  • ¡ Eso si es cantar ¡ ..................

  • Love the piano on this song. Papa John had a single back in (I think) 1968 called "Mississippi" with someone doing some pretty fancy piano work!

  • Mama Cass can even make a throw-away Beatles song sound great

  • The Mamas & the Papas recorded some of the best music ever.

Mama Cass had an amazing voice and the group was made for the 1960's.

Great music ended after the 1980's.

I wish I could go back in time.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • @GeorgeVreelandHill ...Amen!

  • The ONLY case of a Beatles cover that beats the original. Their jugband roots really show here.

  • @idiotgingrich Joe Cocker's With a Little Help From my Friends is the other exception

  • @bethanyfaye Try Jeff Healey's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." That version makes me cry. He's blind too.

  • I thought that the Mamas and The Papas did such a great job with breathing into this song (and a special nod to Mama Cass for her embrace of this Beatles song) their own special beauty and craftsmanship, making it, in my view, probably the best rendition of it - even better than the Beatles did. That's saying a lot, no doubt. :)

  • Mama Cass Nothing compares to your voice R.I.P <3

  • Thought the Mamas and the Papas did a hell of a job covering this Beatles song that Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas made a hit with. Shows how good Mamas and the Papas actually were.

  • @MasterMusician091 : It also shows how good this SONG actually was. They knew that. (They wouldn't have recorded it if three of the four members disliked it). But in fact, it was Cass's idea. She had a crush on John Lennon the size of Mt. Rushmore, and it was as much a tribute to him as anything else.

  • David Bowie heard this and 'sampled' the piano 'riff' for Station to Station - it's clear when you hear it. I reckon it was because he was miffed that John Phillips got commissionned to do the MWFTE soundtrack, and then looked thru the Mamas and Papas catalogue, and was intrigued that they'd covered a track written by his friend John Lennon. Perhaps the 'sample' was partly getting his own back! :)

  • Credited to both Lennon and McCartney, but definetly Lennon's style of writing and sense of rhythm. It's a nice version, but not as good as the original. George's 12 string guitar solo is superb, especially with that reggae beat.

  • That VOICE! I agree: BEYOND AWESOME!! This song is especially great at featuring Mama Cass' beautiful voice!

  • God bless you Cass, you were such a beautiful talented human being , miss you xxx

  • I love cass' voice! so beautiful!!!!!!!

  • Superb stuff I grew up with, I cried when Mama Cass died.

  • i don't like girl singers because their voices annoy me, but cass' voice is an exception

  • Great cover song... I thought the Mamas and the Papas did a wonderful job of interpreting this song their unique way.

  • GOD! GOD! I can't believe I found it!

  • This is a Beatles Song that they slowed down, so it is properly identified as a Lennon-McCartney song. The Beatle's version is too aggressive for my taste; I like this one better.

  • May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man. The author is a big fan of this track.

  • John Lennon? wow

  • My mom played M&P, Simon & Garfunkel, and all those groups from the sixties for me when I was little. Thank you so much mom!!!

  • Mama Cass rocked that band....Love and miss you soooo much!!!

  • I'm sure Lennon woulda been proud of this one ... Mama Cass rocks

  • Did Cass OWN this bad boy or WHAT?

  • A very fine combination of song (Lennon), production (Phillips/Adler) with overdubs as a choral sound, and that great vocal blend with Cass' remarkable vocal gift. No wonder folks get emotional. The real THANG!

  • It's pretty hard to perfect anything by John Lennon, but the Mamas and Papas did it with this,

  • I'm just to damned emotional - God, I loved this group more than life. It was the magic age. I also loved a hundred other groups. No wonder my head is messed up today. I pity those who were unlucky enough to NOT be immersed in the experience of the 60s/70s. BUT! We can pass on the love. Share and try, TRY to explain to them. Young ones: Keep your minds open, take a deep breath, look around, think for yourself, listen and enjoy. You only "Run The Rock Once" - do it for you.

  • Luv Mama Cass !

  • @champs4727

    you hit the button :D

  • Brilliant. We'll forget the origin of the song. Yes, this band did that good!

  • LE DIERON EN LA TORRE A ESTA SUPER ROLA ,CON TODO RESPETO

  • Nice honky tonk sound.

  • She does a Streisand tribute with her 2nd Hand Rose phrasing on "I call YAW name."

  • Yep I didn't believe it at first and I am a huge Bealtes fan John Lennon did write this song it just sounds so different

  • #256 greatest songs of the 60s

  • Cass sounds just like an angel. One of my MnP favorites :)

  • This is the only cover of a Beatle's song that I like.

    Well done, Mama Cass. :)

  • I love Cass and Denny's vocals on this one......a great cover of John Lennon's song......Cass was one great singer, love the pictures, thanks for sharing....

  • I'm not 100% sure the John Lennon wrote this........Is that accurate?

  • @57Naterboy Absolutely!

  • @catman916 @57Naterboy Abso-floggin-lutely!

  • @catman916: Verified. Lennon wrote this, in fact, before there ever *was* a Beatles. His finest song, IMO. Brilliant.

  • @57Naterboy Yep. Well, Lennon and McCartney.

  • @57Naterboy John Lennon wrote it and Ringo sung it on their Past Masters album.

  • @PhillyDippy5 Ringo?! What are you talking about? It's all Lennon, baby!

  • @Talisman09 Yep, i don't know what i was thinking about when i said that

  • @57Naterboy techinically it is credited to LENNON/MCCARTNEY

  • @57Naterboy like so many of their songs it's actually credited to both Lennon and McCartney

  • @57Naterboy Who do you think wrote it?

  • @57Naterboy Quite Accurate John wrote this in 1957. You can google the info.

  • @57Naterboy .... probably john and paul

  • @57Naterboy

Yep, this was a John song. I believe this was one of his oldest songs as well. Wasn't he quite a brilliant one?

  • One thing I really like about this song is that it gives you an equal appreciation of Denny Doherty and Cass Eliot's vocal work -- you've got Denny's pop tenor doing "I'm not gonna make it, I'm not that kind of man, doo-do-doo", and then Cass answering him (at around 1:00) with that slow, seductive "Doncha know I can't sleep at ni-i-i-i-ight..."

  • In the live version of the song from the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, Cass basically says that she considered this cover of the song to be a personal valentine from her to John Lennon, whom she had a crush on -- and she also says that Lennon did in fact make a point of introducing himself to Cass and thanking her for the excellent cover version.

  • despite having listened to them hundreds of thousands of times in my lifetime, their amazing vocals never ever cease to blow me out of my chair and send shivers up and down my body. incredible band, one of the greatest of all time, hands down.

  • Nice interpretation, but Lennon's vocal has teeth.

  • she was GODDESS,i loved her with all my heart,so ugly she passed so soon, and lennon too, musicians,i call your name

  • I just love this song...the best Mamas and Papas song there is and Mama Cass is the reason why...there'll never be another one like her.

  • My favorite Mamas and Papas tune

  • Very cool interpretation :D

  • there is not a female singer alive today with a voice that compares to mama cass'. BEYOND AWESOME!!!

  • @champs472 maybe adele?

  • @champs472 yes there is, her name is Sia, I believe she is the best female voice of today. Not to say anything negative about mama Cass, I would never do that.

  • the immortal mama cass - few things finer than the mamasand the papas

  • Wow, hadn't heard this in an age. Knew that I wanted to hear it as soon as I saw it. Kinda campy at first, and especially now in the middle, but what a dynamic finish. Breathtaking!

  • lindaaaa!!!! Mama Cass a melhor do grupo!!!

  • amazzziiinnnggg.

  • This has got to be one of their best songs. Their harmonies are perfect. Takes me back to the time.

  • i like the beatles one better but this is still great

  • ONE OF MY FAVORITES BY MAMAS AND PAPAS

  • Oh yeah! This was one of the best back then. It's a Lennon/McCartney for heavens sakes and Cass Elliots fabulous ability to sing---A no brainer. Excellent. Just grabs at you.

Do Do do do doo The bit starting at 2:02 is super.

  • Vocals! I was lucky to have this kind of music back when I was 14.
