Flying 20k feet over enemy territory whilst taking flak in a tin can like that takes big brass ones. No disrespect to the aircraft but I'm sure anyone who has flown in to combat in one of those things would agree. But then again at the time no one knew any better. Everyone was flying around in one type of tin can or another when compared to the arsenal available today.
As a kid it always felt like the WWII generation would be around forever. The recent loss of my grandfather (a WWII vet) forced the realization of our impermanence, and it's a heartbreaking thought. Great to see this pilot getting a chance to be back in the sky in such a sweet bird.
He belongs to a unique generation. We owe it all to them. I can totally understand this man. Just stepping into one of these machines gets you turned back in time even if you were never there.
I had the privilege to do some volunteer work on the 909 and the All American with the Collins Foundation. I was 15 at the time, and even I get a little teary eyed when I see that 17, and 24 in the air.
What a great interview! That man got me all choked-up. All I ever wanted to be, as a kid, was a crew member on a B-17. I took a flight on that same aircraft, and I made a childhood fantasy come true. Don't tell EAA, but I would have paid double what I did to experience that.
My God that is a beautiful plane. I get chills going down my spine just looking at that video. I can only imagine what was going on in that man's mind. Well, God bless the B-17 and the men who flew them. God bless all our veterans. It is very moving to see that gentleman get so emotional like that. God bless him.
i have soo much respect for the gentle man talking about his experiances in ww2thanks to him and men that fought in that war for this countrys freedom.
This made me cry. My grandfather who passed away in 2003 was a career air force pilot, veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, and flew as a civilian well past his military retirement. Pilots are a special breed, and there was nothing that meant more to him in life than flying.
To hear this sweet man tear up is like listening to my grandfather speak about flying all over again and it breaks my heart.
My son and I just took a tour of this very plane in Arlington, Texas. It was like living a history that I was too young to experience. An awesome aircraft and even more praise to the men who flew those B-17's.
beautiful trip into the past...so many gave their all for our freedom...we must never forget them...for sure we have to move on...but we must always give thanks to the memories of those who suffered so much to set us free.
Excellent document of the nations greatest generation. The soldiers of that era are treasures that we are losing too quickly, without enough attention paid. We need more vids like that to archive what makes the USA th greatest country to live in! Bravo, great job!
What a humble guy! He must be great to fly with..
