did in fact make a point of introducing himself to Cass and thanking her for the excellent cover version.
despite having listened to them hundreds of thousands of times in my lifetime, their amazing vocals never ever cease to blow me out of my chair and send shivers up and down my body. incredible band, one of the greatest of all time, hands down.
@champs472 yes there is, her name is Sia, I believe she is the best female voice of today. Not to say anything negative about mama Cass, I would never do that.
Wow, hadn't heard this in an age. Knew that I wanted to hear it as soon as I saw it. Kinda campy at first, and especially now in the middle, but what a dynamic finish. Breathtaking!
Oh yeah! This was one of the best back then. It's a Lennon/McCartney for heavens sakes and Cass Elliots fabulous ability to sing---A no brainer. Excellent. Just grabs at you.
Do Do do do doo The bit starting at 2:02 is super.

Love the piano on this song. Papa John had a single back in (I think) 1968 called "Mississippi" with someone doing some pretty fancy piano work!

Mama Cass can even make a throw-away Beatles song sound great

The Mamas & the Papas recorded some of the best music ever.
Mama Cass had an amazing voice and the group was made for the 1960's.
Great music ended after the 1980's.
I wish I could go back in time.
